  • The Positive Grid Spark 40 Amplifier has 5 different compressors built right in. 4 of them are dedicated to guitars. In this video, I look at the different compressors in the Spark Amp and go through their different functions. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

Sustain Comp - based on the Boss CS-3
The CS-3 Compression Sustainer pedal compresses louder signals while boosting lower signals, providing smooth sustain without degrading the original sound quality. This is the perfect pedal for guitarists and bassists who want to sound their best.

Paul, You probably won’t read this but you are by far the best tutor on TH-cam about the Spark40. Positive Grid should pay you for these instructional videos about their products! I’ve learned so much from you mate about my Spark amp! Thank you!…….I have a question. I set up my compressor in the amp with the same settings as you have. If my pickups are ‘hotter’ than the ones your using in the video will I need to dial back my compressor settings?…..Hope you can answer! Thanks again and best wishes! 👍👍👏👏

Another great video, short and sweet to the point! Now I have a better understanding of the compressor offered in the Spark. Thanks Paul!

Nice man! I was looking for a more in depth review of these pedal options. I don't know too much about compressors and I was messing with them today in fact and this is perfect!

Optical Comp - BBE Opto Stomp
The BBE Opto Stomp Optical Compressor serves up vintage-voiced compression in a tanky, durable metal enclosure with a simple interface of two knobs for threshold and output. Designed to add a nice bite to your existing tone while remaining transparent so as to retain the clarity of your rig, this stompbox's basis in "soft-knee" compression makes it an ideal candidate not only for guitar, but bass, keys, and acoustic instruments with a pickup.

I loved the Spark, but I ended up returning mine and bought the Mustang GTX 50 instead. It’s $80 more and a bigger size, but I like being able to put any pedal in any position in the chain, rather than being limited to only putting delay/reverb after the amp, etc. I also like that the Mustang has both amp and cabinet options, way more amps and pedals than the Spark, and a footswitch input, for use with a wah, effects pedal, or the GTX-7 footswitch for looping and quicker switching of individual pedals on/off. I also like the display on the amp itself so that it’s less dependent on the phone app for changing pedals than the Spark, and the XLR output option is great. Not to mention the extra 10 watts, and 12” celestion speaker in the Mustang has way clearer low tone distortion sounds than the 4” speakers in the Spark. The Spark is great, but for the extra $80, the Mustang GTX just gave me way more flexibility options.

What is it you’re playing from 1:42 to 1:44. It’s driving me nuts. I can’t remember the name of that song.
