    Another great review Efka! It's nice to see another high-profile board-game reviewer embrace a miniature war game in the way it was intended - with all of the collecting/building/painting/scenery side of things. However, next time please don't post it at 2am as I was just about to go to sleep and was forced to stay up for an extra 21 minutes! (PS my rebels are ready for that re-match whenever you are) :D

    That part about half of the minis being unpainted was so god damned relatable :D I basically only painted my vehicles and Luke and Vader fully, while the troopers...well, let's not talk about that…

    I invested in Imperial Assault. As much as I want to start this, I can't. I don't have the income for it unfortunately to start a new game. Imperial Assualt Skrimish mode is really good, and I enjoy playing it. I can always increase the point size, and get a bigger scale map to match up with legion massive scale.

    You did it again! You took a game that I had no interest in and made a video that I was glad I watched. Both Efka and Elaine put a lot of time and effort into funny and thoughtful reviews of the games.
    (For the record, you cover games I'm interested in, too, I just wanted to highlight how you can make something that I thought I had no interest in enjoyable.) Keep up the great work!

    Update: you can now get Boba Fett, Bossk, and tauntauns, so the unexciting releases problem is not an issue any more. Besides, Stormtroopers actually increase in awesomeness the more of them you have! Great review!

    Great review as ever. You mention needing someone to play with, I just wanted to say you can generally find pick up games in stores and events to play at. So you get to play the game and meet new people (worth checking your local area ofc though).

      There's hardly a time/effort investment nowadays IMO. It's not early GW days anymore, people have come up with specialised paints and time saving techniques since then (thanks, internet!). You can paint a miniature in a few minutes using those, I've even made some tutorials myself.

    • @elizabethlestrad5282

      Agree. Especially after what FFG has proven itself capable of providing through Armada and X-Wing. There’s no reason these could not have come pre-painted.

    Honestly, Efka, your minis look quite good for a beginner! And you're right, the investment in time and effort and love and care is one of the most rewarding parts of miniature games.
    You should try Guild Ball, I think. Guild Ball's Kickoff box set is like Legion's starter set in that it's a miniature game pretending to be a board game, but unlike others in the category Kickoff is actually the full Guild Ball experience. All the other products are just different teams you could play as, or different characters you could substitute in to customize your team because you only ever put 6 characters on each side of the pitch. This also makes painting a bit easier, since there are fewer models, and each model is a unique character model like Vader as opposed to having squads of infantry to paint. And the gameplay is, well, exquisite - it's one of the smartest games I've ever played. You should check it out if you feel so inclined, it's the best game ever made that lets you bring a shotgun to a football match.

    Another wonderful review. You've actually got me tempted to try this with my 13 yr old daughter as she's a big Star Wars fan as our first miniatures based war game (also first war game), what would be the absolute bare minimum needed to have an enjoyable experience, in terms of sets?

    • @NoPunIncluded
      @NoPunIncluded  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oooph, tough question. I'd say at least get an AT-ST and the Air Speeder respectively for each side. They're big dumb units and fun to play around with. Maybe an extra unit of Troops (whichever ones, doesn't matter) for Rebels to even out the army point scores.

    Hands down the best gateway miniatures game right now is Gaslands. the only thing you have to do is buy the cheap rulebook and a few hot wheels cars, which are already painted. If you want to go further that's up to you.

    Nice painting - as for good miniature games - try Moonstone (Goblin King Games) or Bushido (GCT studios). Bushido is quite intense, but if you ignore the objective, you will loose. Moonstone uses card mechanics beautifully -like bluffing and an engaging combat mechanic with some similarity to rock paper scissors , but with mitigation... both top notch games with wonderful settings and minis.

    I'm in an odd place. I came to gaming through 40K. I still collect and play Kill Team, Warcry, Bolt Action, Black Seas, X-Wing.. (I don't know anyone who measures every mini, measure one and move the rest cohesively). I'm a big Staw Wars fan. I never fancied this for some reason. Maybe my addiction to the plastic crack is already sated.
    I'm also a big board games fan/player. It is very disturbing that a lot of game review channels look down on tabletop games. Comes across as a kind of snobbery. Nice to see a game like this given time and a bit of respect.
    Yes, my life is the constant yin-yang of uplifting, chest swelling painted minis and soul crushing bare grey plastic.

    Great Review, agree with all your key points apart from objectives, if playing a full 800 point game objectives normally dictate the outcome, I think I have only had one 800 point game where a player was tabled before victory count. I have also seen early conceded victorys where a player has calculated the cannot catch up on VPs.
    Great review though, your passion matches mine and while game time is pretty quick, this is a big hobby to get into if you dare to paint them,

    • @robertchmielecki2580
      @robertchmielecki2580 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, wargames don't hold palyer's hands, telling them which models buy or not. They are open systems in this aspect. You can go "I only want to play small skirmishes with my wife when we have a spare moment" through "As a tournamnet player I need only a standard sized tournament force and I am done" to "I love huge multiplayer battles with my friends, using hundreds of models on a huge battlefield and taking up an entire day to play" and "I need a constant stream of new things to paint, to keep the hobbying going". All those are viable options, neither of them "the only proper way to play the game"

    • @Paint_to_play

    Thanks for the review! Among the best miniature wargames you have ever played ? That sounds impressive :) What other such games have you played, Efka ?
    Do you have experience with Warmachine or Guildball (which I consider the preferred style of wargame - much less random, with a lot of player agency and decision making as opposed to GW games which feel more like "let's roll dice and see what happens" cheerful affairs)?

      No Pun Included Definitely we have a lot of choice now :)
      One one hand it's a good thing, on the other I've experienced gaming communities splitting. I notice it with my regular board games group too - we used to play and enjoy whatever really, when we were younger, but now one of us wants a hefty euro, another a campaign adventure, and another some solid military conflict...and as a result some of us skip meetings orconstantly voice their dissatisfaction with the game chosen...
      Yeah, too much choice can be a bad thing. I kind of miss those innocent days, when Talisman was the best game in the universe...because there were no other games to compare it to ;)

    Great video though.

  • @SheezyBites
    @SheezyBites 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    At the end of the day making these miniatures means playing with toys and bringing them to life... and storm troopers do make good toys, but the rebels are pretty poor. As much as Ewoks, Gungans and Droideka aren't great for movies they were made with one thing in mind, selling toys, and in miniature games you need good toys. If we get an Ewok army, or Gungans, even Jawas with Tuskan Raiders and hacked droid armies or anything else that actually looks fun to collect, I'll be there, but there is no way to make collecting a bunch of rebels an exciting prospect, and only so much you can do before stormtroopers get old.
    Seriously, have you seen all the nonsense on Jabba The Hut's barge? This game should be a fountain of exciting miniatures, but it's just all the most boring dudes imaginable.
    I just want a Rancor damnit!

      Guess what? Every video has a budget! And this video's budget, believe it or not, was stupendously high. You just might not see it. Paints - over £100 pounds. Extra mini packs - roughly £150 pounds. GW cardboard desert board - £50. 3d printed 'Tatooine' buildings - £100. Kylo Ren mask - £7.50 for a train ticket to pick it up from my friend who kindly lent it. Other videos might have different expenses such as props, travel, paying someone for help, etc. Then, factor in the per video cost of all the gear purchased such as cameras, lights, stands, editing software and suddenly it's not a very LOL matter.
