@@MuhammadAli-qh8tg there used to be some awesome sources from Japan for super rare Metal Gear material, back then it was trickier to obtain such stuff, but it was a really fun process.
To this day, the '98 release of MGS stands as one of the select few times a video game was an emotional experience for me. The setting of Shadow Moses was such a fitting microcosm for the world these characters lived in: the cold, the dark, the isolation. Some of them reconcile who and what they were, some of them condemn themselves. By the ending of the game, there is relief and reassurance in seeing that the sun is rising. Having followed Metal Gear since the 8 bit era, this game was a real homecoming.
It embodies what Kojima saw back in 1981 when he saw Escape From New York which is what inspired Snake. I remember playing this and asking myself would a video game ever be this much of a emotional experience for me? Twenty years later I feel the game prepared the world for the fall out of the Cold War. Genetic testing for the ultimate soldier and at the same time forgetting those men who had given so much. We saw the end result of post 9-11 with the paranoia and so many left with their own demons to haunt them. I think that’s what made it so relatable was Snake was a representation of all this. The message Kojima gives through Dr. Hunter to Snake at the end of the game about not choosing ones fate based on genetics or the planned out future to to embrace the unknown rather than fear it. I always felt “Fox Die” program was a symbolism of the fear we all felt towards the end of the last century with Y2K, the environment and eventually coming to a pandemic that may have been linked to viral research thus shutting down the global economy , a rigged presidential election with aide from another country, and the United States having its first major insurgence in American history. It’s as if Kojima wanted us to have a glimpse into a plausible future and yet aspire to live for more than just survival which is what we seem to be doing these days. Just surviving and the world telling us “the bear has yet to come......”
"Solid Snake : Fox, why? What do you want from me? Gray Fox : I'm a prisoner of Death. Only you can free me... Solid Snake : Fox, stay out of this... What about Naomi? She's hell bent on taking revenge for you. Gray Fox : Naomi... Solid Snake : You're the only one that can stop her. Gray Fox : No... I can't. Solid Snake : Why? Gray Fox : Because I'm the one who killed her parents. I was young then and couldn't bring myself to kill her too. I felt so bad that I decided to take her with me. I raised her like she was my own blood to soothe my guilty conscience. Even now she thinks of me as her brother... Solid Snake : Fox... Gray Fox : From the outside, we might have seemed like a happy brother and sister. But every time I looked at her, I saw her parents' eyes staring back at me... Tell her for me. Tell her that I was the one who did it."
I genuinely cried at this part, this and at the death of Sniper wolf. I remember the feeling of having to pull the final trigger and both. "No, I can't do it." I remember having to press the button prompt but I just couldn't, I knew I had to, but I couldn't. I finally pulled enough moral justification to pull the trigger. I closed my eyes and hit fire but I heard snake himself say he was unable to do it. At that point he was I and I was he. Such a powerful moment no game since has ever come close to. As a game it does need a remake to stand up to what we have today but as a story, we remember metal gear as the best game ever because of the emotions it gave us before many of us had even left school. Metal gear was the game that made me want to become a writer and now, over 20 years later I'm finally writing a book on wattpad fulfilling a dream a simple game gave me.
SNAKE: Naomi, please talk to me. Say something to take my mind off the pain. NAOMI: What can I say? SNAKE: Anything. NAOMI: I... I'm not a very good talker. SNAKE: Please. Tell me about yourself. NAOMI: Where is he? SNAKE: Dead, by my own hand. CAMPBELL: Big Boss! NAOMI: What?! Big Boss? I had no idea! CAMPBELL: There was no way you could. It happened in Zanzibar 6 years ago. Only Snake and I know the real truth of what happened there. NAOMI: So is it true? Was Big Boss really your father? SNAKE: That's what he said, that's all I know. NAOMI: And you were able to kill him? Knowing that? SNAKE: Yup NAOMI: How? SNAKE: He wanted it. Besides, some people just need killing. NAOMI: That's patricide! SNAKE: Yup. That's the trauma that Mantis was talking about. The one we share in common. NAOMI: Is that why you left FOXHOUND? SNAKE: Let's just say that I needed to be alone for a while and Alaska was the perfect place.
Solid Snake: "And he brought you back to America." Naomi: "No, I was in Mozambique when "he" came." Solid Snake: "... Who is 'he'?" Solid Snake: "...You mean Big Boss?" Naomi: "Yes. He brought us to this 'land of freedom', this America. But then he and my brother went back to Africa to continue the war. And that's when it happened... You killed my benefactor and sent my brother home a cripple. I vowed revenge and joined FOXHOUND. I knew it was my best chance to meet you and I prayed for the day that I would..." Solid Snake: "So.. were your prayers answered?"
Absolutely beautiful. Love it when they use the instrumental of this song during the conversation between Snake and Naomi in the prison cell, when they're discussing about how Snake killed his father, Big Boss. "Some people just need killing". This instrumental in the background....still gives me chills.
"I...i can still help! I want to help you!" "Quiet down, save your strength!" "I was a fool...i wanted to be a soldier.....but war is ugly...there is nothing glamorous about it...Snake, please, save yourself! Go on living, and dont give up on people! Don't forget me..." "My rifle...give it to me...it's the part of me. Okay, hero. Finish me off." "Snake...you said love can bloom on the battlefield. But i couldh't protect her...What are you doing?" "Returning it to the owner. I don't need the handkerchief" "Why?" "I don't have any tears to shed" "Snake! What was she fighting for!? What am i fighting for!? What are you fighting for...!?" "If we get through this, i'll tell you!" When i first played MGS1, i was amazed. It was a first masterpiece that i ever played, i really concidered it to be the best game i ever played. Concidering as young as i was, and how many time passed, i really looked at Snake as a hero, some kind of action-movie style hero, clean positive. And it seemed only right that he got a posse - Meryl was that kind of woman you'd want to have around. But real world isn't about happy endings... And all the way scenario went to MGS 4 just projects that. I just wanted to thank Kojima and a fainthful KONAMI team that went and did this masterpiece series.
