  • That's right - physicality on defense and hand-checking are back in the NBA. Adam Silver decided offenses were way overpowered and decided to instruct the referees to not call fouls anymore after the All-Star break. In this video, BasketNews' Augustas Suliauskas analyzes how FIBA-like rules are affecting NBA players & why it is actually great for the league and the players themselves.

      Love the new changes. It will make games more competitive. Since some players are being drafted from Europe and some American players end up in Europe, it would be nice to see NBA and EuroLeague closer resemble each other in terms of rules and officiating. This move by the NBA means they have moved on from the Steph Curry era and I'm glad to see that. Heck, if these changes didn't happen we would have eventually witnessed women like Caitlin Clark and Sabrina Ionescu compete and dominate in the NBA 😅. That would have been the final nail in the coffin to bring down the NBA altogether. I'm glad Adam Silver saw the writing on the wall and made the necessary changes.

    It's absolutely a good thing. Games are much more interesting when they're closer and allowing a physical game lets the game remain closer for longer. Everyone assumes higher scoring = more exciting, but if a big chunk of the scoring comes from free throws and all the scoring leads to a 20+ point game in the 3rd quarter...it's just not good for fan interest or engagement. Let them play the game the way it was intended instead of from a standstill at a line on the floor.

    • @Smido83
      @Smido83 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be fair... FTA were never the real problem. The lowest FTA per game seasons were ALL after 2010. All of them!
      As a comparison. In MJ's time the average FTA per season were between 27 and 30 FTA per game... In the 2020's its about 22-23. Same was true for fouls overall. 25 fouls per game in the 80's, 22.5 in the 90's, 19.7 so far in the 2020's
      The problem was allways the missing physicality. Now offenses have to adjust and either play through contact, or (like back in the day), force defenses to actually foul you to get to the line.

    Yeah for the basketball world bringing back defense is great, however, the reason NBA allowed massive amounts of scoring is because since MJ, the NBA audience have dwindled and today it seems only the basketball world watches basketball. So NBA thought we need more "MJ"s (basically more scoring) to attract more audience. Even with Lebron being GOAT status has not expanded the audience past those who ususally watch basketball. Hence the ridiculous amount of scoring which annoyed the basketball world but it didnt attract more audience . The only reason media companies like Disney (via ESPN) and CBS (via Paramount) dump tons of cash on NBA and other sports is because they are losing out to the streaming media companies like Netflix, so the only cash cow revenue they can get is "live entertainment" ie sports. But NBA getting tons of money is not indication that the audience has expanded, it is result of internal media industry problems.

      yeah I took a lot of Brunson clips but overall he's fine - playing at the same level, it's just that a lot the examples were the most clear from him. not a knock on him though, has been playing awesome the whole season, with or without getting calls

    It’s about time it’s not a foul to breathe on a guy. I vividly remember Westbrook going up for a 3, kicking the defender on purpose, and being given 3 free throws

    This is the best thing that could happen as all these cheap fouls were my main complaint (yes even worse than the travels). There was nothing wrong with the rules, the main problem was they were not being enforced. Now finally most of them are. On to a fantastic playoffs season!

    As an NBA fan from the late 80s, 90s and early 2000s I found damn near every example you showed, to me were not fouls. Maybe that's why I haven't watched since the mid 2000s, also maybe the traveling no calls, oh and maybe the carrying no calls. Lol

    Offensive fouls should have the same sensitivity as defensive fouls.
    Fouls in the act of shooting I think should exclude those where the arms pump for the shot after the foul is committed. Call the foul, but no and 1 or fts.

    Yanis runs into players regularly. The issue isn't fixed by not calling fouls. The refs should call the proper foul. Yanis for example should be called for charging at least 10 times per game. Which would eliminate him from playing the rest of the game. Just call the charge. Too easy.

    Honestly, I think it's bad practice to change the way rules are enforced without notifying the players and coaches. After all, a game is defined by the rules it enforces. The NBA has consistently struggled with inconsistent foul calling due to their negligence when defining boundaries for fouls.

    I love the changes. I say this as a Mavs fan with Luka who definitely tries to draw contact a lot. The game is less fun to watch when we have to stop every minute to watch a guy shoot free throws. It's kind of insufferable to watch the ball handler intentionally shoulder into a defender that's nowhere near them and flop around. I'd rather see players try to make the darn shot.
