My 4 year old asked me, "what if there was no God." Thank you for reminding me to check out Got Questions and to go to the bible instead of just giving him my answer right away.
Thank you so much for this. We’ve been using your curriculum for ages 4+ for my five and six year old and have been loving it. Someone shared this video with me when I asked them for guidance. My 6 year old has been asking me almost the same question as in this video, but along the lines of if God plans and knows everything, then God planned for me to sin and along the same lines, asking that if He knew Satan would be evil why doesn’t he just stop him now? I wasn’t expecting big apologetic questions from her this young. 🤪
We're glad you've been enjoying the curriculum! And, yes, kids do ask the greatest questions! Helping them understand the relationships between God's sovereignty and our free will isn't easy, but it is important. :)
My three year old son asked me what does "debts" mean in the Lord's prayer (forgive us our debts). My answer was that where we lack love for God and neighbor, that is debt. I would still like to know how Elizabeth would answer that question.
Hi, it’s Elizabeth here. :) I love that your child is asking this question! I would explain the term “debt” to a child by first borrowing something from them (a toy, a cookie, a dollar, etc.). Then explain that you owe them something (a toy, cookie, dollar, etc.). Then, explain that a debt is owing someone something. You can then explain that whenever we sin, we owe God a debt for doing the wrong thing. However, rather than making us pay that debt, God sent Jesus to pay that debt for us. You can take your child to Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Then you can explain that because God has forgiven our debt of sin through Jesus, we can forgive others when they sin against us.
John C Peckham has a great book called Theodicy of Love. When I knew my wife was pregnant I knew my son would eventually sin, I knew he would probably rebel at some stage and hopefully I could maintain a good relationship with him even if he doesn't chose to be a Christian. I knew all this before he existed but because I wanted a family I was willing to bring an object of love into the world. God doesn't stop you from living because you are not God and not perfect. God is not a tyrant like other leaders in history that tried to control every aspect of people's lives and killed people who didn't meet their standard - God's not like that at all. The other things is Lucifer and Satan aren't people in the strickeat sense. Satan means "accuser". "ha satan" means the accuser, this is the construction in Job and all the other passages where an accuser is mentioned. Good answer in the video though.
At 12:40 the answer is finally given, we do not know. I wish that the answer had been prefaced in the beginning and THEN to go into the rest of the 10 minutes of saying who God is. I think this came up in my algorithm because of the study I have been doing in the book of Job. The Book of Job is a great one to study on our own, without purchasing the books that are mentioned at the end. Probably good books, but I highly recommend a study Bible. Just today I read it Chapter 42 about Job repenting and (paraphrased )saying “God, you’re trustworthy and I know you. I don’t understand, but knowing you and trusting you is enough.” Also, to the sweet lady giving this recommendation in the film, you are sweet and photogenic- sweet heart too…the way you are speaking is like you are speaking to a child, but primarily you are speaking to adults and the tone sounds inappropriate and distracting. I’m just saying this as a critique. I think more parents (dads and moms) would appreciate a different tone and talk like an adult, at least my husband and I would. Sincerely, Biblical homeschooling mom of 3 for 11 years.
Excellent

Great topic. I remember asking this very question when I was a young teen.❤

I actually like her tone, and I'm in my 40s! Your critique is just your opinion. I listen to her because of her tone!
