How to Make Shelving for an Alcove

  • In this video I make a shelving unit for an alcove on the side of a chimney breast in my house. The alcove has a radiator in it and I wanted to direct the heat into the room and not have it just absorb into the new shelving. I bought a sheet of softwood plywood and had the shop cut it down to the sizes I needed for project. My intention was to direct the heat from the radiator into the room by having the bottom of the shelving at a 45-degree angle. The alcove where I installed the shelving was slightly coved in the corners from years of paint build up so I cut a small chamfer on the back to provide clearance. I fixed the shelving into the alcove using three screws on either side.
This shelving is very sturdy and fits nicely into the space. When the heating is on the bottom piece does its job of directing the heat away from the shelving, and into the room. If heat going up into the shelving is a major concern, you could also fill the wedge at the bottom of the unit with insulation.
You could do this project with only a drill and a circular saw. The sander and clamps make it quicker but aren't necessary.
Drill: Bosch PSB 1800 LI-2 Cordless Combi Drill
Circular saw: Bosch PKS 18 LI Cordless Circular Saw
Random Orbital Sander: Bosch PEX 300 AE Random Orbit Sander
    Clamps: Irwin Quick-Grip 150mm, 300mm

Some of those beautiful mosaic tiles you can get would have finished the radiator sloping part a treat

Nice job fella, couple of quick questions - I missed the thickness was it 18mm ply used and how resistant was it to 'bowing' once you had the weight of the books on?

Thanks! It's 18mm ply, and it hasn't shown any signs of bowing at all. We even have a set of old cast iron weighing scales on the middle of the top shelf and it's as flat as it is in the video still.
