My favorite highlight of a no hitter of his was the last one, his 7th. He struck out Roberto Alomar, and as everyone starts to run to the mound to mob him, he casually walks off, smiles, and sticks his hand out to shake his catcher’s hand as if to say, “Been there, done that, no biggie.” Classic.
This is why Scully is one of the all-time greats in broadcasting. I'm not a Dodgers' fan but I would listen to their games just to hear Scully any day of the week.
I was at this game and still have the two ticket stubs, one mine, the other my date's (I made sure she gave it to me ... her ticket that is, of course). A few years later I got Nolan to sign one for me. And then in '86 I was fortunate enough to sneak out of work and see Mike Scott's no-hitter against the Giants. Never had heard this Scully call before; a true masterpiece even tho' it was against his team. Nolan & Vin -- can't ask for two classier guys.

They need to rename the Cy Young…with all the games he pitched during the deadball era and completed MANY more full games and he didnt get 3, Nolan ha 7 and strike out records, and he played well into his 40’s…

When I recorded this on my VCR, I started off on NBC. At some point I realized that the games was also on the then-independent KVVU-5 here in Las Vegas, which carried Dodger and Laker games off the LA stations. I thought, "If Ryan is going to pitch No. 5, I want Vin Scully calling it." Actually, the Dodger broadcast team at that time also included Jerry Doggett and Ross Porter, who were excellent too, so the innings they called were better than the NBC broadcast, too. Some day I'll get the whole tape professionally transferred to digital and post that.
Vin Scully did "For Love of the Game" ad lib! According to Kevin Costner, Scully was given a script but he protested saying, "baseball is a spontaneous sport". After all the game scenes were filmed, Scully sat in a booth, watched the scenes onscrean and called the game. BTW, they didn't have to reshoot any of his voicovers!
He was one of my favorite players growing up, but with flamethrowers all over the place now, my memory of Ryan was starting to fade. The first two pitches reminded me, though, how good he was. That first fastball had some serious tailing action, and then that curve ball!
There's nothing like seeing a moment like this....the best part is vin scully calling the game understanding the moment....yet even though he's calling for the Dodgers....listen to one of the greatest....when it happens....he always stays quiet....

The Reason Nolan Ryan is such a legend in particular -- his no hitters were no doubters. In at least 3 of the 7 no hitters he recorded -- 16+K's were involved. Both no hitters for Texas Rangers had like 15 and 16 K's , and one for the California Angels had 17. Nolan also threw a couple of 1 - hitters each with 19 K's ... When that guy was on-- HE WAS ON!!! Nobody can really say about 4 of his 7 no hitters "he got lucky on that play" for some sensational catch or extra effort on a foul ball. In his first 2 no hitters, there was no solid contact made at all, and 17K's in the 2nd one. In Fact, in the 2nd NO hitter in California, Norm Cash (a former .366 Batter and batting champ) came up in the 9th for his 3rd at bat with a clubhouse table leg to swing at the pitch , instead of a bat. Umpire made him get a real bat and 2 pitches later he promptly hit a weak pop up. Norm said of that game "the guy had otherworldly stuff.. it was a complete joke... I said I wasn't going to hit his stuff anyway when the umpire made me get a bat, why not let me try with the table leg..."
He had the most no hitters broken up in the 9th inning ever. I thought Yu Darvish would take that title from him after losing his 3rd potential no-no that late in the game, but Darvish has fallen way off that now, he's a joke.
Vin Scully was the master at knowing when to let the crowd excitement take center stage. After 6:10 he doesn't say a word!! Quite a few announcers could learn this lesson about when to stay quiet.
Ran into Vin Scully at a department store in Los Angeles. Asked for an autograph -- though he looked to be in a hurry, he was the politest guy in the world, signing and talking a while. A legend and a fine gentleman. It's said often, but in this case it's true: They don't make them like Scully anymore!
Amazing difference in the speed of the game. Nolan, despite being in his 9th inning, is just right back up for the next pitch. And the hitters aren't stepping out over and over again to adjust, re-strap, re-tie, and generally waste time on every pitch. Maybe the MLB should study these games...
Agree, MLB needs to take a look at a real game instead of the games hitters play when stepping out and wasting time. Managers need to look at this game and say oh yea, 9 innings, that's what I expect from my starters!
Shows how great Vin Scully was as an announcer when he was employed by the Dodgers, yet somehow would announce the game in its setting without being a homer about it like the guys who announce games today. I miss Vinnie...
I named my son after Nolan Ryan and Nolan Bushnell, two very important figures in my own life. His mother calls him "Nolie" so I was tickled to hear Vin call Ryan that. Good vid thanks.
It's 1241am Saturday morning October, 30th, 2021. I just finished watching the Atlanta Braves defeat the Houston Astros 2-0 in game 3 of the 2021 World Series to take a 2-1 series lead. I'm 56 and while lying in my bed as my Wife snores Her way into dream land I came across this video, I had turned 16 and remember watching this game in Virginia and hearing Vin Scully work His Magic with words. Truth be told I'd rather listed to Vin Scully call a game than see one in person, He could actually describe what I saw better than my eyes could see it. What a National treasure. I truly mean this from the Bottom of My Heart, Thank You God for Creating Vin Scully and Thank you for letting Me be alive when you did it.
I was there for two of his no hitters ! Amazing pitcher !! You’d get a 100 mph heater followed by an 87 mph curveball that looked like it was going to hit you between the eyes ! He had several bailout strike outs !
That second-pitch curveball to Reggie Smith was SICK! And you could tell from the way the Dodgers limped to the plate that they knew they weren't going to get a hit.
I knew the game was on both NBC and the Dodger feed here in Las Vegas that day. I said to my dad, "I'm going to record it, Ryan's going to throw #5 today." I recorded the Dodger channel because I knew Scully would call the end of the game if there was a no-hitter. I have no idea how I got so lucky that day because I've never won a sports bet in my life. I need to get the whole game transferred to digital so I can post it, but I'd probably violate the Dodger's copyright.
This was a nationally televised game, but at the time channel 5 in Las Vegas picked up the Dodger feed and so I had a choice of two channels to watch it on. There was never a question. Scully/Doggett/Porter were a great trio. In a few days it will be 40 years since this game was played. I'm so lucky to have recorded it. Back then, only a few of us had VCR's, and it's really cool the tape still works.
I was lucky enough to be at this game. My buddy and I weren't going to go because we'd already seen Ryan pitch several times that season. But it was the only day we were able to make the game so we got tickets and went. Talk about a baseball god's blessing!! Even got Ryan to sign my Topps card and ticket stub from the game. They even printed one of those cardboard records on the back of an Alpha-Bits cereal box with Gene Elston's call of the last 3 outs of the game. Wish I still had that record....
I got a few of the cardboard records from a subsequent Sunday edition of the Houston Chronicle newspaper. Rather small square-shaped in Astro colors if I remember correctly. I must still have them tucked away somewhere.
I was in the stands for all 7 of Nolan Ryan's no hitters. Also saw Hank Aaron's 715th hr, Kirk Gibson's hr in the '88 World Series and was in Mission Control in Houston for the Apollo 11 moon landing. Almost forgot to mention I was there when Evil Knievel tried jumping Snake River canyon.
Ryan had a supernatural arm, he was able to pitch for more than 20 years without losing velocity in his pitches. The only regret he may have had is he played most of his Hall of Fame career in bad teams hence preventing him from winning more games , more pennants and more World Series Titles. in fact , he only won only one ring when he was a young prospect with the Mets in 1969. I salute you Nolan Ryan. P.D his most strikeouts record may never be broken considering Starting pitchers go for 5 to 6 innings in today´s baseball at the most. It´s one of those milestones that will stand the test of time for years to come.
The Astros made the playoffs three times while he was there, including two trips to the league championship. Sometimes I think all the romance built up around him has clouded the way people remember him. Yes, he was dominant when he was on his game, but he was terribly unpredictable. As an Astros fan back then, in big game situations I'd much rather have Mike Scott or Joe Niekro pitching.

Why? Because the team basically sucked most of the time. To me Ryan is one of the greatest starting pitchers of all time along with Cy Young, Walter Johnson, Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson ,etc.

I watched this game on television. Mike Scioscia pulled a liner into right field that was nearly a hit. Terry Puhl, the right fielder made a running catch to save the no hitter for Nolan Ryan.
My opinion: Nolan Ryan is the best pitcher to ever do it. Period. 🐐. 7 no hitters! 12 one hitters! 18 two hitters! 5,714 strikeouts! Pure domination. With a lifetime batting average against .204.
I grew up with living the Dodgers and Angels. Saw Nolan pitch a no hitter live. Always loved seeing him pitch. I have no remorse this was against the Dodgers. In fact I'm glad, getting to hear the greatest announcer if all time call for the greatest pitcher of all time, what's not to love. One of my favorite prized possessions is a signed foul ball from this game from Nolan himself. No I wasn't lucky enough to see two of his no now live I bought it at an auction and will never sell it. Class is an understatement on both Nolan and Vin.
Strangely enough, I recorded this in Las Vegas. Local station KVVU Channel 5 picked up a lot of the Dodgers and Lakers games back then. If you watch the whole tape, I started recording this on the local NBC affiliate, channel 3, and at some point realized Ryan was a no hitter and switched it over to channel 5 so that if it happened, I would get Vin's call. I'm an Astros fan, but I used to watch (and listen on the radio) to lots of Dodger games just to hear Vinny. Jerry Doggett and Ross Porter were no slouches, either.
I actually taped this game up in Las Vegas. Local channel 5 carried the Dodger games. This was 1981, when VCR's were still rare and the tapes expensive, but I had a funny feeling before the game that Ryan was going to get #5. Even though the game was on NBC nationally, I figured if Ryan got his no-no, I'd want Vin calling it. This is probably the only correct prediction I have made in my whole life. I have the whole game on tape and someday will get it transferred digitally and post it.
Just happened on this... Great Pitcher, perhaps greatest! Notice how quickly he works? Seven no-hitters, 6000+ strikeouts, and look how quickly he works, unlike today's pitchers who you could read a book between pitches sometimes...

One of the best pitchers ever in terms of mechanics. Or anything else, actually. It was his mechanics that allowed him such a long career.
He put in the time conditioning. He was still throwing in high 90s 12 years after this in his final season.

Amazing difference in the speed of the game. Nolan, despite being in his 9th inning, is just right back up for the next pitch. And the hitters aren't stepping out over and over again to adjust, re-strap, re-tie, and generally waste time on every pitch. Maybe the MLB should study these games...
Agree, MLB needs to take a look at a real game instead of the games hitters play when stepping out and wasting time. Managers need to look at this game and say oh yea, 9 innings, that's what I expect from my starters!
Shows how great Vin Scully was as an announcer when he was employed by the Dodgers, yet somehow would announce the game in its setting without being a homer about it like the guys who announce games today. I miss Vinnie...

It's 1241am Saturday morning October, 30th, 2021. I just finished watching the Atlanta Braves defeat the Houston Astros 2-0 in game 3 of the 2021 World Series to take a 2-1 series lead.
I'm 56 and while lying in my bed as my Wife snores Her way into dream land I came across this video, I had turned 16 and remember watching this game in Virginia and hearing Vin Scully work His Magic with words.
Truth be told I'd rather listed to Vin Scully call a game than see one in person, He could actually describe what I saw better than my eyes could see it.
What a National treasure.

I was there for two of his no hitters ! Amazing pitcher !! You’d get a 100 mph heater followed by an 87 mph curveball that looked like it was going to hit you between the eyes ! He had several bailout strike outs !
I was at this game!!! Surprisingly lots of empty seats even though the game was sold out.

That second-pitch curveball to Reggie Smith was SICK! And you could tell from the way the Dodgers limped to the plate that they knew they weren't going to get a hit.

I knew the game was on both NBC and the Dodger feed here in Las Vegas that day. I said to my dad, "I'm going to record it, Ryan's going to throw #5 today." I recorded the Dodger channel because I knew Scully would call the end of the game if there was a no-hitter. I have no idea how I got so lucky that day because I've never won a sports bet in my life. I need to get the whole game transferred to digital so I can post it, but I'd probably violate the Dodger's copyright.

This was a nationally televised game, but at the time channel 5 in Las Vegas picked up the Dodger feed and so I had a choice of two channels to watch it on. There was never a question. Scully/Doggett/Porter were a great trio. In a few days it will be 40 years since this game was played. I'm so lucky to have recorded it. Back then, only a few of us had VCR's, and it's really cool the tape still works.

I was lucky enough to be at this game. My buddy and I weren't going to go because we'd already seen Ryan pitch several times that season. But it was the only day we were able to make the game so we got tickets and went. Talk about a baseball god's blessing!! Even got Ryan to sign my Topps card and ticket stub from the game. They even printed one of those cardboard records on the back of an Alpha-Bits cereal box with Gene Elston's call of the last 3 outs of the game. Wish I still had that record....
I got a few of the cardboard records from a subsequent Sunday edition of the Houston Chronicle newspaper. Rather small square-shaped in Astro colors if I remember correctly. I must still have them tucked away somewhere.

I was in the stands for all 7 of Nolan Ryan's no hitters. Also saw Hank Aaron's 715th hr, Kirk Gibson's hr in the '88 World Series and was in Mission Control in Houston for the Apollo 11 moon landing. Almost forgot to mention I was there when Evil Knievel tried jumping Snake River canyon.

Ryan had a supernatural arm, he was able to pitch for more than 20 years without losing velocity in his pitches.
The only regret he may have had is he played most of his Hall of Fame career in bad teams hence preventing him from winning more games , more pennants and more World Series Titles. in fact , he only won only one ring when he was a young prospect with the Mets in 1969.

P.D his most strikeouts record may never be broken considering Starting pitchers go for 5 to 6 innings in today´s baseball at the most.
It´s one of those milestones that will stand the test of time for years to come.
The Astros made the playoffs three times while he was there, including two trips to the league championship. Sometimes I think all the romance built up around him has clouded the way people remember him. Yes, he was dominant when he was on his game, but he was terribly unpredictable. As an Astros fan back then, in big game situations I'd much rather have Mike Scott or Joe Niekro pitching.

You could make a case had Ryan played for the Yankees, Reds ,A's, Orioles, Bucks during the 70's and 80's
But no
He played for the Angels and Rangers most of his career
And those teams performed poorly during those years
To emulate his case Felix Hernandez played his entire career for the Mariners and still put out outstanding numbers, but not not amazing numbers.
Why?
Because the team basically sucked most of the time.
To me Ryan is one of the greatest starting pitchers of all time along with Cy Young, Walter Johnson, Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson ,etc.
Vin was a baseball fan at his core. Dodger blue but still a true fan of baseball.
Absolutely. You could tell he was attached to the Dodgers, but he was a baseball guy first and foremost. He's absolutely pulling for Ryan and the Astros by the end of this one.

I watched this game on television. Mike Scioscia pulled a liner into right field that was nearly a hit. Terry Puhl, the right fielder made a running catch to save the no hitter for Nolan Ryan.
The only thing more impressive than the pitches of this LEGENDARY MAN is his character.
Against a tough Dodger lineup, too....Ryan was something else.

My opinion: Nolan Ryan is the best pitcher to ever do it. Period. 🐐. 7 no hitters! 12 one hitters! 18 two hitters! 5,714 strikeouts! Pure domination. With a lifetime batting average against .204.
And with all of that, he never won a Cy Young.
I grew up with living the Dodgers and Angels. Saw Nolan pitch a no hitter live. Always loved seeing him pitch. I have no remorse this was against the Dodgers. In fact I'm glad, getting to hear the greatest announcer if all time call for the greatest pitcher of all time, what's not to love. One of my favorite prized possessions is a signed foul ball from this game from Nolan himself. No I wasn't lucky enough to see two of his no now live I bought it at an auction and will never sell it. Class is an understatement on both Nolan and Vin.

Strangely enough, I recorded this in Las Vegas. Local station KVVU Channel 5 picked up a lot of the Dodgers and Lakers games back then. If you watch the whole tape, I started recording this on the local NBC affiliate, channel 3, and at some point realized Ryan was a no hitter and switched it over to channel 5 so that if it happened, I would get Vin's call. I'm an Astros fan, but I used to watch (and listen on the radio) to lots of Dodger games just to hear Vinny. Jerry Doggett and Ross Porter were no slouches, either.

I actually taped this game up in Las Vegas. Local channel 5 carried the Dodger games. This was 1981, when VCR's were still rare and the tapes expensive, but I had a funny feeling before the game that Ryan was going to get #5. Even though the game was on NBC nationally, I figured if Ryan got his no-no, I'd want Vin calling it. This is probably the only correct prediction I have made in my whole life. I have the whole game on tape and someday will get it transferred digitally and post it.

Just happened on this... Great Pitcher, perhaps greatest! Notice how quickly he works? Seven no-hitters, 6000+ strikeouts, and look how quickly he works, unlike today's pitchers who you could read a book between pitches sometimes...
