I’m a professional photog and used my XT-4 for the first time last night. I feel like I’ve taken a major step down in quality from the canon 5d. Hopefully the out of the box settings are just badly chosen by the company and I can fix this. Feels like instead of a fuji I just bought an iphone 6 camera.

No not the best aps-c, the x-trans array sucks for fine detail. Even fuji must be admitting it because they use bayer sensors in their medium format cams. If they ditch x-trans, i would buy fuji without hesitating.

Great review, Gordon. Thank you for sharing. I have an X-T4 and I agree with everything you said. I upgraded from an X-T3 not for the video features but for IBIS with photography and for the better battery. From my limited testing, I'm very impressed with it. I took a photo of the street from my balcony at just after midnight - handheld at f/2, 1/10, ISO 3200 - and it was sharp. I tried the same without IBIS and, well... it wasn't. Makes sense but it's the first time I've used IBIS so it was exciting. I can't wait to get out there properly and do some street photography.
    Thanks again, Gordon. Take care.

Owning Sony A7sii, Nikon d750 and Canon 5dmk4 over the years finally dove into Fujifilm. My xt4 arrived a few days ago and I can't say enough good things about it. I was able to figure out the menus and controls within seconds. Its by far the easiest camera I've ever had to master. I'm not sure I can ever go back to a camera without all the dedicated knobs!

APS-C cameras like these makes you think twice before investing in micro 4/3.
If a person has no cameras at all, hasn't invested into any system, I feel Aps-c is the sweet spot. And the XT-4 is the perfect APS-C.
Now, Fuji if you would release a few cheap f1.8 lenses.

I'm looking for a completely new system (my current APS-C Nikon camera and lenses are old and entry models).
For me the X-T4 is just too expensive, also the Fuji lenses are very high priced.
So - in my case - it makes more sense to go for a Nikon Z6 or Sony A7 III, roughly the same price and also weight but Full Frame (affordable and very good F2.8 Tamron zoom lenses) and better grip for all-day outdoors.
Even though the X-T4 is a very good camera for sure, 20 % lower price and I would consider it ...

I think you're right. I'm still rocking an EM-1 with some pro lenses, and more recently an A7iii and A9. This XT-4 is a really powerful and lovely looking camera though, I think if I were starting afresh I would be looking carefully at the XT-4.

Lovely review, Gordon. I really love my X-T4----so much I'm yet to take advantage of. Only shooting video, I don't miss full frame at all except for the convenience. My metabones FD to X mount speed booster gives me full frame and extra light when and if I need it--and PLENTY of bokeh. And love the new batteries and battery charger---worth the money, for sure.
Now, I have small hands----and while the X-T4 is comfortable to hold, especially using the battery grip, I will be more excited to hear about the debut of X-H2. If it came out I'd buy it today...or even yesterday---if I could. Both had, for me, something as a video shooter I find indispensable: Cinema 4k. No cinema 4K--no purchase.
I note you omitted remarking about using non-electronic lenses---that's all I shoot with. I have a set of X mount Rokinon's that are wonderful to use. And the focus peaking is the best in the business, hand's down. Combined with the ability to move the focus box and punch in ANYTIME and refocus makes the T4 a video MF shooter's dream. No one mentions this feature, but, IMO, for video and manual focus shooting it's Fuji's jewel in the crown. Using it I NEVER miss a focus pull or have to re-do a focus pull because I missed critical focus. Every camera that aspires to attract video shooters should have this feature.
I loved the X-H1, image was beautiful, and body remains, IMO, unsurpassed. If it had better batteries I'd buy it again today.
Alas, the X-H1 does lack the X-T4's new Vampire simulation.
    :-(
Fortunately, not a deal breaker for me.
    ;-)

A limitation of the XT3 and the fuji X series, is the remote camera app when recording video. Wai Lam did a thorough review on the Fuji Remote Camera App, pointing to these shortcomings that make it unusable for video control (no ability to focus, freezing of the image), that make it difficult to use for instance when self-recording and trying to set the focus. I suppose they haven't updated the app for the XT4. The GH5 app, comparatively, is very complete and useful. Thank you for your review.

As an XT3 owner I think this is a very minor upgrade, IBIS is definitely good but not a must, specially if you r using a stabilized lens, the bigger battery of course was a so much needed change, these are the 2 things for me yet not enough reasons to upgrade from the X-T3.

And the argument "I don't need it" is not valid, because I can always switch it off in my camera. For me, this addition alone makes the Fuji system much more appealing. And I'm sure not only for me.

Hi, Gordon: As always, your reviews are some of the best in the business! My main concern about the XT4, despite it's high level of functioning, has to do with the massive and inexpensive line of generic lenses (Sigma, et al) that are made for my Sony A6600. I also love the very small travel size of the A6600 that is so easy to carry when I shoot all day (while traveling). Thanks again, and thanks to Fuji for pushing all camera manufacturers.

Thank you for the excellent review. I changed from Nikon (D810) to an X-T2 and added an X-T3. I like much about the Fuji system but Lightroom just does not handle the raw files well. (I saw some comments below but can't find them again.) I have taken about 50,000 photos with the cameras and notice the issue, especially at higher ISO values. Yesterday I did a test by saving both the jpg and raw files and importing them into the latest version of LR. The SOOC jpg file clearly had many fewer "worms" than the raw file (at a 4:1 view). Part of my photography hobby is capturing birds, and I find that I often lose fine details, even after following various sharpening routines. I have tried Iridient and Capture 1. And even considered going back to Nikon. Any suggestions?

    Hi Gordon,
I really loved this review, super detailed.
I'm looking for a camera that's good for still, but furthermore can do 4K 60fps, and this seems to tick all the boxes.
    Here are my requirements:
-4K 60fps, mic jack input (this has USB-C)
-Good AF, and don't want to be fiddling with manual adjustments on the lens
    -Sub £2k with everything
-Easy enough to use for a novice - I'm no pro like yourself or most who would be getting this camera
I'm currently using a Sony RX100 MK1 (yes old school), for all my videos on TH-cam and still on my website. It's good, but really want to step it up a level.
Would you suggest this camera over say the Panasonic Lumix DC-S5; or any other camera you can think of that will fulfil my requirements? If so, which lens kit would you suggest.
Oh, and if I disable IBIS - would I still get the choppy effect you mentioned when panning - as that's important for me for B-roll footage?
Thank you so much in advance!

The major drawback for video in the XT3 is that it stutters (creates irregular movement) when doing a panning, even on a fluid head tripod, and most of the time that ruins the shot, when working on a gimbal or when panning, and that comes from the sensor or the processing, which haven't changed much in the XT4. I see at 16:11 some slow and short panning movements, and when you look at it, there is some stutter, even if there are good conditions (slow movement, relatively distant subject), which makes me fear that the issue persists and that makes it unusable for me while moving the camera.

Hi Gordon, i m in a deep research to buy a camera for a long time, i have a question ; X-T4 is 26MP and X-A7 is 24 MP, lets not see that 2MP resulation difference which does not make any change in my case i guess , these 2 cameras have Aps-C sensors and same (nearly) resulation, so shouldnt they see same level of detail in dark scenes? All other features like Native ISO and Processor Speed etc. make the X-T4 see better in dark? That is why X-T4 multiplies the price of X-A7? Thats a technical and kinda logical question for me becuase they have the same pixel size (nearly) which is the real case to collect light. So to see better in dark scenes, where real price difference goes to?

Greetings Mr. Laing. What an incredible comprehensive review on the XT4. Just coming off from a Nikon system, I've decided to go Fuji as my next set of photography gear but for hobbyist purposes only. May I inquire as to your recommendation, XT4 vs XPro3, given that:
    1. I'm not a Vlogger (Or at least I haven't delved into the hobby yet) and planning to use the cam for general stills/documentary photography (portraits, famil, street, food, travel)
    2. LCD construction issues (of which I've always heard from reviewers that the tilting screen would be more ideal for Still photogs)
    3. Taking into consideration the XT4's:
    a. Improved AF
    b. IBIS
    c. 300K rated shutter actuation
    d. Longer Battery Life
*Are these features worth sacrificing for the non-conspicuous LCD construction of the XPro3?
    4. Durability/Toughness? (Or is Xpro3 tougher?)
    5. Also What do u think of the XT3/X100v combo (Since it seems that their LCD tilt screen are more inclined for still photographers)?
Thank you, Gordon for your efforts on making fuji gear reviews through these years.

    • @Muchtoobizy
      @Muchtoobizy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I own several Fuji bodies and I think as a stills shooter the X-T3 / X100V is a brilliant combo. The X-T3 is lighter than the X-T4 and it is such a well refined, balanced camera. I prefer the screen of the X-T3 that tilts horizontally and vertically. If you are a street photographer, that mechanism is brilliant and discreet. For a stills shooter, I'd say the X-T4 is all about how much you need IBIS. The AF and battery life of the X-T3 are fine for me as a hobbyist.
The X-Pro 3 is a beautiful product - but its not for everyone. Only you know to what extent you can live without an LCD that is visible at all times. It encourages you to stay away from menus and options and focus on creating images. Try it before you buy it unless you live in a country that accepts no-question returns. The X-T3 is a safer purchase.
Good luck choosing. There is obviously a learning curve when moving to a Fuji camera from another brand, but its worth the effort.

    • @nathanielngosy
      @nathanielngosy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Muchtoobizy Hi! Thanks for the advice. I think IBIS will be very useful for low light/night photography. On another note, here where I live the XT4 is on pre-order promo with warranty extended from one year to two and a free battery. Hence, I'm very much tempted already. If only the XT3 has a promo as well.
*Do you own an X100v, sir? If so, how its supposed overheating issues? Its latest firmware causes the system to switch off automatically when the body reaches a certain high temperature.
*I'm also curious whether to invest on zooms (I'm having 2nd thoughts because of their weight and on that note, they may just end up in my dehumidifier box)? I'm inclined to those mid-range with WR lenses so it's either the 16-80/4.0 or the 16-55/2.8. Both of which are currently sold with substantial discounts with the former as a bundle with the XT4 and the latter as a standalone unit.
*As for the XPro3. I'm considering it due to its durability (somehow, having read reviews of the XPro line, that seems warranted). It's because my next photo gear purchase would be considered as a long-term investment (at least it will stay with me for 10 years and even beyond). Hence, the XT4 may come short compared to the XPro3 in terms of toughness as some say that the latter's more likely built like a tank. Unfortunately, there's no way I'll be able to test an XPro3 anytime soon due to quarantine restrictions.

    • @cameralabs

As you know from my review of it, I really liked the X100V - it really inspired me to shoot. I still also love the XT3 for its size, so if I had stabilised lenses or shorter unstabilised primes, then I think I could be happy with it. If you're not into video or vlogging, then the screens on the X100V, XT3 and X-Pro would also be fine, so I think a lot will boil down t which body style most calls out to you and inspires you to shoot. Whichever one you get, if you order online, please do consider using my price check links here or at cameralabs.com thanks!

@@cameralabs Sir, thank you for your recommendations. Will seriously consider what you mentioned here in your comment to my inquiries. Unfortunately, sir, I live in Southeast Asia so I would be purchasing the fuji gear here locally.
*By the way, how's the overheating issue with the X100v (Watched your review about it already)? It seemed quite an escalating concern that Fuji even released a firmware update just to suppress the problem (by switching the camera off if it heats up within the body to a certain level: www.fujirumors.com/new-firmware-updates-for-fujifilm-x100v-overheating-managment-and-x-a7-released/ )
*Unfortunately, there's a little chance I could ever get to try out an XPro3 since our country is also in community quarantine. But the XPro3 seems to be more durable and does make you want to shoot more (Watched your review on it as well). However, the XT4 is more versatile with ease of functionality. So it's really hard to decide which unit's for me.

@@nathanielngosy I think the online camera forums are better for these lengthy discussions and you will get many more opinions than just mine.
X100V - Yes I have one, its amazing - the new lens is so sharp. It does get hot even with stills shooting. I also have had overheating issues with X-T* cameras in very hot weather (tropics), if I am using them constantly. I occasionally get a warning on screen and switch the camera off to let it cool.
I own the 18-55 f2.8-4 zoom and I like it because its so light. But I don't use it much. For me, the Fuji APSC system is about small, light cameras with outstanding prime lenses.
There are good discounts available on the X-T3 now, which makes it incredible value. If you haven't guessed already; I really do like the X-T3 - the weight and the way it feels in the hand; the reach of the buttons and dials, the way the LCD tilts, is perfect for me.
I don't know if Fuji's XPro line is more durable than the X-T* series. I find the latter to be excellent in build quality; they've never been a problem for me.
I would say any of these cameras will last you ten years if you take care of them. The bigger problem is whether you can resist camera lust. I have a Sigma Foveon camera that is 14 years old that I still use.
I am not someone who whines about camera specs. I will buy one after some research and simply learn to love the things it excels at, together with its flaws. With lenses; I look for character over lens chart performance. (The 1.4 Fuji lenses are superb and my main reason for using Fuji).
Please switch to the Fuji forums for more help. You are making a serious purchase, so ask several opinions.

My Olympus cameras have focus peaking and is really fun to use. It's like ants racing around on the image screen. There is no doubt about what's in focus. I read somewhere this is one of the advantages of mirrorless cameras over dslrs. The focus of the mirrorless cameras is based upon how focused the image is on the sensor that's going to take the photograph. The focus on the DSLR cameras is based upon how a lens is focused to a separate sensor above the mirror.
