Barrow or Utqiaġvik: Residents discuss changing the city's name

  • Voters approved changing the name of the city of Barrow to Utqiaġvik in October, a change which went into effect on December 1, 2016. In Alaska’s northernmost city, however, residents remain divided about whether they name should’ve changed at all, whether the process was hurried, and whether the Utqiagvik is even the proper Inupiaq place name. Several residents share their perspective on the topic. (Video by Marc Lester / Alaska Dispatch News)

    Honestly, I didn't know of this name change until now. I am always into checking the weather to see how cold or when the Sun will rise in northern places like ole Barrow, but every time I ask Cortana, Googol, or Alexa, I don't get any straight answers.

    That name for people thinking of traveling there for tourism, is too confusing. While Barrow is a small town, I would say most people in the lower 48 will know what you're talking about when you mention Barrow. The other name when looking at it, for a non-native speaker, you would have no idea how to pronounce it. In fact, it looks like a bunch of letters randomly put together that were pulled out of a hat. They can name the town whatever they like, but I'll still call it Barrow.

      When people go in different countries it makes sense that some place names may be hard to pronounce. And the Inuits are basically their own nation too, not the same as Anglo America. So what's wrong with them changing the name?

    • @TryTheBLT
      @TryTheBLT 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      But it's their business. Nobody else has the right to an opinion because it's not our business. When India changed the name of Bombay to Mumbai and China changed the name of Peking to Beijing there were also people around the world who complained. But it must be remembered that many of these place names and city names were made by British colonialists or American colonialists rather than the local peoples themselves. How would you react if a race from another planet had their own name for Earth and they complained that they now had to call it Earth because "that's just dumb". The local indigenous peoples should name their towns without white American interference or butting in of the nose.

    • @TryTheBLT
      @TryTheBLT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Brian I think you possibly confused the comments by the original poster with mine. I think this person is wrong. Every indigenous community has the right to name their cities, towns, villages, and landmarks according to their own traditions without interference by outside groups. Colonialism had some benefits, but in many cases it resulted in terror and suffering for indigenous peoples.

    • @Picklejam08
      @Picklejam08 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sokkies What you say is fine....but in some cases.....like the name change of Barrow Alaska was submitted and passed by just a small number of people. The vast vast majority of residence were apathetic and unaware of the change. Don’t get me wrong... the locals were not tricked by political activists....it’s just that most residence have little interest in local politics and pay no mind to what goes on. In that way it is easy for a small minority to change the name, when in actuality and reality the name change was not the will of the people. In fact...the name was never an issue with the great majority and Barrow was just fine with them.
