    video #2: • pt2 React to Mastodon ...
In this video I react to Jaguar God by Mastodon.
Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, a classic prog-rock guitar teacher on TH-cam. I grew up on 70s progressive music but abandoned the genre by the 90s because it was too 'hard-edged' for me. My all-originals prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i went into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar).
2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery of 30 years of great music which I'd paid no attention to- until now!
I also will react to 70s and 80s prog that i overlooked, like gentle giant, camel, etc.

Crazy how 1 solo at the END of the album can tie in the whole album story line. This one never fails to bring a few tears to the eye. Out of sheer beauty. Jaguar God really touches the soul🖤

Dean, the song is the final song from their 2017 concept album Emporer of Sand. They won a grammy for the opening track "Sultan's Curse".
The album is about cancer, as 3 of the members of Mastodon had family members who were diagnosed prior to making the album. The drummer's grandmother and the rhythm guitarist's mother passed away, and the bassist's wife survived.
The story is The Emporer gives the protagonist cancer and the songs tell his journey for a cure.
He is near death at the start of Jaguar God. The acoustic part is about how the lead guitarist Brent Hinds feels about himself, but it fits the story. The 2nd part is where the protagonist meets the Mayan Jaguar God. He praises him and the Jaguar God sends him to the Emporer's throne room. If the protagonist touches the Throne Of Maladies, he is cured. But he dies just before he can touch it, leading to the outro solo and the Emporer's laugh

Minor correction: the Jaguar God is actually Aztec, not Mayan, but other than that it was a nice overall explanation.

I remember the first time I heard Mastodon. It was around midnight one Saturday/Sunday night watching Headbangers Ball, circa 2006 and I was still just branching out my metal taste, from Metallica and Pantera. I wasn’t really feeling the Nu Metal scene as much as everyone else. Slipknot just wasn’t doing it for me tbh. That’s when the music video for “The Wolf is Loose” came on. And it was weird. Colonial America, horse-carriging down a mountain while something was chasing him. I then heard the bridge/solo of that song and immediately fell in love. I didn’t know what it was about them that really struck me. Maybe it was the Primal/barbaric mood their music set back then. I have YET to be disappointed. I was never into Dream Theater - style Prog Metal. Something about out of place keyboard samples and random sounds/corny vocals just doesn’t cut it for me either. If there IS such a thing as “Prog” Metal.. than it is Mastodon. To me they do it the right way. A way THATS only been done in the past by bands such as Rush. And Brann may be the modern day Neil Pert. Though, Brann would probably disagree.

Jaguar God is a good song and people rightfully lose their minds for the last "proggy" section of the song. But, Mastodon's catalogue is so much better than this! You've already listened to Crack the Skye in its entirety, but I'd urge you to visit their earlier albums at some point. Leviathan and Blood Mountain are genre-defining albums and IMO get to the quintessential Mastodon sound.
