    This new series will be focusing on the maintenance and repair of Airheads. Quite a lot of this mechanical work would apply to 1981 and on airheads. This tutorial is using the former 1985 R80 RT that William converted to a 1985 R80 S variant in our last video series. In this first episode William goes through the tear down process, removing many of the mechanical components that he will be working on over this series. This is the first of many episodes in this new series as William walks you through each step of the mechanical maintenance and repairs to keep these amazing bikes on the road. Always filled with great tricks to help you with your own Airhead project. Follow along our instructional videos for working on your own BMW Airhead Classic. Learn valuable tips from William to save you both time and money on your R2V build!

    I enjoy your videos, maybe the best part is the fact that you cover the processes in detail and slowly. Indeed slowly is a speed of your work I so enjoy. Keep it going and we all learn something.

    Thanks William! I have restored several bikes, but just last year bought a last edition CS (first last edition '84). While I am sure I could figure a lot of this out, having your tips and tricks at hand in a convenient video is saving me load of time. I appreciate you taking the time to pass on this information! Keep up the good work!

    Danish thanks for your fine videos. Do all 1981-84 gearboxes have a clutch-rod with a bearing and a round disk at the rear end, as shown in this video? on my 1982 (possibly 1983) gearbox there was no disk, only a straight rod that fits into a closed unit with bearings inside. No matter how I adjust the screw on the clutch arm behind the gearbox, my clutch won't disengage completely, so I wonder if lack of disk + bearing would explain that (because the rod cannot be pushed enough forward). I am thinking of putting in a washer between the rod and the bearing unit, but that doesn't sound right either .. ugh

    Great video William, as usual, but not sure about the title ‘1981 on’. Was expecting a twin shock bike as monolevers didn’t come in till about 1986.

    • @GarthGoldberg
      @GarthGoldberg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Transmission installation/removal is the same.

    • @lesleysmith5623
      @lesleysmith5623 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GarthGoldberg I agree that removal of transmission is the same but, lots of other differences between mono and twin shock and title is still not correct. I have an '81 and a' 93.

      Good call! with only the exception of the swingarm and rear drive, not much changed and so we named it so to adrress a wider range of years, that others with 81-84 might benefit.

    Hi William. My name is Ben. I hope all is well. I am concidering replacing my tires: 1983 R65. It calls for a 3.25×18 Metzeler Rille 12 for front. Is that the same tire as a Metzeler Block C 66 3.25×18? I can get both front, and rear Block C 66, in the U.S.A. Any advice is appreciated. Sincerely, Ben
    Ps. Very professional work. As neat as aviation mechanics

    I'm having trouble getting the swingarm off because of the bolts that connect the rod to the engine. And that part is not in the clip haha. How do you untighten the 4 bolts since the entire rod tends to spin (obviously since that's how it works haha). Any tips?

  • @GarthGoldberg
    @GarthGoldberg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The clutch lever boot is FORTY BUCKS so it is better IMO to loosen the clamp and remove the boot from the transmission cover first if it is still serviceable.

    • @boxer2valve
      @boxer2valve  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct. More often than not, the boot has deteriorated and will need replacement. if you are very careful, maybe you can salvage it for another go.

    Hi guys. Can someone tell me what the crossover fuel line is for? (new to airheads here). Mine was completely disconnected when I purchased my bike (1985 R80) and it was running fine without it being there... I don't understand it's use.
    Cheers

    • @boxer2valve
      @boxer2valve  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The really cool thing about having the cross over fuel line is that it basically gives you 2 "reserves". You can run one side of the tank almost dry by feeding both carbs with the cross over line and then when that is finished you still have the other side of the tank to go on reserve. Then you know you better get some fuel pretty soon.

    Will the older style airbox fit on this engine? If so I hope you use one.

    • @GarthGoldberg
      @GarthGoldberg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's possible, but you have to change the crankcase breather, etc. Not worth the trouble since the later style actually breathes better.

    • @boxer2valve
      @boxer2valve  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would not really fit I think. The issue starts with the timing cover and how it would not align with the starter cover. I don't think that the parts are compatible. Never really tried though so I will have a look. Thanks for the input!

    • @boxer2valve
      @boxer2valve  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what is needed and whether you do it yourself of you pay someone. Impossible to say.

  • @assessor1276
    @assessor1276 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Something is funny here - the title says that this is the first in a series on an ‘81 bike - but it is actually the continuation of the ‘85 R80RT >> S project.
    Anyhow, your tutorials are so well done William - BUT - could you please-please-please ask your camera person to focus in on where your hands are doing the actual work?
    When you were removing the rear brake pivot and the swing arm bolts - all we could see was an overall rear view of,the bike - but your hands were completely invisible (which means that that portion of the video had no value whatsoever).

    • @boxer2valve
      @boxer2valve  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most all of the work that we did would be the same on an 1981 and later bike. That's why we named it so. I've had a serious talk with my cameraman and he promises to do better!
