  • The 2019 Rav4 Hybrid might be the best possible road trip vehicle for space, efficiency, comfort, practicality, and value. It provides a ton of stuff and creature comforts..although at a price. We drove from DFW to Galveston Island and surrounding areas for a short trip with the RAV4 XSE Hybrid and it really helped me get a good feel for it. At the end of my week with the 2019 Rav4, I had accumulated almost 1,000 miles and went through a lot with it. My wife liked it, and enjoyed much of what it had to offer.

    The new Rav4 is pretty impressive even though it gets expensive. It was great during our trip! Also...on a short trip through town after I got home...it got 54mpg 😁.

    Tip for MPG in hot weather, if you can crack open the roof with the AC on , it will drive the hot air out the roof and cool you down faster.

    OMG Nolan. I can’t imagine taking a SUPER HOT Vacation. I would think the water is not cold to be refreshing, but very warm. You’re a lot more rugged then I am that’s for sure. If there was no humidity then I would be right there. The Sun really does a number on me. You had a great Vehicle for this trip with the exception of the fuel gauge. 4 hours to Galveston from Dallas not bad. My trip to the Hampton Beach area is 1.5 hours. And I am sure it’s MOBBED.

    I like the dark color, it’s different. I’d like to see a pearl white one with the black trim in person. Gas mileage is pretty impressive for an SUV and the power output seems more then sufficient. The interior also seems much nicer then the plasticity one of the previous gen. The one thing that erks me is the overall exterior styling. Much better then the old one, but something about it just doesn’t jive...it’s definitely the rear end from the rear door back. Maybe the rear pillar and glass juts forward too much from the rear lights. IDK. But a great in depth review. Love the vacation spot. Lots beautiful. Hope you had a good time!

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really like that pearl while with the black roof. I see a lot of camrys with that combo and it looks good. I’m with you on the rear styling too...it doesn’t seem to fit the rest of it but oh well lol.

    Purchased the 2019 Rav 4 XLE
    I am averaging about 40.3 on the interstate and around town and I don’t drive like a hybrid Prius owner if you know what I mean.
    Only time I have dropped below 40 mpg average was when I was driving 85 to 87mph on cruise control with 5 people and gear for about 2 hrs. On the interstate in Idaho.
    This baby is amazing. When my wife drives it she can average 42 mpg.

    You mentioned you wished it had another trip meter- it does (there are two). On the right side of the gage package right above the "C" on the fuel gage, you can push that black knob and cycle thru the odometer, Trip A, and Trip B. Have had my Blizzard Pearl XSE for about 3 weeks now and love it. Thanks for a very well done video. EDIT: Just saw where you cycled thru Trip B, so you obviously know about the dual trip meters. I guess you wanted a Trip C meter, which we do not have, lol. 😊

    I like the color. I also like that the Rav4 does look more rugged then the previous gen. However, I can't help but think it may be a bit over done. As an owner of the previous gen limited model, I find myself appreciating the sleekness and sharpness of the front end and lines that my car offers. Things that I feel have been lost in this redesign. I would still put this on my shopping list, but I think I would get it in the Trail model, as I feel it is would be a lot more fitting to this design.

    Couple things I don’t like with our xse. In the dark it is really hard to see the unlock buttons to open the passenger door. Really dim lights in the cabin and back hatch. The s-mode on the right of the console panel, makes it so you don’t have to turn the vents off to the back or passenger. It will do it for you if you don’t have stuff piles on the seats. In Canada we don’t get the full moon roof just a little sun roof.

    That color is beautiful. How's the handling and driving dynamics of the XSE vs the Limited Hybrid? I love the look of the XSE but really want the bird eye view camera. Are the steering weighted the same? Does the Limited feel floaty?

      I was in the same dilemma, I love tech and I wanted ventilated seats, birds eye view and memory seats. So I test drove limited and it felt really floaty on the highway (it was a windy day) and was not sure why would a top of the line RAV4 would do that. Then test drove the XSE and it felt absolutely well planted with great control and the steering weight felt more heavier than limited. Couple days later test drove XSE and Limited again at another dealership, Limited ride was very normal and the driver side mirror we shaking at low speeds, XSE ride was stiffer but not uncomfortable, took couple sharp turns and corners at high speed and XSE held up so well that I decided to buy XSE in blueprint. I would have loved to have the Limited's birds eye view but the Ride quality, handling and driving dynamics of XSE were far superior than Limited. If you are looking for fun and exciting ride with cool interior and exterior go for XSE and if you want all the tech and a regular comfortable ride Limited is the way to go.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It did great in the sand. I didn’t even change modes for the AWD. Some spots were deep and it had a little slippage but pulled me through without issue.
      It’s an all the time thing. Some vehicles have suspensions that can change and adapt with buttons but this is constant.

      Not sure why this car gets bad rap for being loud and unrefined. I've had this hybrid xse for two months now and it's extremely smooth and quiet. Only noise is Highway you have some wind noise (but it's not bad) and when you step on the pedal the engine does make moderate noise. When driving at any cruising speed or under light to moderate acceleration the vehicle is extremely quiet. Good soundproofing and fantastic suspension (although a little softer then I prefer, great for daily driving & long drives).

      Most vehicles nowadays say transmission fluid is “lifetime” and doesn’t need to be changed but I would still change it at 50k or so. The Hybrid system is proven and has an 8 or 10 year warranty so it should be low cost and low maintenance 👍

According to my math since I live in SoCal and I will be driving a lot of stop and go, idling a hybrid is the way to go and my math tells me it cost me $600 to operate my sonata every month with gas and car payment. Hi, please answer my question if you can because i cannot find the answer anywhere. I am about to take a long road trip and since I will be driving for 13 hours not braking a lot, how will the car get charged? I know when you brake the car charges, but does it also charge while it is in ECO mode? Also when the battery is low, what should I do to charge it, just sit in my driveway with my foot on the brake? I just got the 2020 XSE yesterday and just a little confused about the whole hybrid battery. Thanks!

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Tonie! Good question. When driving long distances like that without using the brakes much, the gas engine will actually partially charge the battery. The gas engine’s main responsibility is to power the car but it will sometimes convert its power to battery power. When you’re at highway speeds most of the power will be the gas engine and the battery will only help out when it can, and if it can’t, that’s no problem because the gas engine will keep you going (it just won’t be as efficient, but still not bad).
      When you are going down a hill or coasting, the battery will be recapturing some of the cars energy, the same way the brakes do. The brakes only charge the battery by capturing kinetic energy...so if you’re sitting still in your driveway, the brakes won’t help.
      You actually don’t have to do anything different than drive normally - the vehicle will take care of itself and maintain a good balance of gas engine and battery power. If the battery is low, that’s ok, it just won’t be able to help as much and your MPGs will drop a little.
      Eco mode helps to dull the throttle and use of the gas engine, so it tells the vehicle to use and or conserve as much as possible. On the highway it won’t make very much of a difference, primarily in city driving or stop and go traffic.
      The biggest thing is try not to worry much about the status of the battery. It’s kind of fun to watch and pay attention to but it the vehicle will do the best it can without any additional work from you. To get the most out of it, Try to take advantage of slowing down slowly so you capture the most amount of energy possible, avoid hard accelerations because it will use more gas and take more battery power to propel the vehicle. Even using the “eco” button on the A/C controls helps to limit the energy used by the air conditioning.
      I was super random with that but hope I made sense lol.
      You’ve got yourself a nice ride, I hope you enjoy it! I’d be happy to answer any other questions 👍

When measured at gas station the difference was 4%, equal to all car computers. • @turboclaybird
      @turboclaybird 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert Råman EV mode is cool, but only lasts so long. For example, I can remain in EV mode for only about a mile in my Prius (assuming the battery initially had a full charge) before energy is depleted and the gas engine has to activate. In my experience, this is generally the case for all conventional hybrids.

    • @robertraman6307
      @robertraman6307 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phoggbank yes , I dont suggest that you can drive the car in ev mode but my point was to drive it in eco-mode and be very gentle with the acceleration and let the Electric motors give what can before the combustion engine kicking in. Yes some situations would trigger the drivers behind you and then you need to “wake up” the combustion engine but then be sure to release the throttle back to ev and let the car loose some speed, accelerate, loose some speed. This kind of eco-driving might be boring but you can drive the pretty Heavy RAV4 surprisingly cheap. Take a look at 1001cars just to see that test-drive and the mileage!:)

    Your xse headlights have a NHTSA rating of "poor". I also have XSE and road lighting at night is quite poor. I added led fog lights and at least up close now and turning I can see well at night.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that’s a shame about the lights. I was thinking their distance wasn’t very good and they aim low. After driving other vehicles it’s definitely apparent. Good idea with the LED Fogs!

      Good point. I made sure the it still had space and most driving the green bag wasn’t down there. The other side had nothing or a smal suitcase that allows the underwear vent to curve away. Nice thing is they have a raked pattern to prevent true blockage and curve away. Thanks for pointing it out

    Seen a bunch of the Rav4 and the hybrid gets excellent gas mileage but it's too bulky in the back. The cargo volume is smaller than the previous generation (that's sad). It's a good vehicle but it's a bulky commuter vehicle versus a city dweller. $40K for a bulky Soccer Mom Compact SUV? I'm going Lexus for their new UX...less than $40K, parks everywhere, same gas mileage, luxury comfort, yeah not the best cargo volume but that's why roof cross bars are optional. Sorry, not sold with the new Rav4 Hybrid it sounds great...for every busy Mom. For the record, I'll be 30 soon.

    Great video! I love my XSE Hybrid but I’m also having the same issue of the gas tank not filling up all the way. Even with the fuel reserve, I only get about 9-10 gallons at fill up when the gauge shows near empty on a 14.5 gallon tank. Many owners are also having the same problem as you can see in in these forum posts:
    www.rav4world.com/threads/difficulty-with-getting-fuel-tank-full.298909/

      I also had the same issue with the gas only filling up to 3/4 of a tank. So far Toyota has replaced the entire "fuel tank assembly and fuel gasket" so I guess you can decide if thats major or not. But other than the fuel issue, I really do love the car.

    • @bobbeaulac1605
      @bobbeaulac1605 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We also had Fuel Sending Unit replaced and it has not helped either. Like others have said, other than gas fill up issue, car has been great so far. Links supplied really define issue and what some of us have had done on ours with no real solution yet. Hopefully Toyota is really looking at this issue as it looks like it is getting worse as more people are able to get the Hybrid.

      @@travelinben1966 well, gas price will not be that expensive. I owned a Camry and a 2019 Acura Rdx. It's just 400 dollars a year difference between both of my vehicles.

    • @James-rd9mo
      @James-rd9mo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I strongly considered the RDX but price difference started at $4000k CAD more for RDX. Once I calculated extra cost for premium fuel, higher insurance and repair costs I realized I'd spend $25,000 CAD more over 10 years to own the RDX. Not worth it in my books. 1500lbs towing capacity on RDX didn't help either 😔
