  • In the mid-90s, AIC resurrected a one-off to reboot it into a franchise. And while it was somewhat successful, it doesn't change the fact that all this reboot and had going for it was that it was louder, sexier and, above all else, dumber!

Gonna have to agree with Nanvel's adorable design.
I know it's a cliche but any 80s - 90s designs with twin hair buns and/or curtain bangs is instantly adorable. Same Shampoo and Chun-Li. Plus, love her color scheme of pastel blues, pinks & dark red with her tan skin~

The interesting thing about Burn Up Excess is that it's more of a reimagining of W than a straight sequel.
It addresses a lot of the problems W had with a better-structured build up/pay off to the main villain's grand plan, the characters are given a lot more development (there’s a whole episode that delves into Maya's relationship with her mob boss father) and Nanvel has a lot more time to shine with her gadgets.
Fans of the original Burn Up still probably won't be won over by Excess, but as a goofy police action series (which, by the way, doesn’t have an insane tonal shift halfway through), it gets the job done. I would honestly recommend everyone just skip straight to Excess as it does pretty much everything W should have gotten right the first time round.

Not gonna lie, Burn Up W is REALLY close to my heart. Sure it wasn't anything amazing, but I had so much fun watching it back in the day. Rio came off to me as Usagi from Sailor Moon if she became a Cop. I honestly think the biggest flaw of W is the dramatically abrupt Tonal shift in the last two episodes. For it to go from a light hearted Horny comedy to a grim High stakes drama is really jarring and kind of unearned.
I only saw a little bit of Excess though.

BTW, I recommend a video on "Lupin the 3rd: Bye Bye, Lady Liberty" from 1989. Just finished watching it with the excellent English dub track and it was an excellent entry in the Lupin film series. Susan Sheridan, who does Michael's voice (the kid), actually had me nearly tearing up at the end with her heartfelt performance of losing the character's mother. As with all of the Lupin shows, there is a lot of unrealistic craziness, but it was still a very engaging and interesting story. On Tuesday, I'll be checking out "Lupin the 3rd: Episode 0-The First Contact" from 2002.

The Latin American Spanish dub was dubbed using the English version as a base, many dubs made for the TV channel Locomotion were done that way instead of dubbing the jpn version. It actually has a cast of VAs that are still active to this day
      - Rio = Rossy Aguirre (Akane Tendo, Ami Mizuno, Hange Zoë)

I know that you may not like Excess, but I'm not lying when I say that it's a guilty pleasure of mine. 18:05 Oh Yeah, I remember seeing this. Yeah this was pretty bad storytelling at this point, and honestly I'm glad Burn-Up Excess is the superior version to this OAV. But at the same time I can't help but feel this could've been revamped, sure, this character was a one-off Frigid girl, but there honestly could've been room to add her into the Burn-Up cast. But I guess, there was already one self-sufficient glasses wearing babe in the show. I guess have 2 was just too much for the Team of 5 and their leader.

Not a fan of the animation style for the reboot. The original was way better since it was closer to the classic "Bubblegum Crisis" series. The ridiculous outfits the girls wear in the reboot are beyond stupid, since there is no police outfit anywhere that would allow that, so seeing it in a anime is just weird. One of the things that always bugged me about this anime style is the tiny highly pointed noses on girls. Why is this a thing?

I wanted to like this and maybe there are parts to like but gotta be honest the opening scene where someone gets their breasts groped was kinda gross. As a trans girl I know I can't expect older media to portray trans people in a great light but to the representation of trans people in the first like 5 minutes was really awful. You're Under Arrest also featured a trans character, and at first they sort of did her dirty, playing on bad hurtful stereotypes but there is character development and everyone grows to accept who she is and love her. I don't think that is happening in this show. No knocks to people who like this ova, I was interested in it probably for similar reasons you are but it crossed a line for me. I'll definitely check out the og ova and see what it's about.

Welp here is FIRST DISAGREEMENT hope not be a trend.......1000% sorry disagree, yes it might too dramatic unnecessary at the end of the ovas, but still I will never put Burn Up W as a bad anime, and I discover Burn Up THANKS to this one, violence and switch is tones in an ANIME is like bread and butter, you have to expect those, you start watching something cutesy and all sudden, genocides happen, not get your criticism on an anime that was made for adults audiences in mind and was based on another anime who have sex traffic as part of the theme, not understand the sensibility here, to me Burn Up was just silly action fun with ton of ridiculous fan service, is not 10 out of 10 masterpiece, let´s been honest this have plot holes galore but so many 80 and 90´s animes, have to disagree hard on your opinion here, hope be the last time but I guess we will see.

That sudden swerve into drama is awful and sadly not the worst that 90s OVAs delivered. Moldiver was pretty bad but Master of Mosquiton should go down in history for worst dramatic swerve. A shame as I ADORE Episode 2 of Burn-Up W. Also, yeah, this (or rather Excess) was probably the best anime Toshinari Yamashita worked on. I love his character designs and watched every anime he did and...yeah...they're all really bad. Second best is Grandoll. Divergence Eve is unwatchable. Also ADV can't dub their way out of a paper bag and I blame them for my hatred of dubs (especially since ADV's stuff dominated the shelves at Sam Goody).

I actually remember the blond police girl being used as random stock art for an ad for a " win a honda civic Si" contest that TheAnimeNetwork, some 24 hour anime channel way back when I guess, were doing in I believe 173rd issue of electric gaming monthly. I remember having a bit of a crush on that picture when I was way younger and always wondered if she was from something. Found out she was from this show I think a year or so ago but never got around to it, always made me wonder how they got ahold of a stock promo image of her for that ad and if this show made money through doing stuff like that. Is it like normal for anime companies to just sell art of their characters as stock art?

I enjoyed W as dumb fun but I grew up in Japan so the jokes land more for me. OVA1 parodied Matsuda Seiko who to this day poses in lingerie ads. Why do you inject 2023 USA political criticism into a 90s show set in Japan where police brutality & diversity are non-issues. W/Excess is set in 2023 & parodies politics that are relevant in 2023. Excess has an episode about Transgenders that would anger both Wings of the insane asylum that you call American politics. W had the foresight to joke about parasocial AI idols & the validity of their personhood which used Yuji as a punchline who repeats the reddit/4chan belief that AI are people, rather than just code. AI & E-celebs are both relevant 2023 politics but you'd rather focus on a capitalism critique as if the existence of Team W weren't a joke that points out Policetown's mismanagement due to crony capitalism of their HQ superiors which is exactly why Team W is both understaffed & underpaid. Even their security team is understaffed which led to a bloodbath of the administrative support since the higher ups most likely deemed them as expendable.
When combined with Maki scolding & defying her superiors you have enough subtext to logically conclude that Policetown's upper management are either incompetent or corrupt bueracrats. OVA3 & 4 are implicitly criticizing crony capitalism through the actions of the plot.
Like most Americanized people, you seem to require a talking head that quotes Wikipedia copy & pasted philosophy in order to comprehend the why & mechanics of the episodes' events. Burn Up is a dumb show, I agree but you don't seem that bright yourself when so much subtext just goes over your head which leads to you mischaracterizing the writing.
Every single episode of W & Excess tackles a different political issue but they use it as a punchline with only W OVA3&4 becoming as dark as it did.
One of the episodes lampoons the House of Saud succession wars which was very relevant during the 2010s. The Yakuza episode is about local businesses selling out to MegaCorporations, gentrifying & destroying the local culture.
If you want politics, Burn Up W & Excess is filled with it.
You're very Americanized so you seem to only comprehend a myopic performative pastiche of what you believe politics to be so you don't even notice that the OVA & tv show are a lampoon of political issues which weren't even relevant in the 90s but actually are relevant issues in 2023 which is coincidentally the year of W & Excess's setting.
I find that somewhat impressive that Burn Up's writers were able to correctly guess a lot of 2023 era politics, 30 years in advance.
Does the political parody make it deep? Hell No! I'm just pointing out that Burn Up W/Excess's writing structure is implicitly political as just a mere affect of the nature of Team Warrior's job.
DO NOT EXPECT THE POLITICAL COMPLEXITY of GHOST IN the SHELL SAC. Politics in Burn Up are merely a set up to more Booba & attempted punchlines & jokes that either land or don't depending on your culture.
Excess does tell you the identity of W's villainess (Miss Ruby) so that's an unfair criticsm when her unknown identity was intentional.
I do not understand your criticism of the virtual reality headsets when in real world 2023, we have a metaverse which is to be connected to smart cities. I don't trust Zuckernerd, Bill Gates or Elon Musk & I view their virtual reality & AI ambitions in a similar light to how I view Miss Ruby, as an enemy of the people.
TLDR: Burn Up W/Excess is a dumb show, with good music. A lot of the politics that the episodes are structured around are shockingly far more relevant today than they were when it was originally written as a joke in the 90s.

oh boy another one of those douchebag conservative wackjobs that CLAIM "hurr durr why u gotta insert dem politiks dont u no dats cringe bro?" out of one side of their mouths, but only ever seem to bring that up when it's specifically politics that upset THEM that they can't address in any other reasonable way, and just happens to be on the side OF politics they DON'T wanna hear, and thus will cherry pick any mere discussion of anything reasonable by attempting to gaslight it away with this blatantly obvious tactic that reeks of suspiciously unsaid between-the-lines bias.
It's like every time something like gay depictions in anime will come up in a video it's always "WHY ARE YOU INSERTING YOUR POLITICS IN ANIME BRO?" and then will turn around and go watch 30 Glenn Beck videos to make themselves feel better because that's the particular echo chamber they DO want repeated back to them. Just don't start thinking that anyone here is falling for your bullshit but yourself.

Only person to comment about political parallels but your comment makes you seem insane. Can you rewrite this or something?

Yeah I'm gonna watch this and be like "Hey I watch anime and Jerry Springer. That's not funny!" Like dude we don't have time machines we literally can't watch this in the right time period. Take your comment to your local BlockBuster or library and complain about this anime that just came out there.
