  • In this video, I demonstrate how to use the PATH workbench in FreeCAD to process a part model and generate G-Code. I also demonstrate how to create custom tools and apply them to your job operations. I hope to try more complicated parts in the future. Stay tuned!
    Thanks for watching!

    Excellent fast paced instructional video about the processes of using FreeCAD to create GRBL code for your CNC machine. Best instructional out there that I've seen. Well done 🎉

    Thanks! Great short introduction to the path workbench. I especially appreciate, that you added the actual CNC process to the video, so we as viewers do not only see the CAD-aspects of this process, but were also "rewarded" with the full building process from CAD to CNC. This gave me a kind of "arc of tension" watching the video, as you bumped up the speed to 30 mm/s @12:45 ;-) I hope to see this in your 3D-print videos too, maybe as a nice timelapse of the printing process?

    Pretty great video. I learned a lot. I experimented with the engraving paths instead and it mostly worked out. Only setting the work position needs more thinking. A few things I think would be improvements: no music and mention the used FreeCAD version right in the title. Thank you from both a FreeCAD and a 3018 user.

    Please revisit, Version 21.2 no where's near this tutorial, Fanuc specifically and other post processors are broken.
    I have cam background, not impressed with surface machining versatility.
    Will stick with my 1996 package on old P2 and P3 towers with Win98 SE, I machine molds with it so, imagine a CNC router....

    Thanks for this Tutorial. I would like to know why the cut started diagonally opposite from where the tool tool was shown, I find this to be a problem when trying to set up my work piece on my 3018 cnc Knowing exactly whre work will start would be nice, I thought the cut should start where the origin is? I hope this makes sense?

    Hello your video is well done, I only have some difficulties since I don’t understand English well and I have to use the automatic translation of subtitles; so I get lost when you click on some icon and I have to go back several times to see what you click ... anyway I like how you deal with the various issues. to conclude since I use mach3 I wanted to ask you which format should I choose for the export file at the end of the job? Thanks in advance Agostino

    hi. when you set the bit length in the tool editor, is it the length of the tool after it protrude out of the collet or the just the total length of the bit.

    • @KTECDesigns

      It is the total length of the bit.

    Maybe it's a good idea to point out that in Freecad, speeds are in mm/s and in general in CNC speeds are in mm/min. Probably that's why you went that fast on the bench. 30mm/s = 1800mm/min So probably your machine went it's maximum speed.

    Hi Seth, I am a newbie to FreeCAD, having previously designed my model in Blender and exported the mesh as an STL into Fusion 360. I have successfully imported an STL mesh into FreeCAD but cannot begin a new job in PATH as I do see a model or template when I open the window. I guess that I am missing a step but unsure what that would be? Thank you in advance and hope to learn a lot from your tutorials.

    • @KTECDesigns
      @KTECDesigns  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven’t worked with STLs for this kind of application, so sadly I won’t be much help to you. But, you might want to try using a solid model instead of a faceted one.

  • @danaschoen432
    @danaschoen432 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just a little help here. I would encourage you to get your vocabulary correct with regards to "cutters". In the machining trade we never refer to cutters as "bits". That name is ok in a wood shop, but in a machine shop, "Cutting tools" is a generic term for any item that contacts and removes material. "Drills" and "endmills" are distinct and do specific jobs. Interchanging them causes ambiguity and confusion. That said, this has been a very helpful video. Thanks for a job well done.

      Thanks for the encouragement! I am sometimes sloppy with my nomenclature. I'll try to remember to say it right next time.

    Does the toolpath just ram the end mill to depth when contouring? Or does it gradually bring it to depth? Some of the visualizations I see on YT make it seem that way. Is it just the choppiness of the visualizer?

    • @KTECDesigns
      @KTECDesigns  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is set to just plunge directly into the material at the specified depth, not to ramp down. You can use a ramp down "dressup" on the profile toolpath, however. But I think this will override the tab dressup. Unless someone else knows better?

    • @weirdsciencetv4999
      @weirdsciencetv4999 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KTECDesigns how does this not break the endmill?

    • @KTECDesigns
      @KTECDesigns  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@weirdsciencetv4999 Well, for one I'm only machining plastic here, not metal. Secondly, the type of endmill I'm using can also drill holes, so it is ok to plunge directly into the material. I make sure that the plunge speed isn't fast, and that the spindle speed is sufficiently fast.

    • @weirdsciencetv4999
      @weirdsciencetv4999 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KTECDesigns Oh I get why your settings are as such, what I am wondering is if there is no option in FreeCAD to ramp the endmill in for normal contours/pockets. I haven’t seen anyone do this yet.

    • @ProBangers
      @ProBangers ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@weirdsciencetv4999 Check out 18:15. That's where you can see the dressups, one of them being RampEntry. @KTECDesigns did mention that he thinks it may overwrite the tab dressup, so I'm not sure about that. It would seem wild to me if you can't have more than one dressup, because surely many operations will require both tabs and ramp-ins.

      Thank you for watching! As for your question, I get that message all the time, and I'm not quite sure what it is. I don't think it's an error, maybe more like a warning. It doesn't prevent the G-code from processing, so I have just been ignoring it.

    at 3:33, why did you raised the sketch plane by two mm instead of making the sketch on the surface directly ?

    • @KTECDesigns
      @KTECDesigns  ปีที่แล้ว

      There is an issue with modeling on reference topology in FreeCAD. There are many YT vids on the matter. So it’s current best practice to simply adjust the position of sketches.

      @@KTECDesigns ok. Is it because of the direction of the pad that is created? For example, could I decide to create a sketch on the XY plane, then create a pad that extrudes below the plane, and then on this top face, makes sketches for holes and other features?
