Kkplumbing from Wisconsin.... guys... love the content.... please put a trap at trench drain then run horizontal to daylight or sewer etc....keeps rodents and air from access to the trench drain.... if not heated bldg...... pour gallon of rv antifreeze in trap in winter and after using during freezing temperatures.... you will be happy you did!!! I'm a little confused on this. Could you go into a little more detail cause I think it sounds like a smart idea! Planning on building a horse barn in a couple months and want drainage but worry about dirt and horse poop clogging french drains or any grates up. If you have any advice I'd be super thankful. Just wanna do the right thing the first time and not forget anything.
I've worked with those little bobcats (the Toro version actually) and one addon I consider essential is the stand on platform that attaches to the back. Two reasons, (1) You won't run over your feet accidently while operating it and (2) If the platform is bolted to the back (not the little trailer style one from the factory) adds extra deadweight to counterbalance loads in the bucket.

Hi uncle Jim. Thanks bud that's how we do the drains 👍. That pipe is what fits that style drain plus its under 5=1/2 "of concrete. It should be good under there. I would like to get a small dump truck before a skid steer. Wont be long and we will be at 10K. thanks for the support uncle Jim. 👍👊

Hi Bondo, have you used this type of drain with a insulated heated slab in garage or shop? Was planning on a couple of round floor drains but this would work great if you have had success with this type of drain with a radiant heated floor.
I don't use the plastic drains. I screw a 2x2 onto a form board on each side of the drain and pour up against it then I can pitch the floor in the drain, then add steel grate on the top. never have to fight to clean it. way cheaper
@ Where the Jones Iowa Matt is correct. I'm a cabinet maker who formed my own concrete driveway which sloped down to the garage. As Matt suggested, just form the "box" the height and pitch you desire with a 2x2 around the top parameter. Once removed, pour/slope the drain bottom of the trench to the PVC drain in the bottom of the trench. Of course you want to plan and run the PVC drain prior to pouring the main floor. Also determine what steel grating you will use as to determine what size to make your concrete trench lip. My exterior trench was still in great shape when I sold the place 10 years later. The only thing that I would change is to put a P trap near the daylight end. That should keep the cool air from flowing back inside the heated garage. Oh yeah, I had a rabbit squeeze through 40 feet of four inch schedule 40 and get caught in the elbow just below the concrete trench. Tough getting him out two weeks later! So definitely a P trap for me.
For grading (inside a building) we use a 695 Leeboy grader with a topcon system 5 laser system. We can use it for flat work (zero slope) or any slope floor you can design. All about the setup. For roughing in I prefer hubs with bluetops. For very tight spaces I use an excavator with a grade beam and thumb. Again, bluetops with layout. Works wonders

I would get your gravel pad in before you build it if it is a pole barn. The rough line for the drain I would just do after barn is up.

What brand of trench drain is that I have some but don’t know the brand and need more @bondobuilt
I am putting drain in mine, about 4 ft. from door opening. 30 ft total. But manufacture says 4 inch concrete under drain.
We always do a foot of tamped crushed stone with dust or crushed gravel. Never seen one move. Go with the manufacturers recomendations though. 👍

Isn’t the drain supposed to be completely encased in concrete? I have Zurn drains going in and they require 4 inches of concrete all the way around
How much would it cost to do this on a way smaller shed, barn? Really need a floor drain and don’t want to spend 10-20k to get one.
I can instal one for $1000 if I was doing the floor. The grade is the hard part.

We never put any under it with no problems. Just a good base of tamped stone or gravel. At least a foot thick.
