    Team cotton percale. I’m a hot sleeper even in winter so sateen is far too warm for me. I love the coolness of cotton percale and I’ve found that even though the sheets are “crisp” they feel soft and are so cool and comfortable to sleep in.

      Same!! She hit the nail on the head with "a good quality men's crisp white dress shirt"!! I had a boyfriend at one time who let me sleep in his! I could buy my own, but even when laundered I could somehow still smell him in it. Even if it was psychological!! Hehe. Plus... I read an article in Cosmo once many years back that did a poll with men about lingerie vs no lingerie and which they found the sexiest. Across the board most men found his partner dressed in nothing but an oversized men's white dress shirt (preferably his) to be the sexiest thing a woman can wear to bed. Just as an FYI...TMI too probably but it reminded me of the article. Assuming you are female and didn't know this already I thought you'd enjoy my nostalgia and how we as women always put so much pressure on ourselves when men really do just want something classic and simple most of the time.
      P.S. I realize this pertains to heterosexual males with their heterosexual female partners. It could contain other sexual identities, however this article and the poll itself was only taken from and written about the above mentioned. I wasn't excluding anyone personally. Blame Cosmo in the 90s for that one! Heh
      Maybe it was after that Sharon Stone movie scene??? Hehe

    Watched several comparison videos like this today and yours is the first that has demonstrated or mentioned that "rustling" sound that percale makes. I have a set of percale sheets from Brooklinen, very nice quality, have held up really well over the several years we've had them, but I'm over the loud "rustling" sound. Hasn't lessened with washing as I hoped. They are smooth and soft and no issues with quality, but yes, they are just as loud as my husband's crisp white cotton button-down work shirts, lol. Just my own annoyance, but it's something I notice every night as I typically toss and turn (mattress issue, not the sheets).

    Prefer crisp and thick cotton percale BUT just bought Kirkland Signature NEW Pima cotton sateen...680 tc for $79.99 king at warehouse (89.99 online). They are the lightest sateen I’ve ever found. Still a tad warm in August but will be great winter cotton. Came with 4 pillowcases. Super high quality with 1” all around elastic on fitted sheet and generous size flat sheet. Laundered well and dried in 35 minutes on LOW! So great energy saver in the dryer for us frequent launderers. I do highly recommend. Liked them so much I bought some for our vacation rental as well. Gift worthy sheets in case you all need Christmas gift ideas.

    I like sheets that stay up over you, especially my legs. By that I mean they do not drop down between leg# etc and you can turn over under them and they do nor roll with you. Hope that makes sense. I have had high count supima cotton that I really liked. Percale I guess

    I do come at this from an admittedly ridiculous perspective. I have always been fascinated by jacquard looms, which you use to make sateen; not just because of their fundamental importance to the Industrial Revolution but also because their punch card system formed the basis of modern computing. So, when I look at a sateen sheet, I always think about the profound impact their manufacture had on the world.

  • @tinak3271
    @tinak3271 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I used to be all about sateen, for thirty years or so. But now I've become a percale fan. In fact I gave all my sateen sheets away. Sateen is great. The softness is amazing but I need to sleep cool. I can no longer handle the heat that sateen sheets hold.
    I like the soft yet crisp feel of percale. I'm not a fan of the super crisp but just a little crispness. I like how they don't slide around so much and the really like that they DON'T have a sheen to them. They gave me the more homey feeling. The idea that they are somehow old fashioned and speak of a different time. It's silly but I really enjoy the feeling that they are clean and fresh. Sateen gives me a different psychological feeling.
    Sateen is a different psychological experience for me. At a time when I had more feminine tastes, I preferred sateen. The softness of them. I find them more sophisticated (psychological).
    The bad thing is that Percale sheets are so hard to find now! Most stores, online in brick and mortar don't even carry them. Most only come in 200 thread count where I prefer 400 and finding them made with supima, pima and egyptian cotton is near impossible. I finally found them at two online stores and bought 8 sets because I know I won't be able to find them again, should the stores stop carrying them.
    Basically it's about sleeping cool and hot, Sheen or no sheen and the psychological feeling they give me.
    Percale

    • @goodiegoodygumdrops
      @goodiegoodygumdrops 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Question!!! How does supima compare to Egyptian cotton? I have a couple 100% Egyptian cotton sheet sets (not sateen just Egyptian) and I wish I had bought more because I can't find my brand anymore! They are SO soft and have held up amazingly well. (I've tried 600 thread count sets that can't even touch the softness of mine.)
      But my question is.... have you ever tried the Casaluna supima percale sheets? Is supima anywhere close to being as soft or as durable to Egyptian cotton?

    • @tinak3271
      @tinak3271 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@goodiegoodygumdrops Pima cotton is a supposed to be some of the finest cotton in the world. . Supima is the name of an association that promotes pima. Supima is from licensed mills. It's quality
      It has excellent durability and softness. Personally I would choose pima or supima over Egyptian cotton.
      Percale and sateen are just different weaves. Percale is one thread under and one thread over. Also known as a plain weave. where sateen is three threads over and one thread over which gives it that silky feeling.
      I understand why you can't find your brand anymore. The good long stapled Eqyptian cotton is now incredibly expensive and now they can label any kind of cotton that is grown in Egypt as Egyptian cotton (even stuff that was never grown in Egypt is often labeled as Egyptian). And often it isn't that good of quality. If you want the good stuff it will cost about $1000 or more.
      You probably got your sheets when it was still a quality product.
      You should also know that a good percale weave should be from 200tc to 400tc because what makes percale cool is the air flow. Anything above 400 and it's not going to be that cool. 250tc is supposed to be ideal.
      With Sateen weave you want to go higher but 400tc is supposed to be the ideal. From 800tc to 1000tc is a gimmick. They use thinner strands and twist them together because that many threads cannot fit on a loom.
      You may find you like Supima better. I do. I find it much better. Especially these days.
      I do know that 100% cotton percale sheets are very hard to find and 100% pima or supima cotton percale sheets are nearly impossible to find. Target and The Company Store were the only stores that I could find that sells them. Even 100% cotton ANYTHING is getting much harder to find. Try looking for cotton socks. It can't be done (almost).

    My boyfriend went into a Dillard's department store a few years ago, and just happened upon some sheet sets that were on discount. There was only five left, so he bought them, and they were the most insane, thick, crisp comfortable sheets we've ever slept on. I wish I could remember the brand. Then, last year, my boss's mother bought me (I work as an assistant for the family) bought me some sheets for Christmas from a company called Pizuna. Again, these sheets are thick, heavy when you take them out of the washing machine, crisp as ever and soooo comfortable. The tag says, "long staple cotton" but I don't know if they're percale or sateen. There is no sheen at all to them. I'm not a big fan or sateen, but I don't know if they're percale either, because they're so crisp, but very thick. Also, they are 1 ply, which is very important. I wish someone could help me identify what sort of sheets these are, because I need another set.
    One other sheet I remember from way back in the 90s, was some my mom bought me from Martha Stewart called "T-shirt" or "Jersey" cotton sheets. They felt like you were sleeping on a giant t-shirt! I would give anything to find some of those again, but Martha isn't making them anymore and I don't want to buy just any, because they'll start pilling, which I detest.
    So, my # 1 sheet kind is the crisp, matte kind that is heavy & thick.
    2nd would be the jersey or t-shirt kind and lastly, sateen.

    Percale tends to wrinkle.....I prefer heavier and more silky soft sheets. Usually Percale pound for pound is less expensive than the same company's sateen set. Ahh...buttery. Good concise but, detailed explanation. As we should know, sheets are manipulated by thread count, fiber quality and manufacturing. I'm not joining a sheet team. ;) I do give a "sheet" though. The best Sateen sheets to me are the more expensive, softer and almost cold to touch/shiny due to very high thread count and materials - very expensive.

    I always purchased sateen sheets but I had an 800tc that my husband shredded I kid you not. So after we got married I figured I better look into something more durable. I’m sleeping on percale for the first time and they’re only 300tc but feel buff and sturdy. I am praying they hold up better than the sateen ones I had.

    I keep trying to find sheets like some old ones I have. They aren't "soft" and they're cool and stiff but when I bought percale which claim to be crisp, it wasn't the same feeling /: help!
    Edit:Just realized you compared it to mens dress shirt. Yes my old sheets feel just like that but the "percale" onea I bought doesn't feel that way. any material blend?

    They both seem very crispy. I want something that feels soft and drapey like microfiber but more breathable

    Sateen for me, mainly because of the feel, and I tend to sleep with the room temp lower than 65.

    • @Mattressclarity

      Yes 100% cotton sheets can be produced in a sateen weave, still 100% cotton just a different feel, a little heavier, more satin-like and may sleep a little warmer!
