  • In this DIY - how to video I will show you just how easy it is to mix concrete by hand. I have included easy to follow steps that ensure anyone can mix the perfect concrete that has a range of uses such as laying slabs, securing fence posts or making a concrete slab.
If you don’t have a cement mixer, then this video is for you!
You are aiming to create a mix of four parts ballast (sand, stone and gravel mix) to one part cement. The parts are a single measurement, but each part needs to be the same quantity, for this video I have used a shovel however you could use any size container depending on the project.
Put 2 parts of the ballast on to the spot or into a wheelbarrow, then add 1 part cement before finally adding the last 2 parts of ballast. Now for the tough part of mixing by hand, mix this until you can no longer see the cement and the mixture looks the same colour throughout. Now add water a little bit at a time and continue mixing until you end up with the desired consistency, I have made this mix stiff as I am using it to lay some heavy concrete slabs.
    Congratulations you now have CONCRETE!!!!

1:8 for foundation strength- is that correct?

I would use 1:6, but if it's for an extension, i would consult the building inspector.
