    This is highly regulated and sustainable fishery. There is a quota allocated to each vessel. Obviuosly by some of the negative comments some individuals are talking about things they know nothing about.

      Regulated under the CFP. Not sure how much faith we can have in that.

      DAS 265 I was on a boat from Reykjavik, Iceland (I am an Icelander) Helga RE49. Here you can see a picture of her but when I was on it, it did not have the deck covered or the trawl ramp.

I cant remember the skippers name but he gave me a video tape of him catching cod with gillnets.. I put it on utube a few months ago and u can view it at ;; cod fishing in Iceland;;.. if you recognise him you could let me know about him or his boat

    The bigger picture few know about. Herring are a primary food source of the tuna the Japanese love to eat, yet they pay a premium for the Herring roe. Imagine a packing ship catches a 1,000 ton load of herring. they remove the equivalent of two pinkies worth of row and the rest of the fish as well as all the males go into giant disposal units and dumped back into the sea as waste.

    • @samkom33
      @samkom33 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least in norway nothing of the herring is wasted even if they take the ROW out for export to japan...
      The rest goes to produce fish oil and fishmeal. and most of the fish meal and some of the oil
      is used for protein and binder in say salmon feed pellets and most of the oil go to say oil paint.

  • @fjs5395
    @fjs5395 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The negative comments obviously come from those not aquatinted with the fishery which is regulated and quotas are set biased on scientific advice. Obviously the fishery is being managed well and as we can see there are still plenty fish to catch. Maybe some people should research the subject they wish to comment on before writing negative comments.

      Ronnie Heinesen do you even know what the definition of a primary food source is?
      It is a food source that accounts for the majority of your diet. Is your diet comprised of 60% herring? No? Then i dont think sardines are a primary food source for you or human kind.
      A primary food source for humans would be a grain such as rice or wheat.

    So the net broke? What happened to it? Dumped at sea to go on snaring and killing fish for years to come, or was it taken aboard and repaired?

    • @DAS-mc5mt
      @DAS-mc5mt  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Colin Gantiglew the net was taken on board, repaired meticulously and used again for many years

    • @peteacher52
      @peteacher52 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      DAS 265 Thank you; reply appreciated - I was hoping that was the case with the broken net. I've seen too many pictures of lost or discarded nets festooning wrecks and snags, but still doing a deadly work. Cheers.

    • @carrickbender
      @carrickbender 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colin Gantiglew Most nets that you see like that have had "bad things" happen to them, such as main wires "parting" due to snags and the net not coming back, severe weather, eact.i think I can speak for most fishermen when I say nobody wants to have any gear "ghost fishing", still killing fish. Nets are not cheap, and no matter how difficult they are to fix(those mesh are tiny!), its better to do that than toss em overboard.

    G'day from Australia. Regulation of YOUR fishery only works if the regulation are right for your fisheries. After a long time of over kill here, I thing and I hope we have now the ability to fish smarter and protect the breeding stock.
    Marine parks are absolutely necessary for stock replenishment. Fishing( commercial and rec ) can happen fishing the boundaries for the fish that don't know what a boundary is.
    Our prawn fishery is world practice now. We gave up the tuna slaughter from catch what ever we could and can it , to catch what we are aloud and value add while other Countries SAID they have done the same but lied to the whole world and have been caught out
    I watch" for cod sake " and stop near 2/3 of the way through and was amazed by the stupidity of the EU state free for all mentality .
    AND for OUR kids kids, LETS not get it wrong. PLEASE
    Cheers, Frank

    What does herring taste like? Is it a mild fish or is it very oily with a strong flavor?

    • @DAS-mc5mt
      @DAS-mc5mt  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      schlaznger...herring have a very mild taste... they usually need to be fried in oatmeal or soused in vinegar to give them a bit of flavour. the other option is to smoke them and make kippers. they are only oily during the summer season when they start to feed. they will make up to 22% fat then the fat goes into the roe for spawning. after spawning their body fat is reduced to 4-6% and are very thin and called spenters.these are no good for eating but they put on a little fat for the winter when 8-9% and are caught for the sursild market

      By your comments this is obviously a fishery you know nothing about. Does it not register in your simple mind that the reason these quantities of fish are still being caught today is due to the stock being well managed and not overfished. Why would any commercial fisherman deplete the stocks as his future depends on fish being there for future generations.

      The biggest problem here is the comments by erik s and mikey e who obviously are talking about a fishery they know nothing about! This fishery is extremely well managed and the quota is based on scientific advice. Have the pair of you ever considered the possibility that the reason the vessel was able to catch this large haul could be down to the fact that it is well managed and that obviously there are still plenty fish in the sea. My advice would to you would be to engage your brain before putting your mouth in gear!
