I bought a heated pants and vest this year and they are awesome. You can stay cool walking out but then when you start to get cold you hit that little magic button and it’s like slipping into a warm bath.
It's amazing how much heat you lose from the top of your head. As a bald guy I can say multiple layers of clothe covering your head up is crucial to stay somewhat comfortable in the stand on a cold snowy day.
Tip for those hand warmer packs. Throw them in a ziplock at the end of your morning hunt, and then open up a new pack for the evening hunt for your hands, but re-use the morning ones in your midlayer pockets to help keep your core warmer.
I tested my solitude jacket last winter on the New River Gorge bridge walk. 850 feet above ground at one point on a narrow cat walk with nothing blocking the wind. It was upper 20s temps with gusting winds and snow showers. I didn't feel a bit of wind or get the slightest chill on my upper body with a few simple layers underneath. First Lite is definitely worth the investment for cold weather hunting!
I hunt in Canada, it gets really cold. I've tried everything and what works best is an electric heated vest, hand warmers and socks. You can control the heat level and allow you to wear less layers and increase mobility. If you are sitting in a stand you will get cold...you need clothing that has the integrated heating. Those cheap chemical hand warmers cannot be controlled and you tend to sweat with them on.
I've been wearing first lite bibs and coat for a few years. Absolutely a game changer. Tip, buy first lite gear on black friday. They have great sales every year.
Lol my first hand warmer was a pair of old wool socks with the feet cut out and the leg sections doubled up like a tube. Should have patented that idea in the early 80s 😂
One thing i started doing that has made a world of difference is I change my base layer shirt for a fresh dry one once im at my stand. Usually i go from a first lite wick to a furnace.
A good tip is don't wear anything that could restrict blood flow while sitting. Even the elastic In some brands of underwear will cut off circulation, including socks and cuffs, also those thumb slots in sweatshirts and thermals can actually just make your hands colder by restricted bloodflow

Same. I just run too hot, and sweat is the killer in cold weather. I usually walk out into cold weather with just my Aclima woolnet baselayer and Appalachian Gear Company All-Paca hoodie. If it's seriously cold I'll throw on my Woolpower vest as well. Start out cold and once you're walking it will be perfect.
@@foxf6A lot of people laugh but fishnet base layers have been a game changer for me. If it's good enough for the Norgies it's good enough for me. I tend to sweat less on the way in and if I do sweat I don't feel it near as much and it dries faster.
Long underwear is a must if your gonna hunt in cold weather IMHO. All good tips Jeff. Now that I am older, I hunt in heated stick built shacks, including insulated floors. Rifle shacks over looking food plots in November cold weather is a killer combination. (Norther Maine near Quebec and New Brunswick Borders.)

Excellent video. I've been using "Boot Blankets" (or similar) for at least 20 years (I think), and find them to be the indispensable. Even when it's below zero (F!), my feet stay nice and warm, and I haven't used insulated boots in years.
I lose my center of heat easily. I wear Wooltimate, and it is awesome. I also have a nice thick face mask for really cold temperatures, and I invested in. a pair of heated socks. My Wooltimate jacket keeps my back covered always, but I like the idea of the bib overalls. Also, when I am walking to the stand, my jacket is zipped down, and I don't wear my skull cap. Once I get in the stand I will zip up my jacket, and I turn the heated socks on only if my feet start to get cold. I love the tips from Whitetail; they've really helped improve my hunting, and to say I am grateful is an understatement. Thank you so much!
I'm from North Dakota right now we are having a super cold snap. I hunt in a ground blind. My feet are the first to go. I've tried everything but they still get frozen. I use 2000 gram insulated boots,wool socks, and artic shield boot covers. I will throw in hot hands in the boot covers
I hunt in Virginia and North Carolina. Last year and this year has been warm. We did have a cold snap here with snow blowing around. But it was just a dusting and melted the next morning. We still have templates in the 50s and I think one day next week is 68.
If you’re cold, think about your kit as Active Insulation and Inactive Insulation. For me at under 30 to -15 degrees, I’m using a Sitka heavy base layer top & pants, 200 gram FL Wool top mid layer, light (40-60gram) synthetic puffy, and wind resistant or blocker as pants or bibs as my Active to get my setup. Lots of walking to get public spots and I get hot. I almost always dump heat by stripping layers to get heat and vapor off of me. Then I’ll add (8oz feather) down pants between base & pants or bibs. Adds (3.5 oz feathers) vest under light puffy. And either wind blocker jacket or (4oz-11oz feathers) down jacket as the shell depending on temps and wind. Ever since I started this program, I’ve been able to have lighter socks, lighter gloves, and lighter head gear with better results. Gone as low as 15 degrees below wind chill so far and been toasty and comfortable. Hope that helps some people.

Took a nice buck yesterday with a broken g2 but it doesnt make him any less badass. Nice mass all the way through, decent tine length. No record holder by any means but a beautiful buck and a nice freezer full of meat.

One other trick I’ve found to keep my feet warm is adding hand warmers to the front pockets of my second layer pants. Make sure they are positioned on your inner thigh near your arteries. Warms the blood to your feet!
Great info. Have you ever used BAMA socks? Lil slipper you wear inside your boots, pull moisture away from your feet, very fast drying. I use them in cold weather when wearing winter rubber boots. Good luck out there! 🤘🏻
I bought a two pocket pouch with an adjustable strap, put in small or large size warmers in slots then turn around and cover kidneys ( wear a shirt) and what a difference it makes. Someone who knows how to sew can make one.
I’ve got a big question…this is the first season I’m running Sitka and I love it already. We’re from PA and deal with damp, humid cold. Quite frankly it cuts thru layers pretty quick. Sitka has neck gaiters/face masks sown into the hoods on the Fanatic and the Traverse hoody, both coats of which I can speak highly of. I love having the Fanatic hoody gaiter up on my face, combined with the low pro hat for early season. The concealment is awesome too. However, the issue I run into is that when it’s cold, the material gets damp from my breath and doesn’t wick as well, and then it’s colder than just having nothing at all on my face.
I’ve had this happen with other brands of hoodies, and even my Serius neck gaiter which is actually a very soft fleece material. That actually got frosty one year 😅 anyway any suggestions?
Jeff, i have about 40 acres full of mature oak trees that produce very well every year but there’s so much honeysuckle that the deer never have to leave the cover to eat other then entering and exiting crop fields here in northern Indiana. How do I decided to take out cover without taking out to much cover?
What might be wrong with my property? Opening weekend gun season in northern Wisconsin...fawns all over my 40 acres all day long everywhere. However, not a single mature doe or set of antlers seen the whole time.
Dead does? Also no primary rut left. Button bucks left. Doe family groups and bucks move to FOOD right now. High quality food. And mature bucks will move 5 times further to find it.
My biggest problem is my feet. When they get cold I’m done and for some reason I cannot find warm enough boots. I’m wearing merino wool socks, and a 2000gm insulated rubber boot and below 20degrees my feet tend to freeze. I’ve tried everything. Heated socks (battery packs don’t last). Hot/toasty toes warmers, (didnt work either). Just don’t know what to use now.
I'll tell you what worked for me. I could never find a regular boot that would keep my feet warm longer than maybe an hour in 20F or lower. I heard this from a guy and kind of tweaked things to my liking. It's a 4-layer system. 1. Thin Alpaca sock. (Take your choice of brand, I wear Pacas mostly). 2. Thicker wool sock (I prefer woolpower 800s) 3. Down Booties (I use Fjallraven, but there's lots of options) 4. Boot Blanket (I got mine from Grey Wolf Woolens, but again you have lots of options. If this alone isn't enough for you, you can toss a handwarmer inside the booties because they're more loose fitting and breathable so the handwarmer can work, unlike in a normal boot. Mind you, this combo only works if you're going to be sitting still, you can't really walk around. But if you're planning on sitting on-stand or on the ground for 8+hours I've never had anything work better. I also thrown down a thin $5 foam seat cushion to rest my feet on instead of putting them directly on a cold steel stand that sucks the heat right out of them. Other option is my dad swears by the Heater Body Suit....though I've never tried it myself.
Let's put it this way...the thermic is DEFINITELY warmer than the Fanatic, And I feel fits better and more intuitive Hunting features. The Core is a great all around fit, but not as warm as the Fanatic....which is a good thing. We also wear the phase down to in the high 30s/40s with layering. Great, no insulation wind proof, quiet gear!
Gonna try this, might suck might not, gonna buy a camo sleeping bag to get into in my climber. Thinking i can pull it up to my armpits basically. Gonna take small trash bags to put on feet to help slip in/keep bag dry. Gonna be a low of 17 in PA on Monday
Yeah i looked at some. All of them seemed pretty pricey and my wife will kill me spending a bunch this close to Christmas. I figured if I can get a sleeping bag for 50-100 bucks and like it i can upgrade next year. And a sleepingbag seems like it would be easy to get out of to pee.

I had the same set up when I was a kid. Had a red square of cloth pinned to my back so I wouldnt get shot. Now I have great clothes and heated gloves and socks. Same thing ice fishing. No more riding a bucket I have a flip over and a heater. Thats what happens when the kids grow up and move out. 😂. Love your videos
I got tired of having so many layers of carhartt sweatshirts and jackets that I couldn't hardly shoulder my gun. Switched to merino wool base layers with a combo of first light and code of silence outer wear and I have yet to need my jacket or bibs in central mn . Stuff is incredible

😂 She is a machine! Crazy thing is that was the exactly the buck she was after yesterday. I sent her a pic of that buck with a red dot suggesting where to aim at 200-250 yards, and she shot him at 235 yards, 3 hours later 😊 Proud of her! Only this buck took only 2 sits for her...the last one 35, lol. Pretty dang awesome!
This is not true id rather be chilly than hot the heat puts off more body odor and steam. To test this theory go out and hunt when it’s below freezing right before the sun is up and get all hot on the way in. You’ll notice the heat boiling out of your clothes and guess what, the deer can smell that you can sometimes even watch it drift off with the breeze. I agree with most of what this guy says but the whole “stay hot” is setting you guys up to get winded and blowed out. I bring my heavy clothes packed on the way in with just enough on me that I don’t shiver cold. Then once I get to my blind or stand I put on the heavy’s. That’s been my favorite method to date.
I do the same. I can usually find a secluded spot nearby the stand/blind/where I want to sit to put on the heavier clothing where I don't worry too much about deer coming across it and catching my scent. If I wore all my clothing on the walk in I'd be swimming in sweat, I don't know how far Jeff walks, but I often hike a good mile to where I'm going to sit and I'm usually comfortable in a thin sweatshirt and pants while moving. It's when I stop moving that staying warm becomes an issue.
I hate to be critical of this “stay warm” advice, but I have too. I have used the layered method for over 45 years in northern Michigan’s brutal winter,s only to find that by the time I get to my stand I am sweating like Hillary Clinton in front of the grand jury. I still use two layers for my head but for the rest of my body, I hunt in the exact clothes that I use in mid-October. I simply add one item. My Milwaukee cordless hunting vest. I keep it turned off until I get in my stand and start to cool off from the walk. When I start to get filled I push a button and within 3-5 minutes. it feels like I’ve slid into a hot tub. Our whole hunting group (approx 25) have adopted this method and there’s no going back. Once you progress to this method you will never look like the Michelin man ever again, and you won’t be exhausted after you walk back to your car. Layering is always a suitable plan B, but if you can pick yourself up a heated vest or jacket, you will be toasty toasty. Jeff, we love your channel so much and your advice has advanced my big buck success tremendously. USE THE NEW TECHNOLOGY if you can afford to. For the same reason you use an electric bike (benefits are many) use battery clothing. Kevin
Ok advice on the battery stuff...BUT, if you hunt long hours. If survival is important. You have to learn how to dress and only use batteries as a compliment to smart dressing. Unfortunately the batt ties don't last long enough for some of our coldest hunting opportunities...

Kings camo has a awesome bib set with a thick fleece pullover with the huge pocket..500 normally and I just got it for 220.
We hunt way back in the Adirondacks,lots of hiking ,I brings extra Tee-shirts,helps big time.

Once I get to stand, Big wool sock pulled over outside of boot tips with a hot hands pouch shoved in at top, toes never get cold!

I bought a two pocket pouch with an adjustable strap, put in small or large size warmers in slots then turn around and cover kidneys ( wear a shirt) and what a difference it makes. Someone who knows how to sew can make one.
I’ve got a big question…this is the first season I’m running Sitka and I love it already. We’re from PA and deal with damp, humid cold. Quite frankly it cuts thru layers pretty quick. Sitka has neck gaiters/face masks sown into the hoods on the Fanatic and the Traverse hoody, both coats of which I can speak highly of. I love having the Fanatic hoody gaiter up on my face, combined with the low pro hat for early season. The concealment is awesome too. However, the issue I run into is that when it’s cold, the material gets damp from my breath and doesn’t wick as well, and then it’s colder than just having nothing at all on my face.
I’ve had this happen with other brands of hoodies, and even my Serius neck gaiter which is actually a very soft fleece material. That actually got frosty one year 😅 anyway any suggestions?

Jeff, i have about 40 acres full of mature oak trees that produce very well every year but there’s so much honeysuckle that the deer never have to leave the cover to eat other then entering and exiting crop fields here in northern Indiana. How do I decided to take out cover without taking out to much cover?

What might be wrong with my property? Opening weekend gun season in northern Wisconsin...fawns all over my 40 acres all day long everywhere. However, not a single mature doe or set of antlers seen the whole time.
Dead does? Also no primary rut left. Button bucks left. Doe family groups and bucks move to FOOD right now. High quality food. And mature bucks will move 5 times further to find it.

My biggest problem is my feet. When they get cold I’m done and for some reason I cannot find warm enough boots. I’m wearing merino wool socks, and a 2000gm insulated rubber boot and below 20degrees my feet tend to freeze. I’ve tried everything. Heated socks (battery packs don’t last). Hot/toasty toes warmers, (didnt work either). Just don’t know what to use now.
I'll tell you what worked for me. I could never find a regular boot that would keep my feet warm longer than maybe an hour in 20F or lower. I heard this from a guy and kind of tweaked things to my liking. It's a 4-layer system.
1. Thin Alpaca sock. (Take your choice of brand, I wear Pacas mostly).
2. Thicker wool sock (I prefer woolpower 800s)
3. Down Booties (I use Fjallraven, but there's lots of options)
4. Boot Blanket (I got mine from Grey Wolf Woolens, but again you have lots of options.
If this alone isn't enough for you, you can toss a handwarmer inside the booties because they're more loose fitting and breathable so the handwarmer can work, unlike in a normal boot.
Mind you, this combo only works if you're going to be sitting still, you can't really walk around. But if you're planning on sitting on-stand or on the ground for 8+hours I've never had anything work better. I also thrown down a thin $5 foam seat cushion to rest my feet on instead of putting them directly on a cold steel stand that sucks the heat right out of them.
Other option is my dad swears by the Heater Body Suit....though I've never tried it myself.
If you start sweating walking out to where you're going to hunt. How does that affect your scent.
Not too much at all...we never hunt without playing the wind 😊

Love my Sitka as far as warmth but the camo sucks. May end up goin with first lite just alittle scared of it not being as warm
Let's put it this way...the thermic is DEFINITELY warmer than the Fanatic, And I feel fits better and more intuitive Hunting features. The Core is a great all around fit, but not as warm as the Fanatic....which is a good thing. We also wear the phase down to in the high 30s/40s with layering. Great, no insulation wind proof, quiet gear!
How about a Mr. buddy? Or heated clothing?
Concentrate on your head, hand and feet. If you can keep them warm most the time your good to go. You lose most your heat out of your head.
Gonna try this, might suck might not, gonna buy a camo sleeping bag to get into in my climber. Thinking i can pull it up to my armpits basically. Gonna take small trash bags to put on feet to help slip in/keep bag dry. Gonna be a low of 17 in PA on Monday

Yeah i looked at some. All of them seemed pretty pricey and my wife will kill me spending a bunch this close to Christmas. I figured if I can get a sleeping bag for 50-100 bucks and like it i can upgrade next year. And a sleepingbag seems like it would be easy to get out of to pee.

I had the same set up when I was a kid. Had a red square of cloth pinned to my back so I wouldnt get shot. Now I have great clothes and heated gloves and socks. Same thing ice fishing. No more riding a bucket I have a flip over and a heater. Thats what happens when the kids grow up and move out. 😂. Love your videos

I got tired of having so many layers of carhartt sweatshirts and jackets that I couldn't hardly shoulder my gun. Switched to merino wool base layers with a combo of first light and code of silence outer wear and I have yet to need my jacket or bibs in central mn . Stuff is incredible

I put a sticky hand warmer on my lower back against first layer keeping those kidneys warm. When you lean against your tree or whatever you can feel that warmth. And yes put hand warmer in plastic baggy shuts it off, if it’s the 18 hour kind you can almost get 3 uses out of depending how long you sit each time. 🏹🦌🌲⛺️⛰️

😂 She is a machine! Crazy thing is that was the exactly the buck she was after yesterday. I sent her a pic of that buck with a red dot suggesting where to aim at 200-250 yards, and she shot him at 235 yards, 3 hours later 😊 Proud of her! Only this buck took only 2 sits for her...the last one 35, lol. Pretty dang awesome!

This is not true id rather be chilly than hot the heat puts off more body odor and steam. To test this theory go out and hunt when it’s below freezing right before the sun is up and get all hot on the way in. You’ll notice the heat boiling out of your clothes and guess what, the deer can smell that you can sometimes even watch it drift off with the breeze. I agree with most of what this guy says but the whole “stay hot” is setting you guys up to get winded and blowed out. I bring my heavy clothes packed on the way in with just enough on me that I don’t shiver cold. Then once I get to my blind or stand I put on the heavy’s. That’s been my favorite method to date.
I do the same. I can usually find a secluded spot nearby the stand/blind/where I want to sit to put on the heavier clothing where I don't worry too much about deer coming across it and catching my scent.
If I wore all my clothing on the walk in I'd be swimming in sweat, I don't know how far Jeff walks, but I often hike a good mile to where I'm going to sit and I'm usually comfortable in a thin sweatshirt and pants while moving. It's when I stop moving that staying warm becomes an issue.
I hate to be critical of this “stay warm” advice, but I have too. I have used the layered method for over 45 years in northern Michigan’s brutal winter,s only to find that by the time I get to my stand I am sweating like Hillary Clinton in front of the grand jury. I still use two layers for my head but for the rest of my body, I hunt in the exact clothes that I use in mid-October. I simply add one item. My Milwaukee cordless hunting vest. I keep it turned off until I get in my stand and start to cool off from the walk. When I start to get filled I push a button and within 3-5 minutes. it feels like I’ve slid into a hot tub. Our whole hunting group (approx 25) have adopted this method and there’s no going back. Once you progress to this method you will never look like the Michelin man ever again, and you won’t be exhausted after you walk back to your car. Layering is always a suitable plan B, but if you can pick yourself up a heated vest or jacket, you will be toasty toasty. Jeff, we love your channel so much and your advice has advanced my big buck success tremendously. USE THE NEW TECHNOLOGY if you can afford to. For the same reason you use an electric bike (benefits are many) use battery clothing. Kevin
Ok advice on the battery stuff...BUT, if you hunt long hours. If survival is important. You have to learn how to dress and only use batteries as a compliment to smart dressing. Unfortunately the batt ties don't last long enough for some of our coldest hunting opportunities...
