That's honestly my least favorite song of theirs because it's shoving evolution nonsense down our throats and presenting it as if it's actual science. As a science teacher of many years, I find that highly offensive, because it's one of the dumbest theories ever proposed by man. It's not even a good theory, much less actual science. It's not observable, testable, measurable, or repeatable, all the things needed for actual science. The song itself is catchy and impressively written, but also sheer propaganda. Hence, why it happens to be my least favorite song of theirs.

You’ll need a few listens through some songs to fully get them but once you do it’s the best thing you’ll ever hear.

Yes. Beautifully said. Ghost River (specifically this version) is in my top 5 favorite songs of all time, period. Just hits me every time -- especially the "Beautifully shy..." part. Profound song.
In-teh-rest-ting!! At the risk of being shot down ..... I see it the other way around. Although Marko is the "gruffer" voice, he is warning people about the river's dangers. Whereas Floor is trying to entice the children to swim (and drown).

I love the use of the river as a metaphor for our journey through life in this song. We all travel the same direction down stream, but each of us had different experiences on the way.
Or, you know how Tuomas writes in a very metaphorical and allegorical style, the Ghost River is the river of life and you leave your mark on it, footprints on the islands, you make some good decisions illustrated by Floor and some bad ones, illustrated by Marko. Of course the river will take your only child, that's life, we're all going to die sometime, guaranteed. "We're all going to die and that makes us the lucky ones, most people are never going to die because they're never going to be born. . . ." You'll get to that in time 🙂 Tuomas never explains what was in his mind, he says his art is like a painting, you see what you personally perceive in it, he used the example that if you could debrief Leonardo da Vinci about the Mona Lisa, then the interest and intrigue would be lost.
For me, the river is the road of life, full of meanders, which finally flows into the sea. The "children" are us, under the permanent influence of the antagonistic duality on the one hand of traps and dangers, principles embodied by Marco, and on the other hand of Floor, who urges us to experiment and dare to explore despite these dangers, to have a fulfilled life. Many of the lyrics composed by Tuomas are metaphorical, leaving room for interpretation by the listeners. For me, the proof that you have become fans of the band is that you are already exploring on your own. 🤘
It's so nice to watch two genuine people who really enjoy music and have fallen head over heels to Nightwish as most us have done. One thing you must add to your bucket ls is to one day watch Nightwish live. After being introduced to NW four years ago i made it my life's wish........Last year June, with my wife, We flew 13 000 km (8 000 Miles) to Gelsenkirchen Germany to go watch them live. What an experience. My wife cried when Floor sang "Decades In The Sun" with Troy on stage......keep up the good reactions coming 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Why is Mrs Jansen so unique ????? She's on stage since 1997 with her first band After Forever when she was 16 She's a soprano with 4 octaves and can easily go to a deep growl Her vocal range is ridiculous......she can sing all what you want....in any genre Take the time to discover the Godess with Nightwish And though her own stuffs You'll never be dissapoint
Your NW journey is at the very beginning. Then there is Floor's solo career starting during COVID and up to present day. Then there is so much more of her in guest spots with other bands and with her two earlier Dutch metal bands. "After Forever" 1997-2009 and "Revamp" 2009-2016. By far her most accomplished and lauded history probably began in 2012 when she joined NW as an emergency stand in singer, when Annette got sick in mid-tour. Floor and Nightwish were made for each other. So that is when Floor was truly "discovered" by the majority of today's current NW fans. She was known long before that in European metal circles.
Mrs. Coach, just a FYI that Ann's channel is still there. Check out the gargantuan amount of Floor videos (184) she amassed. She also had quite a few Ayreon ones (even After Forever), which shows that she really was a connaisseur of top level melodic metal. In due time, your journey will lead you to that Ayreon Universe where all the greats from different bands assemble for an amazing flight. You'll recognize the name once you get there. Until then.. A regular in Ayreon is the Dutch godmother of "smile metal" (or happy metal for want of a better term), the one & only Anneke van Giersbergen. She was THE inspiration for 15yr old Floor and the one who gave Floor the idea that it was possible for a female to front a rock/metal band. You'll remember that name as well, if only for the near-unpronounceability of it for most Americans ;) Cheers!

This song is from "Imaginaerum" (the seventh studio album from Anette era). Marko has great menacing tone here , and Floor Growls ( only few will notes this ). Plus , this song has a crazy Van Halen Vibe to it ( Van Halen - Aint Talkin' Bout Love comes to mind ). This song took me several listens and deep dive at first , and now I listen this song daily . Great reactions!. I'm 66, stumbled on Nightwish watching other reactions and have enjoyed watching others going through the same experience. Nightwish has been labeled symphonic metal, if you go back about 60 years or so another band started the Symphonic Rock Genre--The Moody Blues. Listen to their song "Nights in White Satin" I think both of you would like their music too. Rock On!
Believe it or not, the Moody Blues and Nightwish have had some of their best albums produced by the same guy - Pip Williams, who is very well known in the music business (but not to be confused with a well-known and lovely lady author also named Pip Williams).

Although I don't know music theory, I feel that Nightwish's songs are multi-layered. Everyone can concentrate on the level that most appeals to them, so the same song can appeal to a metal fan and also to a progressive rock fan and also to others. The other advantage is that you can listen to the same song and experience different musical emotions by playing on these levels. And once you understand the lyrics/poetry, you get new emotions again ! magical Nightwish !! Thanks for your reactions and enthusiasm, greetings from France.
In his lyrics, Tuomas often uses a river as a metaphor for life: It has a beginning, an end, and it flows along relentlessly. As you ride along with the currents of time, you will encounter many "islands" along the way; some horrifyingly frightening (Marco's part in this poet's play); some beautiful and wonderful (Floor's part). But he admonishes us to not let these islands just pass on by as we sail through life. Instead, "let it bleed, leave a footprint on every island you see." ha, when i first listened to this song very early in my metal journey i was like "meh that's a little bit to metal for me" :) now it's one of my favorites of nightwish, so this song needs to grow a little bit on one

I can hardly wait when you're reaching the songs that made me become a Nightwish fan in 2004. Like 'Wish I had an Angel', 'Nemo' and 'Dark chest of wonders' from the album 'Once', which was the beginning of my Nightwish journey. Good old times ;-)
This is one of the lesser reacted to Nightwish tracks in my experience, which is a shame, because it is not only a great song, but Empu's guitar really shines in this one. He is a master of tone, and always seems to play exactly what is required in service of the song - no more, no less. I've never seen a performance of this song outside of this one at Wacken 2013, which may be why it is not as popular. There are lots of examples of heavier Nightwish you are yet to discover, Coach. And also so many more melodic and harmonious wonders for Mrs Coach. As previously mentioned, "7 Days To The Wolves" from their Wembley 2015 concert has something that I think you both will love. (It's also a chance for you to see something apart from Wacken.) Cheers, NWA, Australia.
I really get a kick out of you two ... and you've earned my sub. Nightwish is the gift that just keeps on giving, and in all seriousness, Tuomas is the greatest composer of my lifetime. The band is perfectly tuned to deliver what he writes, and in Floor, he found the widest pallet of colors for his music and he's blossomed even further. His depth is beyond genius level and he only composes masterpieces. I have to say, I just love Mrs. Coach's appreciation of my favorite band of all time. There is such a smorgasbord laid out before you that you will not believe where this journey will take you. I don't think you've met the sixth member of the band yet, Troy Donockley - multi-instrumentalist whose speciality is the Ulliean pipes (Irish bagpipes without a droan). Tuomas & Troy have formed a side project with Tuomas' wife called AURI. It's quiet, peaceful music, but pure genius. Johanna (wifey) is a legend in Finland and has an incredible voice. When you want serenity, try AURI, whether you react to it or not. I guarantee you will love it. Well done, again from a new subscriber!!
Once again❤. Please take a sidestep to Floor Jansen solo. Her solo album was released in 2023 . It's quite poppy. One of my favourites is Daydream. Or listen to her Alone (heart) cover. You'll find it on her YT channel. Both is pure voice of Floor.

The Ghost River is a river of no return that leads to oblivion and death. The song is part of the concept album/film music Imaginaerum. It describes the situation of the main character, who suffers from dementia, is dying and is oppressed by his personalized trauma. There is a good documentary about Floor. It is in German, with English subtitles: SMS - The Floor Jansen Story (with eng subs)
This is the 4th best song of Nightwish IMO, right after their Holy Trinity: Ghost Love Score, Poet and the Pendulum, and The Greatest Show on Earth. 6:37 The best smile in all things Metal. 😊
I always see this song as a battle between heaven (Floor) and hell (Marco) for the souls that cross the "Ghost River" to their final destination. The "Ghost River" can be interpreted as the onward march of time. It will eventually "take your only child" as it takes us all.
Tuomas writes the words, Floor breathes life into them......Marko and Floor together is magic. Here's to hoping that the extended hiatus from touring is to try to get Marko back for next tour.
I love Emppu and his onstage antics! Every time I listen to this song I get the lyrics “the wheels on the bus go round and round” stuck in my head! 😂😂 In the slow transition when Floor sings by herself with just the keys I get goosebumps. The Nightwish Army is one of the most fantastic communities out there. ❤

It's so nice to watch two genuine people who really enjoy music and have fallen head over heels to Nightwish as most us have done. One thing you must add to your bucket ls is to one day watch Nightwish live. After being introduced to NW four years ago i made it my life's wish........Last year June, with my wife, We flew 13 000 km (8 000 Miles) to Gelsenkirchen Germany to go watch them live. What an experience. My wife cried when Floor sang "Decades In The Sun" with Troy on stage......keep up the good reactions coming 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Your NW journey is at the very beginning. Then there is Floor's solo career starting during COVID and up to present day. Then there is so much more of her in guest spots with other bands and with her two earlier Dutch metal bands. "After Forever" 1997-2009 and "Revamp" 2009-2016. By far her most accomplished and lauded history probably began in 2012 when she joined NW as an emergency stand in singer, when Annette got sick in mid-tour. Floor and Nightwish were made for each other. So that is when Floor was truly "discovered" by the majority of today's current NW fans. She was known long before that in European metal circles.
Mrs. Coach, just a FYI that Ann's channel is still there. Check out the gargantuan amount of Floor videos (184) she amassed. She also had quite a few Ayreon ones (even After Forever), which shows that she really was a connaisseur of top level melodic metal. In due time, your journey will lead you to that Ayreon Universe where all the greats from different bands assemble for an amazing flight. You'll recognize the name once you get there. Until then.. She was THE inspiration for 15yr old Floor and the one who gave Floor the idea that it was possible for a female to front a rock/metal band. You'll remember that name as well, if only for the near-unpronounceability of it for most Americans ;) Cheers!

As I often say, Nightwish was one of my greatest musical discovery 25 years ago. It became my favorite band. Never get tired of it.
Great reactions!. I'm 66, stumbled on Nightwish watching other reactions and have enjoyed watching others going through the same experience. Nightwish has been labeled symphonic metal, if you go back about 60 years or so another band started the Symphonic Rock Genre--The Moody Blues. Listen to their song "Nights in White Satin" I think both of you would like their music too. Rock On!
Deep Purple did a Symphonic bit too.
Believe it or not, the Moody Blues and Nightwish have had some of their best albums produced by the same guy - Pip Williams, who is very well known in the music business (but not to be confused with a well-known and lovely lady author also named Pip Williams).

Although I don't know music theory, I feel that Nightwish's songs are multi-layered. Everyone can concentrate on the level that most appeals to them, so the same song can appeal to a metal fan and also to a progressive rock fan and also to others. The other advantage is that you can listen to the same song and experience different musical emotions by playing on these levels. I can hardly wait when you're reaching the songs that made me become a Nightwish fan in 2004. Like 'Wish I had an Angel', 'Nemo' and 'Dark chest of wonders' from the album 'Once', which was the beginning of my Nightwish journey. Good old times ;-)
This is one of the lesser reacted to Nightwish tracks in my experience, which is a shame, because it is not only a great song, but Empu's guitar really shines in this one. He is a master of tone, and always seems to play exactly what is required in service of the song - no more, no less. I've never seen a performance of this song outside of this one at Wacken 2013, which may be why it is not as popular. There are lots of examples of heavier Nightwish you are yet to discover, Coach. And also so many more melodic and harmonious wonders for Mrs Coach. As previously mentioned, "7 Days To The Wolves" from their Wembley 2015 concert has something that I think you both will love. (It's also a chance for you to see something apart from Wacken.) Cheers, NWA, Australia.

I really get a kick out of you two ... and you've earned my sub. Nightwish is the gift that just keeps on giving, and in all seriousness, Tuomas is the greatest composer of my lifetime. The band is perfectly tuned to deliver what he writes, and in Floor, he found the widest pallet of colors for his music and he's blossomed even further. His depth is beyond genius level and he only composes masterpieces. I have to say, I just love Mrs. Coach's appreciation of my favorite band of all time. There is such a smorgasbord laid out before you that you will not believe where this journey will take you. I don't think you've met the sixth member of the band yet, Troy Donockley - multi-instrumentalist whose speciality is the Ulliean pipes (Irish bagpipes without a droan). Tuomas & Troy have formed a side project with Tuomas' wife called AURI. It's quiet, peaceful music, but pure genius. Johanna (wifey) is a legend in Finland and has an incredible voice. When you want serenity, try AURI, whether you react to it or not. I guarantee you will love it. Well done, again from a new subscriber!!

The Ghost River is a metaphor for each persons journey of life. Many twists and turns, ups and downs. We must all brave the journey to live life to its fullest and achieve our dreams. This song is filled with metaphors and imagery (including the mention of rape) depicting all of the darkness and light on this ride. "Rape" is what happens to our inner being when the world encroaches on our childhood innocence. Once again Marko is singing the role of the dark side, while Floor is the light. Nailed it Coach. Mrs. Coach also nailed it. This band loves each other and also loves to perform for all of their fans. It is not a job.
Ann was the Grand Dame of the Nightwish army. A beautiful soul. She was in failing health, but found solace in the music of Nightwish. We all miss her enthusiasm and passion for music. R.I.P. Ann 🙏🙏
Mrs. Coach is correct. Every Nightwish song has a deeper meaning. From person to person, spiritually, and from a perspective regarding our existence as humans on the amazing journey of life. You will come across some religious negativity in a few songs, but remember they are not against religion. They are only down on some of the frightening dogma and hypocrisy that most organized religions embrace. Remember this line, "Every child is worth a better tale". 🙏🙏🌹🌹

The Ghost River is a river of no return that leads to oblivion and death. The song is part of the concept album/film music Imaginaerum. It describes the situation of the main character, who suffers from dementia, is dying and is oppressed by his personalized trauma.

I always see this song as a battle between heaven (Floor) and hell (Marco) for the souls that cross the "Ghost River" to their final destination. The "Ghost River" can be interpreted as the onward march of time. It will eventually "take your only child" as it takes us all.

Tuomas writes the words, Floor breathes life into them......Marko and Floor together is magic. Here's to hoping that the extended hiatus from touring is to try to get Marko back for next tour.
