On this edition of the ArsenalVision Podcast, Elliot is joined by Clive to discuss a disappointing draw at Fulham where Arsenal struggled to create chances from open play. The pod starts with a bit of an overview of the game and reaction to the dropped points, including the gut punch of a late winner ruled out. Then the conversation shifts to the lineup and the decision to play Partey at right back. There’s a bit on William Saliba impressing again before the pod discusses the lack of offensive firepower and attempts to answer whether Arsenal have enough quality in attack. Some other key moments of the game are discussed as well as a few other individuals like Rice, Kai, Jesus and Martinelli, before the bigger picture is revisited. There’s a bit on Chelsea beating spurs as well. After the game is fully analyzed, the pod looks ahead to the Fulham game on Sunday All that and more on this edition of the ArsenalVision Podcast.

Guys let's just admit the squad building the last 2 years has been poor and Artetas squad management is even worse. There's no need to constantly play players out of position if we have 1 or 2 injuries. There was no need to destroy the right hand side by taking out Timber. There was no need to destroy the midfield by taking out Partey. Why did we buy Merino if Jorginho is starting before him? Why does he keep dropping Havertz into midfield when everyone can see its never worked? He keeps making the same mistakes over and over.

The answer is unequivocally NO. Arteta has deviated so much from swashbuckling speed attack to this plodding slow ball movement that utilizes none of the skills our attackers possess which explains why we struggle so much without Odegaard to make telling passes because everything is so slow.
Last year we produced those results due to quick ball movement and removing Rice from the 6 position who is the #1 culprit in delaying attacks. Unless we get back to that approach in attacking, I don’t see how we score enough goals to sustain long winning runs.
Elliot , as far as Liverpool having lower XG but scoring more goals it’s because they have better finishers than us and if we are going to play with this slow tempo in attack then that reduces our chances of scoring even further. We have a striker who cannot strike the ball and we take forever to switch the play or get the ball quicker to Martinelli so he can use his speed and dribble skills. Yesterday was a perfect example of this lack of urgency; Martinelli was way inside but it took at least 3 touches by Timber to make a pass that was on the whole time he received it. That’s the crux of our current problems the same as last year before Christmas.

    No
And the acknowledgement must first be because of the manager's tactics and philosophy before any kind of conversation about player quality. 5yrs in, no discussion can be about arteta needing x player to make his system work, we're past that now
Our attack systematically is too lopsided and as Clive said there's not enough in central areas. These problems have been there for awhile

To Clyve‘s question what our attacking reinvention could be this year: I wholeheartedly believe it could be Nwaneri playing on the LW.
He is actually a threat when he is taking on a defender, not like Martinelli who didn’t dribble past anyone since ages. They‘ll need two players to defend Nwaneri, similar to Saka. His crosses with his left leg will be far superior to Martinelli‘s and it looks like he has a decent shot with his right foot too, which means his crosses with his right foot could also be quality. Also he will be there to score when Saka or Timber cross the ball into the penalty area. He sniffs those chances out.
Him, Ødegaard and Saka playing together will improve our attack without a shadow of a doubt.
What’s to lose? Martinelli is not good enough. If it doesn’t work it surely won’t be worse than with Martinelli and if it works we might even don’t have the need to spend big money next summer for this position and can buy a killer upfront.
I hope Arteta can see this too

  • @proppamedzja
    @proppamedzja 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

The attack isn't good enough tbh. Big Gabi and Timber are more likely to score than every attacker except for Saka and Trossard. What I would give for an Alexis sanchez type who would break a game open. Feels like it has to be on a platter for kai or martinelli to score.
But as long as we have saka and odegaard from open play and saka and rice on corners, we'll always have a chance. Strong run to finish the year and we'll all feel a lot better.

Saying our team got 89 points, or we scored lots of goals, doesn’t automatically make ALL your players top level. I'm saying I wouldn't want a more "traditional no 9" but that is no guarantee of success, it would for sure mean another adaptation of the way the team plays because the system requires more from the focal point of the attack than to just hang around the box. My guess is they saw two areas that needed addressing in the summer, up front and the left side. The left side was clearly the priority given our goalscoring record last season, it's just unfortunate that the 2 players brought in have both had injury issues. The PSR rules dictate that you can't address multiple areas at one time without some compromise financially. Arsenal lacks aggression, they play at too slow a tempo and are not direct enough. Arsenal owners are too cheap, they should have bought Gyokeres last summer, they have no excuse for not buying him because he was available. Gyokeres is durable, robust, he is good in the air, can shoot with both feet, he's fast, powerful, extremely good at pressing, and can play across the frontline. I love Clive and Elliot but some of their commentary comes across as running interference for Arsenal.
Arteta is a young manager who is still learning. He has a bright future but has some serious blindspots in his management philosophy and tactics.
£65m spent on Havertz was an atrocious piece on business making a very limited guy our highest earner.
Jesus and Zinny overall were poor investments which have had a ridiculously short useful life. High maintenance players who are not good at basic things.
Rice and Merino are the future of the team but Mikel still insists on Partey and Jorginho. He is wasting our time trying to force Rice into becoming an attacking 8 when everyone knows he is an elite 6.
He plays our best right back in Timber at left back, our best progressive midfilder as a right back and our best finisher (Trossard) on the wing or in midfield.
He took too long to move Eddie on and we find ourselves paying £100k a week for a Chelsea reject he doesn't even trust.
He doesnt play Nwaneri in the easier home league games to help him find his feet but throws him on for the final minutes at Fulham expecting him to work miracles.
He never goes for the simple solution as obvious things are beneath him.

I would still prefer us to play past the pressure and release faster from the middle third. I feel like we play slowly and in trying to beat a deep block we control the game and that means our primary tactic is to create corner kicks. Set Pieces are POSITIVE, that is not a stick to beat Arsenal with; yet there are multiple phases to consider in play and in open play I do not think we are progressive enough at the moment. We are good at breaking down a deep block, but I would like us to play faster and not depend on a controlled attack against a deep block. I do not think Arteta wants to do this. I think he could learn from the verticality of Wenger and the control of Pep and the high press of Klopp and create a tactical Frankenstein on the pitch. However he sees it and sets up his team to do it, my point is that we play to slow and that is why we have become set piece fc and are not scoring enough in open play. And no, we do not have enough firepower. We need a chaos merchant to break the control; I love Arteta, yet I wonder if we get a chaos merchant whether he would truly allow the player the license to just go - to be expressive, to make a play? Chaos should be the "offensive reinvention" and the verticality that Wenger brought with Henry and Freddie and Pires around the spine (physical and creative) that Viera, Gilberto, and Bergkamp offered is the key. We have spine players. We do not have a true chaos merchant and we do not play past the pressure with true verticality.

Gabriel jesus ball watching a lovely lofted ball from rice, havertz with 0 conviction in his shots and nowhere to be seen when saka crosses the ball into the box and finally a left WINGER who cannot interpret offsides when he can look across the defensive line….with all these points in mind, do you still expect arsenal attack to flourish??
5 yrs in, we have let an ex-feyenoord and ex-leceister manager overtake us and we still have a certain section of the fanbase thinking that arteta’s the next best thing since sliced bread.

I’m not sure how you can see this as anything other than a squad quality problem. All the other teams around us are proving it to us. Slot keeps recognizing the main reason Liverpool are doing so well is the incredible squad he’s inherited. Man City lose several key players in an already slim squad and can’t seem to win a game now. We can (and probably should) roll our eyes all we want at Chelsea’s ridiculous spending but look at where all this squad quality has them in the table. Setting injuries aside, even with a fully fit squad we still have too many players who are not at the level required for winning titles. And even in the positions we’re strongest in we have no viable options to bring on and change a game if our stars are having an off game. We’ve pushed this squad to its very limit in the past two seasons but will not be able to push much further without some serious upgrades all around the pitch.

Always fascinates me how after one indifferent result, lets not forget against a team who have been solid at home this season, and the fans go into meltdown. This could easily have been 3 or 4-1 and the narrative completely different.
Everyone is an expert and think problems can be solved like you're playing a video game when the reality is that its real! We currently have 1 fit left back (in fairness Id have played him in this game as it omly disrupts one position but at least he's playing in his natural position) and he's not played since the summer, or a midfielder who has had a couple of games there as a stand in. We have 9 defenders and currently, from what we learned yesterday, 6 of them are injured.
Clive is spot on, because of the amount of injury disruption players are having to play too many minutes.
All the so called experts in the fanbase were screaming for a striker in the summer despite having just broken our goalscoring record. It was clear the left side needed fixing and the club acted to do this in signing Calafiori and Merino and guess what they've both had injuries, you just can't legislate for that. They've played 3 games together so far.
The club looked at Sesko he decided to stay put.
There's no way Newcastle were selling Isak and even if they were the price would have made it impossible. The club were somewhat hamstrung in the summer because the players that needed moving were largely shifted at the end of the window and at that stage they aren't selling a prized asset with no time to source a replacement.
We've had to use 9 or 10 different back 4's. Odegaard was missing for 2 months, sure Nwaneri could have been used more but he's 17, has started 2 games against lower league opponents and had to come off in both because he isn't there physically yet so that clearly shows he isn’t quite ready to start in the PL.
    We've had nonsense officiating too.
But despite all this we're still maintaining a title challenge.
Some people have very short memories and forget the shit show the manager inherited and how things have been transformed since.
Only one team can win the League, judging by some people's logic 19 managers should get sacked every season!

Our best attacking team under Arteta was in the first half of 22 23 when Jesus and Zini just came in. That front 3 of in-form Martinelli Jesus Saka was the best in the league! Its maybe worth trying playing Zini Merino Martinelli all on the left and Jesus up front for a game and see how they perform.

I have to say we have been very unfortunate with injuries.
A: Gabriel injured? That's okay we have Calafiori
B: No he's injured, too bad we'll play Tomiyasu then
A: Tomiyasu? Have anyone even seen this guy lately?
B: Fine, I'm sure Timber won't mind filling in here
A: Are you kidding me? The man is already operating on a double shift, give the man a break!
B: Then who do we have left?
A: How about that Kiwior guy then?
B: You mean that guy that let Salah run past him and gave a poor pass back to the keeper in the Bournemouth game?
A: Well at least he isn't injured right?
In my opinion we can't be relying on Tomiyasu and Kiwior anymore, I've staunchly defended these two in the past but I think it's a huge liability for us now. We either get a new left back and play Calafiori as a left sided central defence, or we get another top level central defender that is street smart.

    So arsenal attacking depth -
    Saka - World Class
    Havertz - Decent
    Trossard - 30 , should be superSub
Martinelli - hasn't been good from last 18 months
Jesus - Hasnt scored a goal in league since Jan
And after seeing this , they thought signing a washed sterling will be enough . Its not even mistake at this point . Its a crime . Its taking you this long to address your attacking depth, thats on arteta or whoever responsible . Since 2 seasons before we been trying to sign attacker , either winger or striker but 2 years later , still nothing . I hope we do something in Jan , 1 attacking signing is needed no matter what the cost or availability.

Edu flew to Ivory coast to watch him play in the Afcon in January and begin preliminary talks with his agent. Edu returns to the UK and Arteta changes his mind preferring to rely on Havertz. That decision and other bizarre transfer preferences on Arteta's part led to Edu's resignation.
