Agree with you Mike, I drove starting in the mid-70s and had many VWs. One thing I notice now driving my 65 type I is that in traffic now people see me, pass me, then slam on their brakes because they don’t want to be behind the old car because, I guess, it’s not going fast enough. It drives me crazy.

and they do it when I drive the minivan, no one behind me whatsoever, but they have to speed up, get in front and then slow down.....I don't know how big truck drivers do it every freakin day !!

I had a VW beetle in front of me recently in heavy traffic n even though I love V dubs n I have owned a few back in the days. , I had to change lanes because of the fumes it was giving off . I then realized that following a Prius or a Tesla was much more comfortable just because of the air pollution

I live on Oahu and it’s easier to run one as a daily here because: 1) fastest speed limit posted anywhere on island is 60mph, 2) there’s ample opportunity to take a scenic route and minimize motor stress, 3) traffic can be bad enough that you’re not moving faster than 5-10mph for long stretches and 4) there’s a strong enough network of suppliers that are never going to be further than 2 hours with traffic to get an emergent part. I’ve been able to take a project but with nearly no brakes on the highway during rush hour because it was that slow moving. I will say I’ve always had my motorcycle as a backup when the bug didn’t want to participate for the day. It’s also really a big part of the older community’s culture so in the few instances I’ve needed roadside assistance, an older uncle has stopped to help me get moving again

You spoke many truths in this complimentary video. Firm handshake to you sir.
I have been a VW nut since a child. I am almost 60 years old. I have a garden scattered with 6 classic beetles and 2 vans. I keep the glass protected from hail, but otherwise they are awaiting my reconstruct attention. I could tell nightmare stories of the vans I have had stolen and returned by the cops in total demolished condition. Another van was stolen, I found it, had to go to court and even though I had the title and witnesses CORRUPTION is real in the court system. It sits in my garden 25 years later...I digress.... I have had a beetle catch fire driving down the freeway. Somebody stopped and wanted to throw Mountain Dew on the fire. I simply scooped up some sand and dirt from along the side and threw that onto the fire and distinguished it instantly.
I drove one from Iowa to New York City one week before the towers were removed. A front axle broke 2 hours into the trip. It felt as though I had a flat tire. NOPE...The axle had broken and rewelded itself from the heat. I can't explain it. Some kind of miracle fix. Took several taxis to get a replacement. Nowadays, there would never be a VW bug stacked above 2 other cars in a junk yard. Those days are gone. Anyway, in Pennsylvania the sputtering caused us to pull over. A girl was actually driving at that point while I slept. I had her pull into a rest area and REPEATED to not turn the car off. Upon inspecting and unable to resolve the sputtering, I said - We're heading on even if I have to leave this car in New York City.
Long story short, a grommet on the back of the carburetor has 3 spot welds to hold that round piece of metal in place. That grommet was missing, and the brain does not just automatically see that when looking at the carburetor/engine when diagnosing a misfiring type of idle. Upon discovering this gaping anomaly, we searched for anything to cram into that vacant wound that would not be sucked in from the vacuum power created from the carburetor. A tiny little plastic SUCTION CUP that gets stuck to a window with a plastic stain glass decoration was spotted on the ground by my female copilot. Stuck the back of that plunger thing into that missing grommet hole and VOILA - the bug ran like new. It currently sits out in the garden.
I have so many fix-it with a rubber band or change the squirrel truths to tell about Volkswagens it would take forever to share They are amazing vehicles. I have lost a van and a bug due to having some type of bullseye painted on the side. People truly do love to hit them in traffic at full speed. That is how one sits out in the garden. They will all turn to dust, and I could care less. They do not define me just the same as my body is not me. Peace.

you are so right about the quality of parts today compared to the old days , I still drive my 67 bug daily in SoCal and for sure your right about the speed of todays drivers, I get passed all the time by old people {and i am in my 50s} so older people who shake their fist and throw me the wrong finger! on the other hand I get so many thumbs up it makes up for it. I also drove a 58 chevy Biscayne as a daily and the stopping power was deadly in San Diego traffic! so go slow and live the bug life !

I had a Golf mk1 turbodiesel as daily driver a few years ago. If your car is well maintained there's no problem. BTW many modern cars just break down at any time due to electronics... I had some problems in winter with the Golf, but that was because I ran it on used cooking oil which froze.
I agree that in the winter and rain you need extra attention. Yes, brakes are without ABS. On the other hand, old cars are lighter so easier in the snow. And you feel much better what is going on.
The Golf was damaged when I got hit by a police car on the highway.. I was driving the lowered speed limit because of the ice. They were going way too fast in their Volvo. Feeling safe but missing reality. Still miss that car. It could actually go 100mph on the gps.
Also, if you drive slow in a classic car, people accept it. If you drive slow in a modern car people are pushing all the time...
btw a old beetle is difficult to drive, too light in the front. I had one also and I it caught me by surprise a few times... But well the Beetle was already outdated many many years ago...

Use it as a daily driver, am cautious but I drive it.. have a back up, a truck, don't drive it that much just enough to keep it going so it doesn't waste away sitting.. Have never been stranded by the bug on the road but, my newer truck sure has...

California also is a lot faster than my State(Wisconsin). We have highways that are 70miles an hour, but we don’t drive like people in California. We have Illinois drivers and they drive way faster than we do. I’ve spent vacations in California and I really have to step up to drive in your state.
Another problem is driving when get older, you need more comfort to be up for the responsibility of driving.

One MAJOR difference between the 60’s/70’s and now was there were far fewer limited access highways (e.g., the interstate system). So most likely you had to rely on a US highway, which meant lower speeds and frequent slow-downs in and around urban areas.

I have a '72 Beetle, it's not my only car, but the only time I don't drive it is in the rain. The engine is practically brand new as it was rebuilt last year just before I bought it, and it's been nothing but reliable. Yes they need a bit of adjustment e.g fanbelt tightening etc but that's part of the package. They're not as safe, as modern cars, but nobody buys a car like this to feel safe - it's the experience of driving an old car versus a new one. The modern hack is soulless, whereas I smile everywhere I go in the bug, you are one with the car in pretty much anything classic and it's the raw feeling of driving something with no electronic aids or comforts that appeals!
I did daily drive a '68 then a '67 as my only cars about 8 years ago, and they got expensive as I didn't have the time or skills back then to do the maintenance myself. Best suggestion if that's the case is get one with a rebuilt engine (good rebuild, not cheap) as that will knock a lot of the reliability issues out right there. The '68 never broke down, the '67 did a few times as it was on twin carbs (not my choice, came with it) and was getting long in the tooth as well.

A few things i think can be done to "moderize" the beetles to keep up.
#1 Titanium cables for throttle and clutch
#2 944 brake swap with an Electric brake booster with a porpotioning valve to get the brakes dialed in
#3 Electric AC system (they are very compact) also has heat
#4 Ceramic clear tint to make the inside comfortable
    Engines there are plenty already

A lot of people are thinking that Mexico kept building Volkswagen Beetles after Germany stopped in 1979. If you have tried to import a Bug from Mexico, you already know that the U.S. government will NOT allow you to do it if the car is newer than 25 years old.
So yes, there are Beetles as new as model year 2003. Unfortunately, the newest one you can legally import (in about two weeks) is a 1998 model.
What it means is that thing probably has a sh!t ton of mileage on it already. Mexico is a poor country and people don't "collect" cars there.
It was someone's daily driver for two and a half decades. 🚘
