    Five Things Irish Terriers
    The Irish Terrier is active, medium sized dog that is suited for life in the city and rural environments. Its great companion and should fit comfortably with a single owner or family home. If you are considering an Irish Terrier as your next pet here are five things you should know.
    5. The Irish Terrier comes in three colors tan, red wheaten and wheaten. Like many other solid colored breeds, a small patch of white is allowed on the chest. Irish Terrier should have some "furnishings" on legs and head. The slightly longer hair on the front legs should form even pillars, while the rear legs should only have some longer hair and not be trimmed too close to the skin. The chin should have a small beard.
    4. Irish terriers are active dogs that enjoy consistent physical and mental activity. Irish terriers have less of an eagerness to please people than some other breeds but are mentally capable and enjoy puzzle solving.
    Outdoors they are full go running and jumping about but they are capable of relaxing when inside the house. They enjoy training, new tasks are easily mastered with food or toys working equally well as motivation.
    3. The Irish Terrier is a bold, spirited dog with a personality reflective of his heritage as a companion, protector, and hunter. Irish Terriers are good with people and have a highly developed sense of loyalty. The Irish terrier can be strong minded, it is important that they have a responsible leader, for whom they have natural respect. Most Irish Terriers love children and will tolerate rough-housing to a certain extent.
    2. The outer part of the Irish Terrier’s double coat should be straight and wiry in texture, never soft, silky, curly, wavy, or woolly as might be expected in the Kerry Blue Terrier. The coat should lie flat against the skin, and, though having some length, should never be so long as to hide the true shape of the dog.When groomed properly, the Irish Terrier coat will protect the dog from the environment. A properly cared-for Irish Terrier will not shed. The wiry coat is fairly easy to groom, pet dogs will need stripping only once or twice a year.
    1. The Irish Terrier is no cream puff with other dogs. He can be aggressive, especially toward dogs of the same gender. Training should begin right away for the Irish Terrier puppy. Even at 8 weeks old, he is capable of learning good manners. With solid socialization, training and consistent leadership, you can depend on this feisty breed to behave politely.
    There you have it five things anyone looking to own an Iris Terrier should know.

    I had a male IT named Argo for 12 years. He was brilliant with children, friendly and very energetic. He passe daway this summer, but he was undoubtedly the ultimate family dog and a loyal companion for all of 12 years.

    We had one when I was a kid. Real bastard of a dog but also a fun, smart, active companion. Not a beginner's dog, and can be feisty and unpredictable.

    Have owned two...both purebreds. They both were incredible dogs but my last one was WAY over the top. Extremely smart, gorgeous, easy to train, wonderful around children, very loving of family members, and ultra protective of family...great watchdog. The last one enjoyed playing with other dogs and other animals but the first was more confrontational to other dogs (more common for the breed). They were both females....we decided to not show both and kept as companion dogs although the second had parents that won at top shows in US. The last passed away at 13 years 3 months and never had health issues or slowed down until a week before she passed (kidney failure). Since they require hand stripping to maintain the best coat, they are a bit higher maintenance than many dogs and not all groomers know how to do hand stripping. Now looking for another.....the family really misses our Dirge Madra Molly.

      All terriers are quite happy to get weighed in... that's what the breed does. They were bred for aggression and assertiveness, and also the ability to think independently when required.

    Awesome video! Thank you for showcasing our breed 😁
    ...as a whole, the breed is great with kids of all ages, has no known genetic health disorders, hypoallergenic/doesn't shed, quick minded and smart. Only concern is that they're not really the type of breed you can take to a dog park due to being dog aggressive. Breeders usually advise against it. Wonderful breed as a whole tho... Thank you again Zeke!

    • @kurtisharing8559
      @kurtisharing8559 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think it really depends on how well you socialize the pup from a young age. I take ours to a nearby dog park on a daily basis and she does really well. She's not overly aggressive and romps and plays well with all the other dogs. She usually hangs with the bigger ones thinking she's much larger than she is. Ours will be 2 next month and has brought so much joy to our lives...and some "terror" mixed in. HA!

    • @KatieSanvick
      @KatieSanvick 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      we have a 5 month old IT male and we take him to the dog park for socialization- ive never seen aggressive dogs there so it's a good place for him to build on his social skills, he loves running and playing with the other pups. he started out very timid around dogs, especially larger ones but is getting much better at being social. he's even nice to our cat. i wouldnt say this breed cant go to dog parks, i just think its very important to help them build social skills as a pup so they are able to and learn to get along with other dogs as adults

    • @kurtisharing8559
      @kurtisharing8559 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree 100%!! Socialization is key to any breed for the best chances of a well-adjusted dog later.

      Kerries are extremely violent and aggressive when pushed, and will not give up or back down, even against multiple dogs. They will fight to the death, and not back down.
      Very proud dog breed, every clever and intelligent, but not for inexperienced dog owners.
