Growing Melons on a Trellis | Vertical Growing

  • We had a lot of feedback from viewers when we first started growing cantaloupe and watermelon plants on a trellis. They were concerned that the fruit would be too heavy as it hung from the vines on the trellis and those were reasonable concerns! Fortunately we had a plan to help make it all work. Check out this video to see our solution!

    What a great idea! That would save a ton of space growing them on trellis.

    Bath loofah works too. Just cut the string that holds it all together in the center. It comes out like a netted tube. Cheap and easy.

    I grow my cantaloupe vertically, like you but I have never had to support the melons. They stay hanging on the vine until they are ripe (to the rind), then they detach. If they fall to the ground, it does not hurt them. I have always had problems figuring out when some things are ripe in my garden. With melons, I just look for them on the ground. They are always ripe and delicious.

    Hi Lance and Marci! I have some beautiful melon plants growing on a vertical trellis and they have lots of male flowers but very few females. Any ideas for what to use to fertilize them to get some fruit growing and to get some female flowers and fruit to set? I have used a straight 5-5-5 but I think they might need something that gets the fruits to grow. I hope you have ideas!

    • @RockingCHomestead

      I thought I replied to this already, but it doesn't look like it went through! I would try a cotton swab and pollinate it manually.

    Hi love the goats do you use the milk from the goats or make butter

    • @RockingCHomestead
      @RockingCHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We do not make butter, but we do use the milk to make chesses, yogurt, and soap. We love their milk. To make butter out of our goats milk, we would need to cream separator and they are expensive and take a while to process.

    May I know in what ratio should I use the following for my potted melon? Vermicast, composted chicken manure, bone meal, black soil, burnt soil, perlite, vermiculite. Thank you.

    • @RockingCHomestead
      @RockingCHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We use a Super Soil mixture, that we have done a video over and is in our playlist. It is hard to tell you what you need without knowing when kind of soil you are working with already.

    What is your spacing for planting when trellising melons?

    • @RockingCHomestead
      @RockingCHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think we went 12 - 16 inches. We kind of push the spacing to be a little tighter in the raised beds. Once the plants start to climb they go everywhere. We just try to tie them up where there is room. Didn't seem to make a difference in how they grew last year.

    Are there any problems with the hammocks getting wet from the rain?

    • @RockingCHomestead
      @RockingCHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      None that we saw! We do not get a lot of rain during the growing season so they stay pretty dry. Another person left a comment about using a bath loofah, one of those mesh ones. That could help if you live in a real rainy part of the world.

      These beds are 8 foot long, and we have two panels on them. I think we had about 4 or 5 plants.

    Hello my icebox sugar baby watermelons (some trellised some not) are over-taking my garden! How do I trellis plants that have already started growing too big? They're vining their way across the ground thru my peppers and tomatoes! I'm in need of some serious advice!

    • @RockingCHomestead
      @RockingCHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can get them up and tie them you can try to get them growing on something. Those plants are pretty bendy, but be careful.
