I actually found your channel via a comment you made on an Atreyu video about a week back, so fun timing seeing this here. Loving the content and the unique approach to youtube shoe content. You hit on something here that is a big deal to me, because it's something that turned my running career around. I'd had a few attempts at becoming a "runner" over the course of my life, but always ended up hurt and miserable. 20 years ago I wanted to love running, but my calves and shins hurt constantly so I quit. Tried again 10 years later when the minimalist trend was promising "injury free running"... and ended up hurt again. Tried again a while back hoping all the new technology would work for me. I was headed down the same path until I noticed something at a parkrun. All of us slow runners made a ton of noise running. Each foot strike came with some combination of scuff, slap, or thud, while the fast runners just sounded like they were tapping on the ground. I then decided I was gonna try to learn how to "run quietly" and in a matter of weeks I naturally became a forefoot striker with a higher cadence and, most importantly, way less pain. That breakthrough allowed me to run in much lower stack and lighter shoes. So when I saw the language on the Atreyu site you referenced about these shoes being a tool to tune your form, it really struck a chord with me. The base model is the perfect shoe for "quiet running". It just seems so crazy to me that we're all participating in a forceful physical activity and every ache s addressed with more foam while we continue to zone out, put in the headphones, and run in shoes that are designed to mask any physical feedback we could get. It'd be like someone blindfolding themselves, and listening to a podcast while trying to learn to play the guitar.
Really well said. Learning to run “quietly” and being mindful of that is so important. Listening to your foot strikes is a amazing way to stay in touch with your form. It’s an easy way to know if you need some tuneup work. It’s one of the many reasons I never run with music or headphones. Ultimately it comes down to ground contact time a metric that is very important to watch and see where it is in relation to cadence. What Atreyu is doing is really a unique and rare thing in running. For sure. I’m glad you find value in my content. 🤙🏻
I am a huge fan of Atreyu. There's a lot to like. I enjoy the simplicity and comfort of the original Base Model and V2. I also really like The Artist but I'll save that for another day. I liked the "disposable" 😁 Mayfly as well but like the Base Model better...lasts longer too. I run in them with and without socks so a great triathlon option. Glad I found your channel. Happy running! 😎🤙
So insightful to get your experience here! Thanks for the candid feedback on the shipping experience. No excuses, and I'm trying to understand how I can be better with my recources. Always learning. On a side note, thanks for following our channel and the new evolution of the brand!!! Wishing you well with your channel as well!!!
I’m stoked to see where you take the brand over the next few years. The preview you gave of the new product in your last video was very exciting. I’m really looking forward to the Base Model v3!
I have just started running in the Base Model v2 (about 20 miles so far) and I am in LOVE. My shoe faves are Kinvarra OG, Topo Cyclone 2, Adios 8. This shoe is right in that lane. I really find myself thinking about my foot strike and power off more, even, than I do in the Adios. It really does help me tune. I wish Atreyu much success because they are doing something different, foundational and important in the shoe/ running market.
The lightest shoe I’ve raced in was an Adidas flat that was 3 oz. Still have them! I should send you a pic. Actually, I still own literally every pair shoes I’ve run/raced all over the world in over the past 22 years. 💪🏼🙏🏽👟😊
What model was that? The lightest Adidas flat I remember was the Sub 2 and they were 5.6oz. I’m curious now. I’m not a collector now do I have the space to store stuff often (I most live out of a suitcase) but I have collected a handful of important shoes (to me) over the years. Maybe 10 years from now on this channel I can do a walk down memory lane. 😂
@@SagasuRunning I’m going to dig it out for you. Bear with me… have a lot of shoes that have piled on top of it! 💪🏼🙏🏽👟🤪 ….Ps. Another great episode yesterday!
That level of lightness is insane! This reminds me (sort of) of a dirt cheap walking/jogging shoe that I bought a while ago - it was 180gr. in US 9, but the upper was extremely warm, so I bought a hole punch and punched a bunch of holes in it to breathe. P.S. It turns out you have to punch a lot, a lot of holes and make them as close as possible without tearing the material. If you get them spread apart even a little it just doesn't work, especially if the upper is thick.
Interesting. You should check out some of the recent videos Michael is doing on the Atreyu channel. He had one on shoe liners that was the same DIY vibe as what you did.
@@SagasuRunning 👍Thanks. I found the video and even left him a comment. I took a peek at these Nike Mayfly and it's insane, that's the sort of shoe I like, sad that I have to play cobbler to get something similar, hah Also it's funny that Nike Mayfly and Atreyu share similariies in their animal - both have insects as logos. I think Atreyu's is a wasp or something.
@@kylestephens9593 The Mayfly was a BIG influence in Michael and Atreyu as I remember. I vaguely remember him going into it all in a livestream on Instagram years ago.
Interesting to hear you mention that you now wear half a size smaller. Is this a result of particular foot strengthening exercises or a natural consequence of forefoot running? It’s a subject I’m really interested in, particularly as it seems that as running shoe foams and geometry have changed so much that there is less emphasis on beginner runners needing stronger feet for running efficiently. I think that working on foot strength could be still be beneficial for some runners (including myself) but am not sure where to start due to how many different opinions there are on how to go about this, including some which could be perceived as being out of date or overly zealous. I’ve heard you speak about this when covering your Luna sandals and the “Born to Run” movement/ books but I am wondering what your thoughts are on this now (what exactly worked for you/ didn’t) and if you’d be able to recommend some resources?
I’ve been a forefoot runner for about 12 years now, maybe a bit longer. But it wasn’t until I started running the the Atreyu in this video where I REALLY started paying attention to mechanics and foot strength. I also started some foot strengthening work a few years ago, did it off an on, but once I had my bad PF last fall really doubled down on it and now do it daily. I started buying size 9 shoes about a year ago now. Search “Eric Orton foot core” on TH-cam. Eric is the coach in Born to Run and his channel is a wealth of information and foot/leg strengthening work. The Born to Run 2 book is really a distillation of what he has been publishing on his channel for years. So I’ve been doing a lot of his drill and “foot core” for years now. In addition to forefoot running and a lot of running in Lunas early in the year for me. It adds up but is vital for all runners. This fact alone is the main issue I have with the push now for people to run full time in plated “daily trainers”. It’s such a disservice to runners all together.
No, I’d not recommend it for that due to outsole durability. If you are interested in Atreyu as a brand but want a shoe better for walking… try the “Daily Trainer”. It’s a similar stack height, geometry and upper… but with a full rubber outsole.
My wife is Taiwanese so we decided to spend a few months here in 2021 but haven’t found a reason to leave yet. Though we are traveling more and more lately so being permanently based anyone place may be coming to an end.
I have the artist with over 400km. I really like the company, the simplicity of the shoe and dont have issues with heal slippage everyone says about that shoe. For me the artist feels flat, bottom heavy, and I cannot feel the plate. I think I should have just bought the base model.
I'm not a fan of atreyu. They had a good idea for a business model, but bad execution (and the problem, that consumers often like variety). I bought the artist from them. the foam is not much better then eva, so I repurposed the shoe for cycling. The carbon plate helps with bending stiffness when pushing the pedals.
They product is definitely not for everyone, which is why I stressed how crazy it was they started in the first place in 2020. The Base Model is a total outlier though… Interesting repurposing there. When I was a teen I used to use soccer cleats on flat pedals… so been there with cycling shoe repurposing.
