The handle serves a few ways..particularly working on a lathe to save a trip to the hospital..and to reduce corrosion and dulling that comes with. Buy or make properly proportioned files to suit if you want...chalk can prevent bugging and clogging...and a file card will clean without rusting.
Thank you so much Doug for sharing your techniques! I too have never liked handles for those size files. It just feels so lacking in control! Having it reach the ball of the palm is just right, feels like an extension of the arm and gives all that fine motor control the gift of hands have to offer. Do you have any tips on cleaning out files, particularly the ones with finer teeth. I use a brass brush when I really must, but would be curious to know how you handle that job? Happy Summer
