  • This is part two in a series of three on lathe hacks and upgrades I'm doing to my wood lathe.
    In this video I build my own tool rest and tool rest base for my lathe. It was a fun project for me to build with a few modifications along the way. I would love your comments down below about what you think.

    When I found out that a replacement banjo and tool rest for my vintage lathe would cost 2 x's what I paid for the whole lathe, I did as you did and made my own - a little different design, but same general idea. I left the nose of the banjo open-ended to make it easier to remove the banjo and easier to manufacture. Works for me.

    Good job mate, only thing I'd add is weld a hozontal bolt on top of your clamping bolt so you dont have to use a spanner but just turn it tight by hand. Otherwise, good job!

    Jake, the tool rest and base turned out to be very well crafted. You did professional quality work on this project. I like how you offset the tool rest bar to provide a longer length for your tools to rest on as you turn the wood. The pen looks real nice.

    I’m looking at converting my metal mini lathe to turn wood with chisels. I’ve got some good ideas from this so thanks for posting. 👍

    I too, made myself a tool rest, and a base/banjo, but NO slot in the middle or bolt.
    This was because I was turning replacement spindles for an antique staircase, and with spindle steady in the middle. It was very inconvenient to have to keep unscrewing the whole assembly, each time I needed to move to the opposite end of the spindle.
    So, a magnetic strip tool holder, cut into two pieces, and fixed to the wooden base with industrial, max heavy duty, double sticky tape, [or glue strip?] I used a bolt threaded into the wood to lock the tool rest height, and a slot cut across the bolt head with a strip of steel set into it, to make a 'butterfly' bolt.
    To place it, just drop it where required. To remove it from the lathe bed, just jerk it off. To fine adjust it, just thump it as required. Much more convenient!
    Works great!😎
    PS,
    If you want a really fast shiny finish on turned wood parts, that doesn't change the colour of the wood, try vehicle cellulose spray finish. Its really quick drying, hard, and no brush or other marks.

    Good job on the banjo and rest. The only improvement I can see is to make the height adjustment a bit easier would be to change out the lateral bolt to a "el" shaped threaded rod that would press against the vertical post at any height you want. You could even make a nice wooden handle. I also enjoy making tools and accessories.

    Exactly right, eBay is for inspiration not purchasing items we can make ourselves! Came for Matt Cremona, subscribed to see what's next 😉 Cheers from Down Under!

    Hi Jake,
    Just came across your post re Making new banjo (JIP) arm for an old lathe. It's works a treat and its ACE!!!!!!!!! I've looked high and low for a replacement banjo arm and the only ones I've found are on eBay in America. With the added tax and import tax, as well as the price of the item, was well beyond my pay grade. I was considering ditching the old Draper WTL100, but couldn't afford a new one. I made mine out of the end of a piece of walnut that I couldn't carve due to knots and shakes.
    Adaptations I made was to make it slightly wider to accommodate 2 post holes. 1 @19mm and the other @ 22mm as I have varying rest sizes on different rest I've been given. I will now be planning to make a second rest holder. This is after I've made an 18" straight rest with 2 posts. I will be using this for making walking sticks and long vases.
    I'm back up and running and now looking to see what else I can make to make woodturning more accessible to me.
    Thanks a million
    Crafty Kingfisher

    i have a similar lathe, with a homemade banjo (not by me). there is a milled stepped nut clamping to the bed. i didnt see how you clamped to the bed. i am trying to design a long toolrest with two banjos.

    Nice job...I am in the same predicament you were in...got a lathe with no tool rest or base...been thinking of a design in steel using 3/8" plate steel as the base....but I have a welder and you probably didn't at that time. I am afraid if I used wood for the base it would fail later in time....how has it been? Still working? If yes maybe I'll find a block of hardwood and use it instead of steel but using steel would probably take about as long as yours did...maybe a bit longer because I'll have to drill and tap some threads or weld-on some nuts etc.. But in any case nice job!

    Great fix, thanks for the very easy to follow video. What type of wood did you use? After a year of use how has it held up?

    • @Jake.of.All.Trades
      @Jake.of.All.Trades  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used some black walnut. It's held up well. it would be better if I had a nice big chunk of iron instead but it works well.

    Hiya, Regarding the turning, I'm sure you've heard of him but Captain Eddie Castelin is well worth checking out for loads and loads of good stuff. Others are Carl Jocobson, Sam Angelo (Wyoming Woodturner) plus loads of other. Keep turning, keep making. You inspire when you do. Good on you and good luck, Rich.

    what is the measurements of the banjo,

    Jake, Can you tell me if you used regular mild steel for your rest and what was the threaded piece that joined the top and bottom together? Almost looked like a large set screw in the picture? Or was it just a piece of threaded rod? Nice video, good info on what and why you did some things. Regards,

    • @Jake.of.All.Trades
      @Jake.of.All.Trades  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it was mild steel. I had this material left over from what came with the lathe. I just tapped the steel going horizontally and vertically and then cut the threads off of a bolt and ran a tap down it to clean it up.

    I'm curious, has this held up? The banjo on my '50's lathe cracked while i was turning and i would definitely be more comfortable making its replacement xmyself if i could do it out of wood
