1960 West Bend 12hp

  • West Bend made some excellent outboards that I don't feel get their due among collectors. The 1955+ West Bend-made fiberglass hooded Elgins and 1956-65 West Bends had the speed of a Mercury and the serviceability of an OMC.
Granted, the styling is open to question..... Personally I like the funky futuristic '58-'62 styling and love the "dashboard" light and the crazy white knobs on the controls.
Some of the parts such as the waterpump, magneto and carb parts cross over to later Chrysler and Force motors. Alas, this motor has the 11-tooth bendix gear that is NLA and almost certain to destruct soon. And any WB specific hood and trim parts are also very scarce - those lucite shark emblems are so fragile that even looking at them could cause them to fragment! And many people HATE the wire and pulley system for the throttle, however the key is to be sure the phenolic pulleys are intact, (without grooves), spin freely and the spring tensioner is working.
Come take a virtual tour of the 1960 West Bend 12hp. I was really impressed with this motor on my battleship-like DuraNautic - if you get one I think you will be too!

I just got a 1967 Chrysler 6hp out from a barn. It had been sitting for over 20 years. She fired right up and runs like new! I wish there were more unique and cool motors like these West Bends, Chryslers, Elgins, Sea King and Scottatwater etc in Norway. They are really uncommon here.

Very nice, I have a 56" Elgin 7.5 h.p I broke the flimsy recoil plastic pretty quick! But I just do the trusty ole rope wrap around the flywheel n she fires right up! Thanks for sharing yours👍

I really nice outboarder. Since a couple of days I have a same one. Unfortunately the preowner lost the prop. 🙄.
It's hard to find an original one for replacement.
The dimensions should be 8,5x8. Is it right?

You are right, as a kid, I always laughed off Elgins/Westbends, and you never saw many of them on the salt water. But now that I am much older, and a bit more open minded, I have come to appreciate what nice engines they are.

      Hello from Germany,
If you still try to repair here are some
      Tips for
It's necessary to dismount the Pole Wheel . Therefore you need a big puller tool. If the pole wheel is removed you can check the contacts, check also for good contact all grounding contacts. For the first you can try to clean the contacts. Than you remount the pole wheel and check for sparks if you pull the starter. If the ignation does not work remove pole wheel again. Mostly the capacitors are broken ( internal disconnect or shortened to case) or have a lost of capacity. If you have the right instrument you can check the caps for short-circuit with a resistance meter and for capacity check with a capacity meter. The correct value is around 0,5 uF or higher. Maybe you can replace capacitors and ignation coils with semilar devices from chrysler. You can also try to replace it with ignation capacitors from Bosch. It can work maybe.
      Greetings from North Germany
      Sascha

Identical to the Westbend 18 H.P. I just picked up a 18 HP Silvershark 1962 for $300.00 c/w original tank.

      Did you ever find parts?

@@timramirez1175 found a impeller. Used the motor 2-3times but as any Chrysler from those years the gear for the pull cord broke. Im thinking about just making it look good ans hanging it up as a display haha

I have a Speed Bee 580 5 hp with what looks like a non water pump ( force feed tube ) Clinton / Eska leg . The only engine I can find like it on the interweb is a West Bend they put on Simplex Go carts. Ever seen one of these I speak of ? Kinda looks like a Ted Williams or Eska. PS The engine only has the Chrysler name though. But its a 580 West bend for sure.

Change the carburetor from and 18H.P. Westbend and you have a 18H.P. outboard, thats the only difference. Like the Evinrude 9.9 of the late 60s early 70s you can remove the restrictor plate.
