      i was just coming to the comment section to back Charles up on what he said and immediately saw your comment! Charles is so right, TRUE bed side manner is so important. i'll never forget the doctors and nurses who've shown me kindness and treated me like an actual person. i think it's easy to slip into that clinical nature when you're treating a patient because you kind of forget what its like to BE that patient. i hope everything goes well for you! good luck on your journey.

    The Japanese was correct ;) In Japanese there is no L-Letters, so the R-Letters substitute. In the way the Japanese is written, most Japanese language knowers will probably try to pronounce it with an L-sound, because the Katakana writing signals that the word is foreign.

      I think their problem was mostly on their "southern accent mentality" to pronounce the R hard. It probably was intended as a soft R. Like the difference in how you'd pronounce Real and etheReal

    Once he said "Frontier Spinning", I knew that was a yarn job! I used to work 3rd shift at a yarn factory in Yadkinville, NC called UNIFI. They take recycled plastic bottles and turn them into yarn.....crazy process, but if you ever see something branded with REPREVE, UNIFI's yarn made that product.

    I am not Japanese or an expert but I've learned a little bit of the basics of the language characters.
    チャールズ (Charles) the characters spell Chi-a--ru-zu - but you would drop the "i" in Chi, as it has a small 'a' character after, so it would sound more like Cha-ru-zu. Japanese language does not have the letter "L". And for the name リンク (Link) the characters are Ri-n-ku, again there is no "L" so you use the closest sounding characters, and there is no single "K" character (so you'd have to pick between - Ka, ki, ku, ke, or ko, to replace the L) - so in translation the "ku" ending makes the most sense. You can play around with google translate, type in your own name and it will show you the characters and how to pronounce it !

    The reason that there isn’t an L in Links name in Japanese is because there isn’t a traditional English L sound found in the Japanese language or writing structure. However if you were to say it in Japanese, Ri (り) it would sound to the ear more like a L. When saying R’s in Japanese you should have your mouth and tongue shaped as if you’re going to say the traditional English L sound while saying Ri(り) which should sound like Ree to English speakers. It will sound very similar to an L sound like Li. So when you are pronouncing his name it would sound more like Li-n-ku without a hard L or (r)i-n-ku. I hope that helps in any way!

    I had a similar experience to Charles with my husband in surgery. Was told the procedure would take a half hour but give them an extra hour for the anesthesia and I'm in my husbands room in the ICU said an hour and a half I put on a movie and when it was over nothing happened no docs or nurses coming to tell me what's up he was in surgery for 4 HOURS and finally the surgeon calls me to tell me what's going on. They left me waiting in his room with no information for 4 freaking hours

      @aug8478 he was not in the condition to do so, I was advocating for him and just as I was gonna ask wth was going on it was staff change and I could hear the nurses briefing the next shift and they said he was still in the OR

    • @FlynnGorman
      @FlynnGorman ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m sorry you had this experience. There’s definitely a lot of room for improvement when it comes to communicating with patients and their loved ones.
      While it is true that people should be their own advocates, the role of doctors should be to advocate for their patients too. They should make sure that no one is left unaccounted for, forgotten or ignored.

    Far from an expert, but basically there is no R or L consonant sound in Japanese. The closest is something of a combination of the two, but really it's a unique sound. It is typically romanized as ra, re, ri, ru, ro, for convenience essentially. (Using either a hard r or an l sound is not really correct). What is written for Charles is Chaarezu. (The zu is not like the long oo sound such as in zoo, it's more like the short oo sound such as in book).
    For Link it would be romanized as Rinku, but would probably sound closer to Linku; to my American ear at least. (And again the ku is not like the longer oo sound such as in coo, but rather closer to the short oo in cook).

    チャールズ and リンク!
    FYI, I'm not Japanese (well, I'm 1/4 but live in the the states) but when I was learning Japanese in high school (forever ago bc I'm getting old 😅) the R sound replaces the L sound in Japanese because L isn't really a consonant in that language, although what's interesting is it has a little bit of an L sound to it as well... at least that's always how I've heard it, it's a less harsh R sound and almost like a subtle L sound rolling into an R, like "Lrinku" for Link with the L being pronounced only ever so slightly, if that makes sense?
    (If you're actually fluent and don't have the most rudimentary Japanese language skills, correct me if I'm wrong, or if I can explain it better)
