I'm 64 years old. When I started as a programmer in the mid 1980's no one was talking about autism or Asperger's at least as far as I knew. Back then at least the places I worked I'm pretty sure almost all programmers were on spectrum or very close. Me watching this video and these autistic engineers I'm thinking they sound and look like most engineers I worked with. I'd kind of like to see an NT engineer interviewed.
There were different types of engineer however. Those at IBM and huge business projects were NT types. I worked in startups creating consumer products. Seems like autistic people were just better at thinking out of the box and understanding what types of products NT people like.

Companies out there need to invest into these amazing people. They could be the key to solving the worlds toughest challenges a untapped market. But with that said dont take advantage of them and pay them a solid wage and living conditions for their services.
My son has Autism and the fact that there are some companies out there who want to give the Autistic community a chance. It speaks so much for the people who are sadly overlooked for people who just have egos.

Some days I wake up and all I can think about is ASD. I see so many people impacted by ASD. I wonder what will happen when children with ASD are no longer eligible for services. How do we ensure these kids have the same opportunities as everyone else? We need more companies to think like this.

What I'm not liking about all the info available, is that there is no info on what education level is expected? A lot of ASD ppl do not make it thru college or into a Bachelors degree. Can ASD people who have some education/experience in programming (Associates Degree) apply too? Or is it just post baccalaureate?

Question: Is the alternative hiring process being used by the Autism Hiring Program helping people within the autism community outside of Computer Science majors? Because I would love to learn more about the program, and how I can get my foot in the door as a Business Administration major.
I had an interview at Microsoft a few months ago, but it didn't use the alternative hiring process mentioned in this video which would have helped a lot. I was also interested in attending local hiring events, but they were limited to Computer Science majors. Hopefully, diversity and inclusion of all majors is a priority because we are all interested in opportunities at Microsoft. I would love the opportunity to lead diversity and inclusion programs one day.

Doubt it, very much so - companies don't care for people with autism, based on anything I observed during my own job interviews.

Reflecting the makeup of our workforce, most of these have been engineering positions, but we've have people through the program in a number disciplines, including finance, legal and content publishing. And it has been a great success so far!

    • @PatrickKellyLoneCoder
      @PatrickKellyLoneCoder 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@IHeartNoise my interactions with their more public facing (FOSS) projects, as well as some of their project managers on Twitter, have shown, at least to me, that their staff is remarkably unaware of what autism is and how interaction styles differ. It's been very high friction interactions.
Find a project that respect your surface value "matter of fact" and either too short or ranty proposals, who says "go for it" and just simply checks your Pull Requests for quality. That's far more catering to autism than "social points" systems like Microsoft seems to be doing here.

This is just a meaningless marketing material. You need to answer what the autistic people who’s looking for a job really want to know, because we are not disabled, we just need a environment that suits us. You are hiring us, not doing a charity to us! This is still a mutual selection like any other hiring processing you do with a NT person. You gotta answer the key questions during a hiring process. For example:
    1. What is the hiring process like? Do people still need to practice LeetCode thingy? Is it going to be solving a problem? Or what? Why is it different and better?
    2. Are there ND women in the group? I didn’t see they were represented in the video. I’m also on the spectrum but I’m very different than the people in the video, which is very common for female ND group. I find most Autism hiring campaigns very stereotype, they always choose some typical asperger boys who likes board games and talk super fast with monotones, and I am a bit worried that they will misrepresent a lot of people on the spectrum. And if people like me send my CV, will we be screened out because we “don’t look autistic”?
    3. What exactly did you change in the office to make the autistic employees bring out more potentials? For example, what did you change in the management style? What changes did you make to lessen the frustrations in autistic people at work? We have some problems at work and communication. It doesn’t mean that if you provide a quite dark room it will solve everything. You still need to do something to help us bring our our real potential. Just hiring NDs is not the end. How do you help them to reach their full potential is even more important. Why do I want to join you? Still, like I said, this is hiring, it’s mutual selection, not a charity. You need to sell us yourself too.

I don't understand how this is supposed to work well, when you have this program but don't address concerns actual autistic people have about the program, even if that's just answering a few questions. If it's not the people with autism you're listening to, who is deciding how the program works? Why, the more I look into this, the more ulterior motives I see?

Can’t find a job for my son doesn’t get callbacks has only gone to two interviews. No callbacks here where we live there are no autistic centers. He was diagnosed at 16 graduated at 18 have no services for him very hard. I’m scared for him that he will not find employment. Many of these people that are homeless. A lot of them have mental issues because I’m non-medication no one to, start them off and get them going with medication. Maybe they could get productive and not being homeless drinking doing drugs it’s a very big problem I’m scared for him.

I appreciate you looking at our positive qualities, but no. No you don't. And frankly, while I don't believe in the slightest you intended to do so, you've quite frankly insulted a lot of people by doing that. Talking only about the positive aspects to the point you put on an air of legitimate _jealousy_ while talking about a disability that affects our lives in numerous very real and negative ways is... absurd. You don't wish you were "autistic", you wish you were Rain Man, and here's the thing - we fucking hate Rain Man. It's an utterly unrealistic portrayal of autism that creates an absurd, idealized, impossible-to-reach expectation, which both society and we ourselves look down upon anyone who fails to live up to it.

Just because some aspects of my autism make me especially well-suited for certain tasks (meticulousness, detail-orientation, perfectionism, etc) doesn't mean it isn't a disability. Further, it's not just about having people with skills - it's also having that perspective. Diversity isn't just about numbers, it's about perspective and side-stepping the privilege that many people bring without even knowing it to the table.
