Every Alfie scene is absolute gold lol. I've convinced myself that they actually don't write his lines, and it's just Tom Hardy doing Tom Hardy things.
That is actually what is happening. Steven Knight confirmed this. Hardy is the only actor on the show who is allowed to ad-lib. He is given the start of a scene and where he has to land. The rest he can amend.
From an ex smoker, getting the cig butt damp will end up causing it to stick to your lips as it dries from the heat of smoking it. Your lips need to be dry, as well as the butt. That sounds wild, but yeah. Lol.
@@MFBlooshthat’s not true, I still smoke and if your lips are dry the paper around the filter sticks to your lip and hurts like a fucker when you try and take it out
@@TheGinge35 Yep, as an ex-smoker I agree, especially if you constantly leave it hanging for extended periods as you're working. It'll rip the skin right off your lips.
Rolling paper is dry and sticky. Running a cigarette (or joint) along the inside of the mouth does indeed keep it from sticking to the lips, and potentially falling apart.
If you love Tom Hardy you should watch Bronson. It's a biopic about Britain's most notorious prisoner ever. Absolute head case, but Hardy is amazing in it.
27:05 He rubs it on his lips because the herbal cigerattes they used on set were getting stuck to his lips. So I guess rubbing it on his lips first did in fact moisten it and prevented them from getting tacky and sticking. I had this exact question once and did a little research lol.
27:07 Re: the cigarette thing, Cillian Murphy said in an interview, "That comes from the fact that the cigarettes, we cut the filter off or do we leave the filter on I cannot recall, but anyway if you don't rub them across your lips initially, they will stick. That just became this sort of idiosyncrasy but it was out of necessity because otherwise the cigarettes would stick to my lip and I just kept doing it and it became a Tommy thing."
Cillian Murphy rubs the cigarettes on his lips because during early filming he found that if ge didn't it would stick to his lips so he started to rub it a little to stop it and it kind of just became a quirk of the character. As a smoker i can confirm that sometimes it does happen lol
Watch Tom Hardy in this and then watch the movie "Lawless" (2012). He does a pretty good rural Appalachian accent :) Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain
Just a tiny note of sadness I’m. Assuming you know the actress who plays Polly, Helen McCrory who was married to Damien Lewis, she died in the last series few years ago of cancer 😢aged 52.
I can't wait to get thru with y'all's peaky reactions and start y'all's soa reactions...two very good shows that I love...😅I just can't get over the peaky reactions cause I keep rewatching 😂
Hey guys. As to the cigarette thing Tommy does. When you smoke especially non-filtered cigarettes, the paper can stick to your lips. Cillian found that rubbing it against his lips 1st kept that from happening, and after a few times they decided to make it one of Tommy's idiocyncrasies. Kind of like how we never see Tommy eat.
“That comes from the fact that the cigarettes, we cut the filter off or do we leave the filter on I cannot recall, but anyway if you don't rub them across your lips initially, they will stick. “That just became this sort of idiosyncrasy but it was out of necessity, because otherwise the cigarettes would stick to my lip and I just kept doing it and it became a Tommy thing. “These things develop over the course of the show you know."
Did you know that the walk Tommy and all the Peaky Blinders use was created by Cillian ...it was part of his bag of tricks as an actor to make a slim 5'7" sweet Irishman look threatening....that and dropping the voice and weightlifting and extra protein. He is such a clever actor ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Tommy is similar to Gemma Teller in SOA (I'm watching your reactions atm on it) in the way that actually they are very emotional people but can hide it with a cool demeanor designed to front buried secrets and emotions. This is also something that seperates Tommy to Arthur as Arthur struggles with his emotions and how he conveys them. In doing what Tommy does. he shows no weakness to his enemies, in the times he should be at his most fragile.
BTW is everyone aware that cillian Murphy is executive producer of this show! Has been since series 3. He and Tom Hardy have made at least 3 movies together including Inception and theyre great buddies...their scenes together are just fantastic 🤩😅
With the cigarette and the lip thing. The rolling papers are very dry (they have to be to burn cleanly). He wets his lip and then the end of the cigarette against them to stop them sticking.
@@YouSmokeChed The Lewis Gun replaced pre WW2 in British/Commonwealth forces by the Bren. Though some retained especially for anti aircraft. "that was the plan. That's what happened." the fact that he's stressing this so much makes me believe Polly did set him up but it was a "no harm no foul" type situation since Tommy believes/& stressed the fact how much he needs polly enough and therefore he won't punish that betrayal out of sheer group and self-preservation
The question at 27:05. Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and most of the cast smoked fake (herbal) cigarettes. The paper was thin and had a tendency to leave small paper residue on their lips. Tommy adopted the habit of rubbing these fake cigarettes across his lips to prevent this. FUN FACT: The cast smoked approximately 3,000 of these fake herbal cigarettes per season. Also love this series, as well as the reactions and opinions both of you share along this journey! You two are awesome!

27:05 not all smokers do this and this is kinda Thomas’ “tick” so to speak, but if your lips are dry and flakey (like if you’ve been getting shot at in a trench for weeks) and you go to smoke, the cigarette will annoyingly stick to your lips when you try to exhale. Licking your lips and rubbing the cigarette around them will prevent this
I think it's difficult for poly to betray Thomas because she herself said that he gave power to the family and stopped the police from stepping on them, and she was always on his side
Yes she is right, Tommy Gun was the nickname for that weapon. It's a Thompson Sub Mahine Gun, back in this era you could purchase one of them just about any where.

Because you see back then cigarette filters were different they're different back then okay and if you didn't roll them on the mouth the paper would stick to your mouth International interview with Killian Murphy where he explains why he does that Valerie can find a beach and you can find it okay

I figure he rubs the cigarette but against his lips every time due to a habit he could have picked up in his military service as a tunneler. Makes it easier to firgure out which side of the cigarette you have in your mouth before you light it
