Pre-Departure Boat Projects - Part 1 | Sailboat Story 14

  • There's a huge list of boat projects that we must finish before we can launch our Endeavour 32 sailboat!
    Kick back and relax - this is a long video. So long in fact, that we're dividing it into 2 parts.
    We spend a total of 10 days back in Mayo, MD getting the boat ready to sail away. This video shows the first 5 days of that trip.
    That's right folks, we're boat owners! Wow, it feels nuts just to be typing that out right now, but the dream has finally become a reality.
    We own a 1979 Endeavour 32! We named it... well, you'll have to wait to find out the name.
    Now, it's time to roll up our sleeves and get down to business. Sanding, cleaning, painting, prepping, polishing, waxing, and in other words... preparing for departure.
    Thanks for watching!!

    "Pulling the fuel tank out is not nearly as much fun as it sounds." I laughed and laughed when hearing that. And when you had mentioned using wall paint for the bottom I shook my head. Believe it, people have done such things. You really got me with that one. Your humor is top notch. I see a wonderful family. Capt Molly is precious.

    You guys are doing a great job. On the tanks, You have done better than you possibly know by pulling and cleaning them. Dirty tanks have ruined more than one engine. I do not know anything about the tank liner but as Joe Surfer said below, have that one tank welded or replace it. Also while you are working in there make sure your fuel filters are located where you can check them often and easily. I wish you all many happy days upon your boat.

    Watch/subscribe to a lot of sailing channels. You are my favorite because you keep it real, are funny as shit and more importantly your love for your wife and her "respect" for your insanity means this is the real deal. I figure we put in a solid 100-120 hours of work over the course of that 10 day trip to Maryland. Double that if you count mine and Tambi's time independently. My back still aches - the pain didn't catch up with me until the trip back home, but Tambi and I are both in recovery mode now from all the work we put in, in such a short span of time.
      I think she's darn-near ready to go, but there's still lot's of little things that we'll continue to work on along the way. We appreciate the good wishes!

    Great job guys! thats a lot of work , My 2 cents on your tanks the boat is fiberglass and no holes in it so if you glass the tanks then no leaks just putting a few layers of matt over them then you wont have to worry. Aluminum is bad for corroding the other tank will leak soon also. course best to make new fiberglass tanks, around $130.00 for 5 gallons resin.

    • @Sailboatstory

    As a recommendation....I'd still get that pin hole on the leaking fuel tank welded......just one opinion.

    • @Sailboatstory
      @Sailboatstory  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A good idea, however the tanks are now treated inside and out and also re-installed at this point.
      My thinking on the matter was that if there was 1 pin hole, there were probably other areas that could also be getting thin. Im my mind it made more sense to do the full interior treatment instead of an isolated welding job.

    • @DesertSquid
      @DesertSquid 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I knew I was a say late and a dollar short from the get-go. I am just more of a fan of a mechanical bond vs a chemical bond. Fingers crossed that it works well for the long run.

      @Sailboatstory  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm with you. Ideally, I'd really prefer to pull them both and install a larger, single plastic tank - but with our budget being what it is, it felt like a good compromise to seal them up and get on the water.

    If your fuel tanks are still out, I would recommend visiting "The Rust Store" online and pick up some Citrisurf 77 or similar stainless steel rust removal/repassivation liquid. Will remove ANY free iron /rust even if it is not visible to the eye and will repassivate or pickle the stainless to recreate the protective layer.

      @Sailboatstory  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's taken us right at 1 year to go from regular old homeowners with jobs to sailors (kinda) with a sailboat.
      That timeline can be shortened up further if you are renting a place to live and can get out easily, or you're located in an area that is close to the water with lot's of sailboats around.
      We had neither of those advantages, so it took us a bit longer than what we really wanted.

    • @jpardee208

      2 years is the plan. We are located in Michigan right now. If we don't find a boat here we will find one down south. Exciting times and we are looking forward to traveling the world! I own a business so now I am in the process of setting it up so I can walk away and still be able to have the income. To us, sailing/cruising is a lifestyle that we are both seeking in order to change our day to day routine and to get out of the rat race America has become...
      We actually made a purchase of a 40ft pearson this summer but backed out due to the broker leading us a different direction. I didn't "love the boat" anyway, so it was best that we wait until we find the right one!

    • @Sailboatstory

      We did a ton of looking in Florida for a sailboat. Very generally speaking, there's a very noticeable difference between the Southern and the Northern boats. The E32 we got spent the vast majority of it's life as a great lakes boat - we think that's a huge part as to why it's been so well preserved. That, and of course, the maintenance it's received from the prior owner.
      I too am a business owner - a house flipper. We actually closed a house while away on the trip while we were filming this video. It does take some set up, some forethought, and some objective planning on how to set up a "virtual" business, but it can be done, and I think it's highly complimentary to the cruising lifestyle.
      Good on you guys for your plans.
      Keep in touch and let us know anything we can do to help you along the way.

    My last boat was a Endeavour 40 center cockpit. Right after purchasing her, I found the 70 g fuel tank to have a leak. The tank resides under the engine in the bilge, so salt water sits there and crevice corrosion happens. Florida marine tanks made the original Endeavour tanks, and are still in business today. I tried first to seal them using marine tex epoxy, and to seal them inside, but in the end decided to just have new tanks made. Aluminum tanks have a finite life span. Best to replace if you can.

      I agree that a plastic tank is best.
      Our repair has been holding up well though. No leaks!

    Very entertaining video's...The Endevours have very few flaws but the fuel tanks are the biggest! You might go ahead and install port openings on them for future cleaning! Also the endeavour owners website is a wealth of information. (i have a 40' endeavour) That folding prop will help push your boat too, these guys are heavy!

      You probably did. It's been all over the place. Up and down the East Coast at least twice (soon to the a 3rd time), and also up in Nova Scotia. Spent most of it's life up North, in fact, I believe the Federal Registration for the boat was for Erie, PA.

    Hope you have good luck with that tank seal I never could get it to work. I welded the hole and coated the tank with some stuff the airboats use to coat their boat bottoms with and that was that for my gas tank. Diesel is a pain in the butt.

    • @Sailboatstory
      @Sailboatstory  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know, I know. I do think we'll be missing it, unfortunately. It is by choice though. I'm feeling a little pressure with the seasons changing and not wanting to be stuck in the cold. I know we could tough it out, leave a bit later, and still probably end up being alright, but still feeling like playing at safer and going ahead and making some good progress South. Those are my thoughts anyways.

    Hi there, congratulations for the boat. Meg's Ultimate compound is a heavy grain polish with fillers that unforunately hides more than it restotes. The 3m is a lighter polish that needs more work (and probably a power polisher) to show its best. But without fillers what you see is what you get. Meg"s UC fillers are not durable at all, especialy in contact with water. Unfortunately...

    • @Sailboatstory
      @Sailboatstory  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow. You know a lot about polish.
      We've still got them both, plus 2 little tubs of wax.
      Maybe we'll be waxing and polishing with the dinghy alongside next time.
      When the Meguires looks bad in a month, I'll give you credit for knowing your stuff. :)

    The white rudder is cute but unless that is white bottom paint then you're going to have a problem with keeping it free of growth. I'd also be very leery of reinstalling a metal tank that has degraded to the point of leaking. Probably better to just replace with a plastic tank of similar dimensions. Fairwinds!

    • @Sailboatstory
      @Sailboatstory  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's ablative paint. White to dissipate heat better, or so I've been told anyways.
