China town was once a very busy street when Kuala Lumpur was developed in the 19th century. A lot of Chinese businessmen in tin mining business, food, and others opened shops and built roads around there. Search Yap Ah Loy in Wikipedia, he was one of the very important person who helped in developing Kuala Lumpur. Now, the stalls you saw were not managed by Chinese anymore, but there are still old shops owned by Chinese from 4th or 5th generation. The main street itself is no longer fascinating but walk a bit further and you will find very unique tea shops, restaurants, cafes that maintained the original building structure. I didn’t know these until I joined a local walking tour in Petaling Street.
You went to my 2 favourite noodle shops. Not many foreigners know about these 2 noodle shops. I first went to the beef noodle shop as a small kid. The quality is still as good.
You came on the Easterly Monsoon Wind season. Cooler, not too humid, and fresher with clearer night sky air BUT rainy. Out of fruit season but the food is so variety just like any other day.
Hi Evan, welcome to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. You are explaining the history very well. I don't even know despite being a Malaysian. Australia is hotter in summer at this time of the year with house flies, spiders, cockroaches and ants multiplying everyday. So, you are in the best country right now.
Maybe a bit of correction to the narrative. When we got independence from the british in 1957, it was still with four countries or states in that sense, malaya, sabah, sarawak and singapore. It remained that until 1963, when all of these four became a federation state and form one country called what we will all know as Malaysia. Singapore was booted out in 1965. Malaysia has 3 main races, Malay, Chinese, and Indian. But in sabah and Sarawak where u will also find KadazaN, Iban, Bidayuh. Citizens of Malaysia is called Malaysian. So you will understand when you shorten the Malaysian as Malay, you’re referring to a very specific race only. Malaysian endorsed many religions but the official one is Islam where the Malays and some other races may adopted the belief. Malaysia also has Christian, Hindu, and Buddhist and you may witness them already all across the city with different mosques, temples, and churches. Also last note to add, the first european came to our shore was not the British. British was the longest. Portuguese was the first, followed by the Dutch and then whatever else you may already explained in the video. That is why you will find their remembrandts at Malacca because the portugese and dutch did not ventured out of that city when they conquered it, only the British did. Hope this is helpful.
