Have you ever watched Ryder Caroll's original bullet journal video? There's no frills in it. All you need is a pen and a notebook and preferably a ruler.

True bullet journals are definitely the easiest. Love the style. I just like some stickers. The decorations can get overwhelming with the other styles.

100% agree if you haven’t watched Ryder Caroll (bullet journal creator) then you don’t really know bullet journaling. The creative community has taken BUJO to the next level which is great but the basic system is really just a notebook and a pen.

I feel this video. I got my start with paper planning as a kid when I'd draw my own monthly calendar on a sheet of notebook paper to write down homework pages and test dates, and I kept up with planning by picking up basic cheap weekly planners once I hit college to keep track of school assignments and social events in the days before smart phones.
Once I had kids, I moved up to a few different "Mom/family" planners available at Amazon or B&N, using them as functional tools without bothering to decorate them. I think this was the first time I was exposed to vertical grid weekly layouts, and I found that I liked them more than the usual horizontal lined boxes for weekly pages because I like having separate blocks for timed events, exercise/food, and tasks.
A few friends recommended Passion Planners to me around 2016, so I ordered a small sized one from their Kickstarter for the now discontinued reusable cover version with paperback insert. I liked it enough to get another undated small and a dated Medium on sale and also stocked up on Passion Planners during the $3.14 Pi Day sale last year after using PP (also on sale). I think I grabbed 2 daily and 3 undated weekly ones, because at that price, why not? I learned that I'm not busy enough or into writing about my day ad nauseum to make a daily planner worthwhile, but the weekly planners will eventually get used. I'll probably alternate years with the Nomatic planner, which has a similar layout as the PP weekly but is less cluttered and has some quality of life features I prefer (hard cover, slightly narrower A5 size, three! bookmark ribbons, two elastic bands, offset binding so there is a space at the top edge to stow your pen).
I also did a year of bullet journaling in 2017 before deciding that it was a waste of time for me to essentially draw out a weekly spread every Sunday in my blank dot grid notebook when there were hundreds of planners for under $12 that were printed with the same layout I preferred. I tried the OG rapid logging style of bullet journaling that Ryder Carroll demonstrated in his how to video, but eh... I am a visual weekly vertical layout gal, and I also have to be able to write down events that might be months in the future. That is just easier with a classic calendar layout and standard planner for me.
I did carry over the notation symbols from my bujo experiment and learned that an all-in-one book bound planner for events AND notes wasn't ideal because there were a lot of things I wrote in the bujo that I wanted to keep for reference in the future that were now stuck in a book with irrelevant grocery lists and long past appointments. I'd have to copy over all of the things I wanted to keep. 😢
I spent a year and a half messing around with Happy Planners in 2020-2022, which is when I fell slightly down the rabbit hole of stickers, washi tape, and plan with me videos. 😂 I actually enjoyed the ability to customize a HP with the exact types of filler pages I liked, but the cost, time spent trying to make it look pretty, and annoying sizes (mini was too small, standard was too big), eventually killed HP for me as a main planner. I liked the standard size (close to notebook paper size, but not as tall) a lot for planning my 2 kids' virtual school schedules during the 2 pandemic years of school at home since I didn't have to lug the heavy planner anywhere. That system felt more like a scrapbook/memory journaling than a functional system for someone who liked to carry their planner on the go.
At least the HP sticker collection can be used with PP and Nomatic, and I use the rings and paper punch to make slim ring bound books out of printed crochet and cross stitch patterns without the need for a binder. Staples has the ring bound ARC system that uses half letter sheet refills that is a lot more practical. I have played around a bit with making my own half letter Frankenplanner using it and printable sheets from Etsy. 😅
This year, I'm back to using one of the Nomatic A5 planners for events, appointments, and food logging, but I have a separate Miquelrius spiral graph notebook for tracking exercise (I like to see progress over multiple years and programs) and a B6 Stalogy as a commonplace book for all of the non-fitness knowledge I want to keep beyond one year.
I'm an artist, but I don't want to spend my creative time on making a mundane appointment book and food log that will be tossed at the end of the year pretty. I'd rather save it for a dedicated sketchbook or even the commonplace book. These days, my Nomatic is lucky it gets reusable colored monthly Post It tabs and a 4 color Frixion pen.

Yes, this is where new journalers are led astray I think. Companies market dot grid journals as "bullet journals" so it is easy to miss that bullet journaling is a METHOD and the dot grid journals are a TOOL. Without the method, they are just blank notebooks.

  • @DL-idk

I have always had a problem with overspending on stationeries. By the time I discovered the planner community, I already had dozens of unused notebooks laying around 😂 The worst part was none of them fitted my need for a planner. I’ve tried bullet journaling a few times (in 3 different notebooks) just to find out that I couldn’t handle the stress of having to draw out the layout all the time. None of them lasted for very long.
Now I’m settled with Hobonichi. Those extra notebooks I will use them for journaling, memory keeping, exploring art and random doodling. For a longtime I was beating myself up for not using up notebooks that I already had. But lastly when I went through my archive, I found out that I’ve actually already finished roughly a dozen of notebooks (or almost finished. Some of them still have a few pages left. Some of them are too old or kinda time sensitive so I can’t really go back and fill them out). So in reality I’m not as bad as I thought. It was a huge relief.

haha! I've tried to squeeze myself into one planner for many years and I am realizing finally that I always end up buying others by April. So I am going just get a few different ones for different reasons that I know I will need anyway. It's not a waste at all I think, it's a hobby, passion, and stress relief for so many of us.

When I first started bullet journaling years ago I loved doing all the artistic spreads and making the notebook look pretty. After three years of that, I got tired of drawing all my calendars and doing all those spreads, collections, etc. I just wanted practical. I tried the Hobonichi for a while, and now I primarily use Sterling Ink planners. (I'm addicted to the Tomoe River paper) Getting over my need to make my planners look like those I saw on TH-cam took a while, but now I do what works best for me. Everybody has different needs.

PassionPlanner is one of my favorites--it's the planner that got me back into journaling full time after several years away. I had been looking for something to organize my life a bit in 2022 and decided to buy the undated Passion Planner in 2021 because I wasn't sure when they were coming out with the 2022 version of the dated ones. I've been using them since then for both planning and memory keeping, but this year I've been slightly falling out of love with it, and while I do plan, I no longer want to memory keep in the planner because I keep running out of space for my writing or my pictures. So for 2025 I've gotten the Hobonichi Cousin Avec because of the daily pages and the space. And I also do not like planner chunk so that's another win for me to have the year split into 2 because those planners do get heavy and thick after a while. lol.

For 2025 work planner I'm switching from Hobonichi Weeks horizontal to the Kokuyo Jibun Techo lite vertical. I'm already exited for the change in the paper.

Great video, very clear. Your sound is good as is your video quality and editing. I journal a lot but I don't know that much for the passion planner hobonichi system. I thought your art in the Scribbles was cute, but I get that not everyone is crafty or likes to do that. As others have said the Ryder Caroll original bullet journal system is very minimalistic, not a sticker or cuties drawing in site. I think Pintrest and other socal media took that freedom and ran with it. When you search for bullet journaling you find more vibe than substance.

I really enjoyed your video! I think you did a great job of breaking down different types of planners to help people decide what they need. I’ve used planners for 30 years. Started with the Franklin in undergrad and used that until the BuJo method came out. That did a great job for my work/home needs. When I had a lifestyle change, I was in planner flux, and I needed something with more structure…but not ALL structure. I got the Hobonichi Cousin this year, and I like the structure and layout (I’m a vertical person, I cannot visually ‘see’ a week in the horizontal at all) but I didn’t like every page being dated, and having very little “free pages” for creativity (I’m not an artist, but I like to make things fun, the way you did in your Passion Planner…but I don’t want to have to be able to make every single spread and have it look good, cause it wont, 😂) I found that the color changes, quotes and a few other things bugged me about the Hobonichi. I needed something that I could carry around with me every day in my purse, and I needed a desk planner that was more detailed, but also was less visually distracting and had a little less enforced structure (and no quotes! I hate pre-printed quotes!!! I’ll add my own!) So, I went with the Sterling Ink this year (my first order just came in the mail today and the unopened box is next to me beckoning me!) because I really liked the layout, the choice of all free pages (numbered) after the months/weeks, etc. No quotes, no color changes or distracting visuals. It’s very similar to the Hobonichi Techo and offered in a bunch of sizes, so I got A6 during that release, and I’ll be getting an A5 for my desk with next weeks release. It is costly, and the videos can be so appealing to buy so many accessories (I’m looking at you, full set of Mildliners cause everyone loved them…when I should have spent that money on 7 or 8 Tombow dual brush pens instead…) so I would recommend looking at videos of different planners, thinking about what you need vs what you want. Maybe get a cheap notebook and write out what you’d like it to look like (as a draft) feel the size/weight in your hand. Where is it going? My A6 needs a case to survive daily life in my purse. My A5 really doesn’t, it stays mostly at home, and I have a case already that will work for it. I never thought I’d like Tomoe River Paper, but for a planner, I do. I have some “just journals” from Archer & Olive and Notebook Therapy that are beautiful and I can use for writing when I want to do that (plus a recipe book, and a health book.) I have loved paper and pens since I was a little kid. I love the feel of different papers and how different pens write. Try to go to a store like an art store (or a planner store if you’re lucky enough to have one) where you can sample the different papers and pens (Jetpens also has sample kits of different types of paper and pens that they sell.) If it doesn’t feel right, look right, and fit your needs right…you aren’t going to use it. It’s a journey, and your needs and wants change over time. Pass things down, or swap at a meetup (look for local clubs and libraries) when you’ve decided you don’t like 20 of your washi tapes. Enjoy, but be prudent. As Julia Child said, “Everything in moderation…including moderation.” So have fun where you can, and be more restrained when you can. It should be fun, not intimidating, pressure filled or like a chore. You don’t have to have the newest, coolest thing everyone is going on and on about…see if it’s something you’d like vs “shiny, me, now!” (Any fellow ADHD will understand that!) Keep up with the videos, you have a really nice voice and had great things to say!

@@Rosyrespark Same here! I think it’s hard for one planner to fit every need, and if you have a few in different layouts/styles/sizes, or just grid, I’ve found that I feel more comfortable just jotting something down that won’t “ruin” a layout, or doesn’t fit in a prescribed box. Also, more comfortable having that weekly timed schedule that I can put all of the appointments/to dos/family events, etc etc, and not lose the random post-it I jotted it down on and then lose 🤦🏽‍♀️ Hope you continue to make videos and that you find some Planner Peace ☮️
