    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Carlson (Richard Riehle) bullies Candy (Ray Walston) and says he wants to shoot and kill his old dog.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Gary Sinese directed this respectful re-telling of John Steinbeck's classic novel, with Sinese as the wily George and John Malkovich as the brutish, simple-minded Lennie. Set during the Depression era, the film opens as George and Lennie are running from a woman with a torn dress, who has sent a gang of ruffians to chase the two out of the county. After a long bus ride and a ten-mile walk, George and Lennie arrive at a migrant farm in California's San Joaquin Valley, where they seek work. George dreams of putting together enough money to buy a small piece of land where he and Lennie can build a home; he hopes that in California the two can realize their dream. Unfortunately, the foreman of the ranch, Curley (Casey Siemaszko), enjoys tormenting Lennie, while Curley's frustrated wife (Sherilyn Fenn) entices Lennie with her sexual allure. George warns Lennie to steer clear of Curley's wife, but Lennie follows her to a barn where a tragedy occurs and George and Lennie's dreams are shattered.

      I feel sorry for that entire town. Out of the goodness of his heart, some guy takes pity on Lenny because he's mentally challenged, and this is the Great Depression when work is scarce and wages are dirt. Most Americans are struggling, and there are few comforts to be had. Then, when work is through, and everybody else is unwinding, the "unsupervised" Lenny, who has the curiosity of a toddler, hangs out in a barn, where he's prone to accidentally kill some poor animal or "person", because he doesn't know his own strength. As a kid, I remember being angry with the lynch mob that was determined to execute Lenny. As an adult, I have more empathy for these people. When would Lenny have stopped killing people and animals? There weren't many mental institutions during the Great Depression, and the few that existed were often filthy, and poorly regulated. Many patients with Lenny's condition were lobotomized.

      Alex Beddow dylan jarrett I don't think it's exactly in the same way.Carlson kills the dog because he thinks that the dog is a burden. George kills Lennie because he wants to protect him from himself and because he loves him. It's foreshadowed in the book when Candy tells George that he wished he could have shot his dog himself, because the dog was his.

    • @ABEPIC
      @ABEPIC 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean as in same method of death both shot in back of head like in carlsons description on how was going to kill the dog and at end when George shoots lennie in back of head

    • @WhatIsGoingOnEreThen
      @WhatIsGoingOnEreThen 10 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Alex Beddow The foreshadowing isn't that difficult to spot, to quote the book:
      Carlson:"i'll shoot him, he wont even quiver"
      then later in the book when Lennie dies:
      "lennie settled in the sand without quivering"
      There's obviously a link there on purpose by Steinbeck.
      Don't forget in the book Candy turns to Carlson out of hope and says
      "You ain't got no gun" out of desperate hope, and when carlson goes to get his gun to shoot Lennie, George out of desperation says "maybe you lost it". Both cases are the character, be it George or candy trying to save there loved one from the inevitable.

    When I first read this book in Modern Literature, I highly empathized with Candy, because at the same time, I had an older dog (half yorkie, half dachshund) who got cancer. Dad suggested I put her down, but I wouldn't do it because she still had enough strength to eat, drink, and walk around, she was just really thirsty and frequently incontinent. So I put her in diapers, and faithfully took care of her, until she died naturally in her sleep. Mom's touched by my kindness for our dog...

    if you think about it it's kinda like Lennie. *spoiler alert* they were gonna shoot Lennie in the gut, which would of made him suffer, so George shoots Lennie in the back of the head so its pretty much instant death. The dog is killed so it doesn't suffer, and so is Lennie.

    This scene is heart breaking. Candys dog is old but it doesn't mean it deserved to die. If the dog was suffering then they didn't portray it well in the film. Poor Candy was looking for one soul to speak up on his dogs behalf. I hate watching this scene. I weep for both Candy and his dog. Poor old man has no other comfort in this world. I mean I suppose in those times and in that situation a bullet to the back of its head would of been more humane than suffering but I just didnt like how eager he was to kill it. You can see the heartbreak all over Candys face.

    We're studying this for GCSE lit, and I really love the use of foreshadowing! There are some obvious things, like the connection between Candy's dog and Lennie, but also the more subtle ones I only noticed when rereading each chapter. For example, when George warns Lennie that Curley's wife will be trouble, and then she ends up being the reason Lennie dies, and how Lennie seems to kill things in size order, starting with a mouse, then a puppy, and then a person. I wouldn't say my class is exactly the most mature, but quite a few people did cry a bit when Lennie died. I have to admit, my eyes were a little damp :.(

    People saying the dog was suffering and that it was right to kill it miss the point of this completely. When Candy discusses putting up the money for the little place with George and Lenny he realises that there is another option for himself rather than just waiting for the man to dispense of his services. The dog could have gone to the small holding with him and there wouldn't have been any discussion about getting rid of it for inconvenience.

      xXSilentAgent47Xx Candy is like George and the dog is like Lennie. Lennie, like the dog, is loving, faithful, and is basically George's best friend, but he's too simple and causes more trouble and will the older he gets. Carlson represents George's mind telling him that it would be better for everyone, even Lennie, if he wasn't around anymore which later in the book he does end up killing Lennie for his own good. By contrasting the antagonist (Carlson) with the protagonist (George), it makes Lennie's loss more emotional.

    In the book, Carlson in this scene came off more as stern and a bit mean but not cruel. He was gentle and caring when he led the dog out to put him down.
    I knew putting Candy’s dog down was the right choice because the poor old thing was suffering and I understand Candy’s reluctance because he’s bonded with the pooch since he was a pup but he knew and I knew everyone was right in the decision to put the poor elderly pooch out of his misery.

      Adam Hoffman It does, a Luger was a trophy hunting weapon meant to kill targets with speed and power, additionally the Luger is German, how did he get it? It shows a lot about Carlson’s past.

    Ok In all fairness, the poor dog did look like it was greatly suffering in its old age, so it MAY have been the right thing to do in the long run, but pressuring and effectively bullying old candy into the decision was just wrong and cruel. It was handled completely the wrong way. Always feel so sorry for him and his old dog 😞😞😞

    Steinbeck used this scene as a foreshadowing device to tell us that the same situation will happen again but with George and Lennie. Nicely done but it's really sad. :(

  • @hawksnebula1506
    @hawksnebula1506 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Where's the Luger, that looks like a standard revolver? I know its not a crucial element of the story but the Luger is useful in conveying the similarities of Candy's dog and Lennie's eventual death, surely?

  • @noahwayjose6191
    @noahwayjose6191 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    When Candy says “I couldn’t let a stranger shoot my dog. I ougtta shot that dog myself.” It was a metaphor. George thought it’d be better for him to shoot Lenny. So he wasn’t scared or sad or angry and that he was with someone he loved.

      @@StevenRottmannIII Ty yeah this comment is from four years ago when I was in secondary school studying it and I had a dog called Barney who was my best friend in the whole world and it was at this time he was getting older and weaker and when I was 17 he died. So seeing an old dog get shot especially when my old dog was my best friend really shook me up because it almost foreshadowed what was going to happen to mine. My dog wasn’t shot but the vet put him down because he was too ill to keep going sadly. 😢
