    Interesting pattern:)
    It's like a wilder, untrimmed version of the pattern I want to make.
    I'd bet that this pattern would be really visible on the surface of a reservoir, even at night.
    I think I'll give it go, thanks :)

    We call this a hedgehog here in Scotland. It's a tremendous fly ginked up high.

    Hi Barry, Thank-you for all your wonderful videos. And your great book "Flytying Techniques" which I read day and night. Like many fly-tyers, I can't stop fiddling with patterns but with this fly I have hit a brick wall. I have become obsessed with the idea that a small section of emu feather tied in at the head so as to suggest legs protruding at right angles to the hook shaft would look attractive but I cannot see a way of doing so. Thoughts, please?

      Thanks Donald, Tie the fly as in the book and then attach your legs right behind the hook eye. Good luck!

      @@Thefeatherbender The first one that I tied was very rough! They just kept getting better. What a fun tie! I love working with deer and elk hair! :-)

    Really nice looking and I like the method you used to polish up the hair. Don't know if I dare, but if I mess up it is just a fly, right? All the best and thanks for sharing. Sean

    when you tie in the first bunch of deer hair are you holding the tips so they all stay on top or letting them all spin around the shank? i am having a lot of trouble with this one but im determined to get it

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brandon, Yes your'e correct, you have to hold the tips of every bunch on top of the hook shank to stop it spinning. All the butt ends will spin and flare but not the tips. Once you get it right it'll stick. Good luck.

    have the fish never cared about the smell of burning hair? admittedly i'm no expert but wouldn't that potentially make a fish hesitate and not take?

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Skidin, No I don't think I have ever come across a trout that smells the fly before it takes, and I'v never had any problem catching fish with flies that have been singed!

      fair enough! like i said, i'm no expert, not at fly tying or at fly fishing. my instincts are just "burning hair is a pretty strong scent, wouldn't the fish just get a nosefull of it as he's coming up for it?" but if you say that it doesn't matter i'm absolutely inclined to believe you
