- The western Reykjanes peninsula, which had slumbered for 800 years without an eruption, is now experiencing a dramatic reawakening of volcanic activity. Iceland, which is one of the most volcano-prone countries in the world, has witnessed three dramatic eruptions since December 2023. And scientists believe it’s just the beginning of a long period of volcanic activity.

You must also say how this People is fighting as LIONS !!! They re-install electricity, hot water that have been destroyed by earthquakes and lava flows, reopen roads, work day and night for that in a terrible cold at night ! They are very very courageous. Their government plans to buy all the houses in Grindavik so that the people is not completely ruined by the eruptions. I have a lot of admiration for Icelandic People !
1) They should be happy there are some eruptions so that they warm up a bit, it is pretty cold and not nice to live there. 2) They should probably just depart from those areas with volcano activity instead of fighting like lions as you say, maybe move somewhere to central Asia where there are no volcanos or so.

My father had some very close business associates in Iceland and he and my mom traveled there several times. My heart goes out to the humble people of Iceland. It’s a living nightmare.
You know how Iceland came to exist? Because exactly this happened many, many times. It's not a surprise, it's just an ongoing natural phenomena. Nature is not good or evil, it's indifferent. And beautiful.

It's also a unique - not to mention really dangerous - working environment. It's not every day you see heavy machinery being used near an active lava flow.
Gutsy workers with earth moving equipment, trucks, etc. Anything could happen! Prayers for folks in Iceland, that it doesn’t get worse.

I'm no volcanologist, but that lava did seem like it was moving rather fast. For lava.....
It was. It surprised even the experts.
It found a channel that had a steeper slope than other recent flows.
It certainly was. I remember, at the front of the recent Hawaiian eruptions, people were filming the lava moving really very slowly.
My geology teacher said that unless it is flowing down the side of a steep volcano, you only need take a gentle stroll to stay ahead of the least viscous lava flow.

Lava is a lot older than 800 years and Iceland is a very interesting natural area sitting on two continual plates, kind of like Yellowstone and the Big Island of Hawaii which are sitting on holes in the crust.
800 years is the last time is area had eruptions.that is what there talking about.

@@sharont1 Forget repaving streets. The town is DEAD. The question is of insurance, who's going to pay, for relocating the townspeople to other communities. The only thing they are trying to save now is the thermal / electrical power plant and the Blue Lagoon which is a major tourist attraction.

Iceland is not in any danger. This event is just increasing the size of Iceland and is absolutely normal. However, there are always hidden dangers living on any island that has so many Volcanic activities. Hawaii for example have been living with this kind of environment for thousands of years...

Feeling very sorry for the Icelanders affected by all this. It must be distressing indeed. The uncertainty of not knowing just how far this eruption is going to go, or for how long must be very stressful for people who have or had a home in that area.
Hoping that the government helps the people who are continuing to suffer, losing homes, facilities, access, and possessions, paying out big time for rented accommodation (and that they won't just favour the tourist industry or big businesses, as governments are wont to do in certain other countries).

Old in as much the last eruption started and ended last week. It’s still an ongoing story with parts of Iceland without hot water or heat. And there could be another eruption in 3 or so weeks.

this is a very fast lava. due to its material composition.
it had to rise from the earth's core through the mantle, that's why it's speed. the lava temperature there is huge now, much higher than before.
and it will not subside. this is confirmed by the many earthquakes. these are not earthquakes, but lava rising from the core. so much pressure there now.

There isn´t that much snow in Iceland, it isn´t very cold. It is a misunderstanding - because of the name of the country, of course. The ocean around Iceland doesn´t freeze over in winter - there is the Gulf Stream, look it up.

It erupted a few days ago.
Yep, Kind of loosing count now of the eruptions on Reykjanesskagi. One in 2021, one in 2022, two in 2023 and then this one last week, just up and running for few days but the lava manage to go surprisingly far, destroying hot-water pipelines (people in Iceland use geothermal energy to heat up the houses). Hopefully repairs will finish this week so houses can be heated (30.000 people live in the area). Grindavík's future bleak, probably the state will buy all houses in Grindavík (about 4000 people live there) and maybe the village will not be more, although probably some activity around the harbor. Most likely, the next eruption will start after few weeks.

No, still there. Eruption itself happened at a location about 4 kilometers away, and the lava flow itself flowed safely around the Blue Lagoon, though a road and hot water pioes were damaged.
