Remains the only WM I ever attended. My mom spent her teens in Michigan and we used the trip as both an excuse to see WM and visit some of her relatives. Only I and my dad and older brother attended the event. Our sister and mom couldn't have cared less about wrestling. The 80s marked a great time for attending big events in my family. I, my dad and brother also saw Super Bowl XX (I was the dork in Pats colors, they went in Bears jerseys), Game 2 of the '88 NBA Finals (my dad loved the Lakers), a bunch of California Bowls in college football (we lived near the city hosting it) and Mike Tyson Vs Bonecrusher Smith in Vegas (again, I was a dork and cheered for Smith). Haven't gone to anything big since then.
Speaking as a young fan back during WMIII and as much of a Hulk Hogan fan as I was I was also a fan of WWF Wrestling and I can tell you that the biggest thing on that card to me was not Hogan vs. the Giant. If anything Savage and the Dragon were the stand out most memorable match on that card - for me. Not disparaging Honky's recollections or his opinion, but just speaking for myself as a WWF Wrestling fan back then. I liked Hogan a lot - what kid didn't back then? - But you could see he was a bit of a one or two trick pony and just couldn't deliver the type of move for move, high-flying action of a Savage and Steamboat.
He is right. The Hogan/Andre match in of itself is not a great match. But it's the hype, the angle and the characters and all of that. The opinions that differ from that just isn't reality. Hogan made a crap load of money, and I doubt he was thinking about what came before.
It would've been petty bullshit if Hogan really sabotaged Steamboat because of his match with Savage. He and Andre drew the crowd not Steamboat and Savage. It just happened that Steamboat and Savage had one of the greatest matches in wresting history and seeing what the response of the event was just proved that. Everyone has to get their name out somehow. There's nothing wrong with that. Critics and wresters alike absolutely loved the match. Hogan has does alot of things that were questionable, but for him to be threatened by Steamboat is ridiculous because he was still going to be the one who drew the money and WM 3 proved that.
@@richie9308 Yeah, there is no doubt what the actual best match at WM 3 was.... How much does that matter in context of 1987? Honestly, one could argue that the Savage/Steamboat match set the table for Savage to turn face and set up the Mega Powers angle. The match surely boosted Savage to another level. It does suck that Ricky's run went the way it did. I would have loved to see him as WWF Champion. Guys like Steamboat and Bret Hart are two of my favorites, but while I agree that Hulk probably used his power, he wasn't in the wrong all the time. Honky being IC champ was Hulk's idea. People throw crap on it now, but Honky got massive heat at the time. Which is the goal.
It’s not a great match? Why because they don’t fake wrassle as good as Savage and Steamboat? Who cares about that beside internet marks? Steamboat got derailed because he demanded time off to be with his family right as he comes off a huge program with Savage and the IC title. That’s on him
@@Plainview-tu7xn True. While Honky was not as technically gifted as Steamboat, he was entertaining as hell. Just look at when Ultimate Warrior took the belt from him, the crowd went crazy and was looking forward to the day he was going to lose the belt. I just wish Steamboat had a longer run with the IC title because him loosing it randomly just seemed weird. If he had asked for a few weeks off, i'm sure they couldve done an injury angle where George Steele would turn on him or if Greg Valentine attacked him and the question would be if he would relinquished the belt. He would still hold the belt and feud with whoever and then drop it to Honky months later and then would go on a do a potential rematch with Savage at WM 4 in the semi finals the wwf championship tournament. Either way though, the Bonnie factor would still play a role in why his run in wwf and eventually his run with the NWA belt in 89 wouldn't be what it should've been.
Savage v. Steamboat was one of the greatest matches ever! Better than Hogan and Andre. :) And most fans I think realized that and I can totally see Hogan getting jealous and resentful of that with Steamboat and Savage! They were better technical wrestlers as it was!
BOTTOM LINE: Macho Man Randy Savage eventually DID replace Hogan as WWF World Champion! This confirms Ricky Steamboat was 100% correct to presume Hogan felt threatened by both Randy Savage and Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. Ricky Steamboat was involved in what is considered the greatest match in history with Ric Flair. And this match between Steamboat and Randy Savage was also excellent. Hogan was not friends with Ricky Steamboat, because Hogan knew Steamboat would tell Vince McMahon to get lost. The Honkytonk Man is 100% correct that MANY of the matches from Wrestlemania 3 were better than Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant. Both Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant were poor "wrestlers" compared to excellent technical wrestlers such as Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Randy Savage, and others. But, the fans of that generation bought tickets and bought pay-per-views to watch those LARGE wrestlers such as Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, and The Ultimate Warrior.
He was probably right for most fans but I can say I got my mom to take me to closed circuit because all I cared about was the Savage-Steamboat match. Both still in my top 5 favorites all time. So in that I wouldn't doubt if Hogan hated on him. They did steal the show. And that's a fact.
if that was the case hogan wouldn't have worked with savage. maybe hogan didn't like steamboat, but it had nothing to do with that match because he worked with macho man for years
That match is one of the most overrated matches ever. It was a good entertaining match, but it wasn't even the best match RIcky or Macho Man ever had. Pick any of those matches Ricky had with Ric Flair and tell me it was better. The retirement match Macho Man had with Warrior was better than that match
You have to give Macho Man enormous props for that Warrior "retirement" match; that was probably the only match where Ultimate Warrior actually looked like he could wrestle. I was a diehard UW fan but he couldn't wrestle; he was just huge and incredibly powerful but in that retirement match, Savage made Jim Hellwig look amazing.
The only standing ovation Hogan cared about that night was his own for his cheque when it arrived in the table and Andre the same. Anybody really think Andre cared less about Savage and Steamboat's match!? Only way Andre would have cared is if he found out they got paid more than he did! Hogan may have felt a tiny little piece of annoyance that some fans were talking about the Savage match a little bit too much compared to him & Andre's However, lets get real here, The only way it would have made him feel threatened in any way at all is if Vince was talking about it more than about Andre vs Him & thinking of making them his next main event instead. Hence, affecting Hogan's paychecks!
Hogan vs Andre is what Vince wanted the fans to focus on that night. That doesn't mean the fans weren't invested in other stars on the card. Though Hogan/Andre had a lot of drama & suspense to it, Steamboat vs Savage was hands down the most exciting & best match of the event
Nothing like that Hogan Andre match. Andre a heel, Bobby Heenen in his corner greatest talker ever. Hogan in his prime. Hogan wasn't sure Andre would drop the match.
I agree that everyone came to the event to see Hogan versus Andre, but a significant number of those people left thinking Savage versus Steamboat was the best match on the card.
Steamboat/savage was an amazing match. Nobody cares. WM 3 still is hogan Andre. Hogan worried about losing his spot to steamboat is ridiculous. HTM was being extremely respectful towards steamboat. Nobody remembers or even cares that steamboat was IC champ.
The Honkster is right. Everybody paid to see Hogan and Andre. We're looking at it from today's point of view mind. If people say otherwise. Hindsight and all that.
Wrestlers and many fans have this misconception that the main event is the reason anyone goes to the shows. If that’s the case why is it in the days when everyone near enough took signs, you’d see HBK, Undertaker,DX and Stone Cold fans. Young girls were there to see HBK, guys were there for Stone Cold when neither of them were in the main event.
Gotta disagree with Htm. As a guy who in the arena at WMIII , Hogan and Andre were the main event , but Savage Steamboat was the absolute number 1 highlight by FAR
I can certainly understand why Steamboat would say that about Hogan's influence.. he was getting paid more than Andre and all the wwf roster at the time and for many years. if Hogan said something or did something, only Andre the Giant could over ride it, but at that time in 87', Andre was too hurt and on his way out to call anything so definitely at that time it was all Hogan; so he had Vincent's ear on pretty much everything... but I also think it had to be an on the spot thing and Wayne Ferris was in the right place at the right time even if Hogan suggested it which makes total sense because there wasn't anyone else on the spot Vince could have put in that position. and at times it does help to be in the right place at the right time. which is where Honky was.
Hes spot on. Love Savage-Steamboat. It was an absolute classic and a bonus. But no one stole anything from Andre and Hulk Put it this way. Does anyone think that a hypothetical re-match of Savage vs. Steamboat would've had 10 million people watching on Saturday Night's Main Event???
I agree that they came to see Andrea and Hogan, but Ricky and Macho stole the show. I remember the slam; however, I remember the Savage and Steamboat match more clearly. There has been many testimonies about Hogan sabotaging people who took the spotlight off of him.
After the fact exactly the Steamboat match with Savage was one of the best matches ever nevermind just in Mania III. They also could actually wrestle where Hogan could not and he just has his typical predictable moves
He's right and I never thought of it like that ... macho and steamboat had the best match that night but people came to see hulk n the giant that night..... FACTS
Hardly anyone knew Steamboat v Macho Man had the greatest match all time until the internet. Hardly anyone was talking about randy and ricky before during or soon after WM3. That being said to this day Hogan v Giant gets mentioned far more often than Ricky v Randy .
We can't have the title dormant for 2 weeks? Wtf is that? In those days champions had 30 days to defend their titles. I believe Hogan did have something to do with it.
Hogan was jealous of Steamboat because back then the guy who held the I.C. Title and can draw would be slotted down the road to take the world title and Vince was looking for a possible replacement for Hogan.
I hate when interviewers just let the wrestlers talk and go all over the place like this. Hogan/Andre drew much of that crowd but it had an incredibly strong undercard. Steamboat/Savage didn't outshine Hogan/Andre going in but definitely did by the end of the night. That was the match everyone was still talking about weeks after the event. That is what Dragon thinks got him on Hogan's bad side. Macho got a pass because Hogan understood Randy was a monster heel and they always drew money. I need all these interviewers to fanboy less and do better jobs.
That match lifted savage up. Maybe it was an opportunity for both but ricky didnt have the charimsa to take it to the next level. Savage had slmost everything.
Steamboat was one of the best workers of all time

I've seen one with honky from years ago, I think he had some alcohol issues at the time
@@chriskennedy2298 prob around 2001-2002. I mean thats when the "worlds collide" one got released with new jack and the sheik. So this would be around that time where these vids got made, and maybe got big on youtube ebaums etc.. around 2005 if i remember correctly
@@mikehunt9884 that's not really early I think shawn michaels did one not long after screwjob
@@chriskennedy2298 not the point, i already said there were earlier ones, even bruiser brody did one..
Literally nobody online saw that boring ass shawn michael shoot.
I love honky he's cool he's cocky he's bad
I see what you did there. You’re cool, cocky, and bad (good) yourself lol
He’s the honky tonk man😊
Yeah, but here he is flustered
It's been scientifically proven..
1. He picks a mean guitar
2. He wears blue suede shoes
3. You oughta hear him sing
*_"The Snakeskin Blues"_*
They didn’t come too see “Harley and JYD” 😂
I always loved the Honky Tonk Man. He was such a great character and he had so many great moments in wrestling. He's done some great shoot interviews as well. I like when he was talking about wrestlers becoming religious. Thats pretty funny. I love Honky's hair now. That great part looks really awesome! I love this guy.
@@richie9308
Yeah, there is no doubt what the actual best match at WM 3 was....
That’s on him
I noticed that HTM had chosen his words very carefully. I don't think he wanted to hurt Hogan's feelings.
I loved the Honky Tonk Man character. He was a great heel.
Savage v. Steamboat was one of the greatest matches ever! Better than Hogan and Andre. :) And most fans I think realized that and I can totally see Hogan getting jealous and resentful of that with Steamboat and Savage! They were better technical wrestlers as it was!
He was born on a pool table at jack's bar in Memphis Tennessee.
Joe's bar! Momma gave birth to me on a pool table in Joe's bar Memphis Tennessee! 🎉🤠! What are the top couple lines in wrestling history
And that's a fact.
if that was the case hogan wouldn't have worked with savage. maybe hogan didn't like steamboat, but it had nothing to do with that match because he worked with macho man for years
They didn’t steal anything. Hogan slamming Andre is the most iconic moment in WWE history bar none. Every knows it
Stole the show? Yeah- because everybody left after the Savage/Steamboat match. Y'know- to beat the traffic... 🙄
They didn’t steal nothing. Shut up kid.
I was born on a pool table in Nashville Tennessee😮
Still don't care.
This was at the silverdome in Pontiac Michigan not far from Detroit. Of course they wanted to see Alice Cooper a Detroit Legend
@@steveshubert Warrior had great matches with Rude, Slaughter, and with Hogan the year before.
I was at Wrestlemania III and Honky Tonk Man was right, i was there to see Hogan and Andre and thousands of other fans.
Randy & Steamboat was the Match of the Night… But Everyone Came to See Hogan & Andre
"If i give you this belt will you run with it? Vince i don't want a day off"
I laugh at that part lol. Honky the IC belt Goat
Andre-Hogan was huge. But to say people didnt want to see Steamboat-Macho and Piper's retirement is ridiculous.
Greatest Intercontinental Champion!!!
The Honkster is right. Everybody paid to see Hogan and Andre. We're looking at it from today's point of view mind. If people say otherwise. Hindsight and all that.
Honky tonk was one of the best to do it.I came to see you wrestle Honky
Wrestlers and many fans have this misconception that the main event is the reason anyone goes to the shows. If that’s the case why is it in the days when everyone near enough took signs, you’d see HBK, Undertaker,DX and Stone Cold fans. Young girls were there to see HBK, guys were there for Stone Cold when neither of them were in the main event.
To be fair it wasn’t Hulk Hogan that held Ricky Steamboat back but his wife Bonnie
Vince wanted Steamboat to do a stretcher job on his second run to Taker. Never heard about that the first go round.
How long was the hogan-andre match ? Ten minutes ?
Not everyone likes long matches
How long would you have preferred them to go?
@@analiysanchez9949 longer than it rakes for them to get in the ring
The truth always hides behind the dust.
Yes it was a great match between macho and steamboat, but everyone was there for Hogan vs Andre
S/O to the legend, Honky Talk Man. Savage Streamboat is one of the best matches in history.
I begged my Parents to order Wrestlemania III so I could watch the Adrian Adonis/Rowdy Roddy Piper hair vs hair math/Piper's retirement. Great match!
Without a DOUBT!!! Steamboat vs Savage was THE match that night!!! Hogun was ho-hum at the very best!
Hes spot on. Love Savage-Steamboat. It was an absolute classic and a bonus. But no one stole anything from Andre and Hulk
Put it this way. Does anyone think that a hypothetical re-match of Savage vs. Steamboat would've had 10 million people watching on Saturday Night's Main Event???
True
Hands down, the best match of WIII was Hercules vs Billy Jack Haynes!
HTM is one of the greatest heels of all time. Vince gave him the ball and man, did he run with it.
and then came the ultimate warrior and crushed everybody includin' Hulk Hogan.
I agree that they came to see Andrea and Hogan, but Ricky and Macho stole the show. I remember the slam; however, I remember the Savage and Steamboat match more clearly. There has been many testimonies about Hogan sabotaging people who took the spotlight off of him.
There's a HUGE difference between Macho-Steamboat and Bundy vs midgets.
Mach VS Ricky was a classic match. Ricky might have been on to something, even though Hogan and Andre were the two most popular stars at the time.
After the fact exactly the Steamboat match with Savage was one of the best matches ever nevermind just in Mania III. They also could actually wrestle where Hogan could not and he just has his typical predictable moves
I think Steamboat would have been angry about dropping it to Beefcake.
Rickey should have had the belt for a long time. This should have been a big rivalry!
He's right and I never thought of it like that ... macho and steamboat had the best match that night but people came to see hulk n the giant that night..... FACTS
Honky Tonk Man has heat with 90% of the guys that he worked with. Yet, he’s curious about Ricky Steamboat’s heat with Hulk Hogan? 😆
Hulk Hogan would feel threatened by his own mother if she was getting a title shot or put on a 5 star match.
HTM's match with Jake was the match after Steamboat and Savage.
That’s when it turned nighttime at WM3.
And Jake vs HTM put on a great match as well.
I tuned in to see Steamboat and Savage.
HTM was a great heel intercontinental champion.
Hardly anyone knew Steamboat v Macho Man had the greatest match all time until the internet. Hardly anyone was talking about randy and ricky before during or soon after WM3. That being said to this day Hogan v Giant gets mentioned far more often than Ricky v Randy .
True and to me it was boring but that's just my taste. Macho vs Hogan Mania 5 and vs Warrior 7 were more entertaining to me.
Steamboat seems a bit sanctimonious
We can't have the title dormant for 2 weeks? Wtf is that? In those days champions had 30 days to defend their titles. I believe Hogan did have something to do with it.
Hogan was the man. A still is to this day. He is probably the greatest of all time. In my book he is. Ricky the Dragon couldn’t lace Hogans boots.
I was there and saw that match. Savage and steamboat gave us the best match of all time
Savage vs Flair WrestleMania 8 was my favorite of his followed by Savage Warrior and Savage Hogan WM 5. Very emotional matches.
Hogan was jealous of Steamboat because back then the guy who held the I.C. Title and can draw would be slotted down the road to take the world title and Vince was looking for a possible replacement for Hogan.
Vince MackMan
Honky is the best ic champ of all time. Vince made the right move.
No Honky. There were two matches that night. Savage and Steamboat was one of them.
Maybe they didn’t go to see the other wrestlers but when they left they sure did remember savage and steamboat!!
So honky took 7 minutes taking up for hogan but basically admitting everything Steamboat said was accurate
I glad to see honky back where he belongs , thx Hannibal
I love watching HTM interviews...pretty sure he tells it like it is...
I could totally see Hogan holding a grudge and bitching like a school girl that Savage and Steamboat stole that show.. He seems petty like that
That match lifted savage up. Maybe it was an opportunity for both but ricky didnt have the charimsa to take it to the next level. Savage had slmost everything.
