      Pondiker as a person that played the demo that came out years before the full game I found it via a 3 free game Friday by nerd^3. It stopped at the 1st Kraken seen and you could figure out the fates of the
      captain the person referred to by the 1st mate (the person who would be captain if the captain died) as captain before he got shot and him saying him "would be with you soon my love" to Abigail before shooting himself
      1st mate the brother of Abigail said was to be shot by the captain in a distressed tone to Abigail before he killed himself
      and Abigail the wife of the captain as shown in her death and last name and sister of the 1st mate found by seeing her maiden name in the ship record
      there is more than enough for the captain to be known at the start even without the painting being there

    I know this is super late, but you were very clever in how you approached the general mystery. And you took it slower, which is 100% the smart way to progress. Its always so sad watching the Doom, because you realize the extent every single one of the survivors is grieving and traumatized. They were all hurt, all watched people die gruesomely. You notice that all of the final mutineers in The End are a) often seen together) and b) watched some of the most horrible deaths in the game - the cannon deaths, the Kraken deaths, and Abigail. Maba is a hero, and gets one of the two most horribly graphic deaths in the game. The Midshipmen are all in way over their head and doing thier best. The first deserters are killed horribly off-screen. By The escape there is not a single person on this vessel that isn't grieving.

    Seeing people give solutions and hints while cheekily posing it as a question in chat like they don't know the answer was infuriating lol.
    Pretty good run, it was a joy to see Otz play this. Also interesting that he found Murder so early, for me that was the very last chapter bc I saw. Finding Nichols' identity with only The Calling is kind of tough.

    • @g80gzt
      @g80gzt หลายเดือนก่อน

      What was more infuriating was Otz not pinning the only Frenchman name on the only guy in a french navy uniform, for multiple hours, even suspecting of a guy with the concentric-circle-tattoos of being a frenchman. Because, you know, a Kraken attack can *never* result in *more* than one person getting torn apart, so if someone is said to be torn apart, they're the only one who could've gotten torn apart.
      Definitely not a guy from New Guinea and a guy from France *both* being torn apart.

    • @andrewmatos8300

      @@g80gzt Lots of people make that mistake and it's quite clearly intended by the developer as a red herring, so I don't understand why you're so infuriated by this. There are plenty of times where the obvious solution is the correct one in the game.

  • @AvanToor
    @AvanToor ปีที่แล้ว +36

    The logical mistake I've seen people make in the Charles Miner/Maba mix-up is assuming that, in a kraken attack, one and only one person can be torn apart.

  • @Deadgye
    @Deadgye ปีที่แล้ว +9

    General tips for playing if you bought this part-way through the video like I did:
    1. Utilize the "Unknown TYPEHERE" placeholders often. Even if you can't name a person yet (their portrait is blurred) you can still mark them as a placeholder. For example in that one particularly electrifying subchapter you can mark all the blurred topman as unknown topman. Or after you confirmed someone in a uniform as one type you can mark the other people wearing practically the same uniform as the same type.
    2. When re-investigating people to determine cause of death you're usually better off starting with the latest memory the appear in and working backwards, rather than their first memory and working forwards.
    3. If you want to cycle through all the unknown / unconfirmed people you have left don't use the crew list as the jumping point (Name -> Picture). Instead, page through the chapters you haven't finished and use the portraits as the jumping points. This makes it much less likely that you'll accidentally overwrite a name / placeholder or accidentally remove a name from a person you were sure of.

It will be explicitly spelled out if you leave early and get a bad (well, not perfect) ending, since it still plays that "you returned the book to Henry Evans in Morocco as requested" and you get a different letter from Jane Bird.

    normally with your long videos they work to help me sleep since i can imagine what’s going on, but i was WAY too invested in this to sleep! next i have to check out your papers please video 😊

    4:22:00 theres a bloody sword, a guy being dragged away, and a missing leg. and he's like 'well its inconclusive'
    this video can be very frustrating (like with beng too)

      I agree. Imo its a strong case of why this game is best played in multiple sessions... I'm guessing its from information overload that he keeps missing things the game is trying to spell out as clearly as possible.

    Otz is a staple of the Dbd community, but he has definitely grow as a creator enough to play other games and keep the same audience. I cant wait to see what other games he plays in the future

    Otz, I'd love you to play more games like this every so often! So awesome.

    If you enjoyed this game a lot, you should absolutely check out the game Outer Wilds if you haven't played it yet (not to be confused with the game "The Outer Worlds" made by Obsidian)
    It's the kind of game you want to go in as blindly as possible, and you will not regret it. A lot of people wish they could play the game blindly for the first time again. *(I would even avoid trailers and most stuff on the Steam page, if possible)*
    Outer Wilds has you solve a big mystery and you'll put all the pieces together while the game doesn't hold your hand too much, many people compare it to Obra Dinn when it comes to that.
    Much of the game is focused on exploration and having curiosity to discover everything and you can take whatever route you want, no real unnecessary limits.

    • @NinjarioPicmin
      @NinjarioPicmin ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely this!!! I'll also reply here with what i commented myself for more info:
      Hey Otz, i know it isn't by the same creator but if you would want to have another mind blowing gaming experience i can only recommend you to try the game "Outer Wilds" in the same way as you did with these. Return of the Obra Dinn, Outer Wilds and very few other gems are always recommended in the same breath. The most important thing about it though is, you would want to know AS LITTLE, if NOTHING about it before going in. And even when playing it you'd likely have to moderate chat more then normal in order not to get spoiled about it. Outer Wilds is all about discovery. Experiencing the world you are thrown into. Letting your own curiosity drive you to explore and figure out, well whatever you find and get interested in.

    One thing I really hate when watching streamers play this game, is their chat telling them stuff, giving them hints. Dude, the whole point of this game is to enjoy figuring stuff out, why would anyone tell the streamer solutions or hints ??? Some people are incorrigible backseaters.

    • @rency1803
      @rency1803 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I mean most streamers just straight up doesn't pay attention to stuff. Like so many streamer I've seen playing this game always miss the fact that the game unblur the faces of people who you have enough information to deduce, something that the game directly tell you.

    So I am about halfway trough the video and I was about to congratulate otz for not trying to use the fate validation to brute force identities and instead figure stuff out himself, only for him to start doing exactly that the moment I started typing in the comments

    I finished playing this game for the first time the other day. It's so good! Lucas Pope has shown that you can make great games about a monotonous task and develop a great story with it (Yes I stole that line from Yahtzee - he is more "eloquent" than I :D) I look forward to watching all of this!
