Mellie was completely misunderstood in the first few seasons. Being married to Fitz would be an absolute nightmare. she was doing her best to contain his character flaws and try to steer them both towards more ambitious goals than he had, because he was too busy feeling victimised by everyone and daydreaming of Olivia.
I will never forget the scene in season 3 when he found out about her affair and she was showing him ties that matched with her dress she was going to wear for a speech she was doing for his re-election, and he took them out of her hand and threw them to the floor. In the next scene during the speech he's wearing a tie that does not match. He was a petty, childish, entitled hypocrite.
Fitz has every right to be upset at Mellie. She is always doing stuff that he don't ask her to do always making decisions for him. During the campaign trail she lied about a miscarriage to help get sympathy votes, the gender reveal she said Fitz was gonna invade sudan when he hadn't made a decision yet, she went behind Fitz back with Olivia and helped her with a family of a girl who was killed by a certain political fiqure because Fitz wouldn't help them. Mellie throwing in Fitz face how he's mean and tough with the kids when they are home where she don't interact with them at all. She barely holds Teddy unless its in front of the cameras or photo shoots. Fitz isn't the monster in the marriage. Both people have their flaws and issues.
@@faithwatkins7811 you really don’t see it, do you? There was nothing else for Mellie to get from that marriage but benefit after the hell she went through with him. He stopped loving her and fell in love with Olivia, treating Mellie like crap and making her feel useless and stupid, he honestly was a monster to her and yes, Mellie did awful things too but only to get what she wanted bc after all that, she deserved it, she earned it, and she had to show him he was full of himself and she could easily destroy him if she wanted to but didn’t bc somehow she loved him. In this same scene she didn’t want to tell him they children didn’t wanna come bc she didn’t wanna hurt him but as always he started yelling at her and she told him off. She still loved him even after how bad he treated her and after knowing about the affair with Olivia but at some point she stopped bc she knew there was nothing left between them and she was done with him. So stop trying to make Mellie the villain, if you really paid attention to the show, Fitz was the mean one and the jerk, not her.
"It's because you found that your precious Olivia doesn't have the secrets of the universe tucked between her magical thighs..." He had Olivia on a very high pedestal and when she fell, she made a big thud.
I just wish Mellie had told the truth to his face instead of developing a habit of concealing things to avoid hurting him. She loved him and he was stupid and selfish. She should've also told him about his father raping her at that time itself. Wish she'd gotten the strength to deal with that trauma early on
I agree. In this scene, it seems like she's trashing and attacking Fitz, but at the same time, you can tell she cares. She's telling him all these things because she's trying to help him.
Fitz doesn't even love mellie, it was mellie who was fighting against a divorce from fitz. Why would she want to stay in a dead marriage? Fitz doesn't even consider mellie to be the love of his life.

This is one of my favourite scenes. Fitz is such a man child at times. It started getting tedious.
