  • Sometimes Helga's dreams felt so real that crossing the boundary of sleep in either direction was like stepping through a door and suddenly arriving in a different place. This time, her disorientation was worse because she didn't remember lying down and didn't recognize the room in which she found herself. She blinked at wood beams arching gracefully above the bed, tightly woven walls, golden sunlight slanting through pretty patchwork curtains, and wondered if she was still asleep.

Redwall is very similar. If you haven't yet read it. Small animals living their lives, but also being brave.

I absolutely love how reminiscent this is of Brian Jacques’ books, both in themes and style. Massive feelings of nostalgia!

This story is amazing, the slice of life vibe coursing through this otherwise pretty standard narration, the communal way of living of the critters all helping each other warms my heart almost as much as all the descriptions of the foods and of the inhabitants of the valley!
And today we got so much lore, I want to see the drought snake so bad

Honestly, this chapter kind of illustrates my problem with forcing multiple POVs into an already pretty cramped story. We really should have spent some time establishing the members of Mabel's little party. Why do they, specifically, want to join the quest? How does it impact them, personally? And what sort of arcs might they go through? But we didn't have time to set any of them up because we instead had to follow Helga for a bit, and then watch Ral doing Ral things - neither of which felt particularly necessary. Assuming this will be the usual five chapters that Magic stories usually get, we're 40% of the way through the story and things have only just finished being set up - and yet it still feels like not enough has actually been set up. The world is very cool, and there's certainly some neat description - but the fact that none of the characters we'll be following, save for Helga and Mabel herself, had so much as a single line of dialogue before setting out on the quest makes it hard to be invested in any of them. It doesn't feel like a scrappy band of heroes off on an epic quest to save their world - it feels like an established hero setting off with a bunch of random faces who just happened to raise their hands when she asked for volunteers.

As much as you are right, even on the details, I feel like your criticism would fit a lot better if this stories pretended to make up a full novel. They dont.
Being the lore for a stand-alone MTG set is a limitation unto itself, that prevents from developing characters and story arcs in a natural way. Yes, the party joining Mabel could all be interesting characters with rich backgrounds, wants and dreams, you could even form a party dynamic with how their personalities clash and mix, but no, this was written so they represent a card. So the readers and listeners can say "Oh Hugs the badger! Yeah I remember his card, he ramps and exiles stuff, so this is where he is from, neat! Oh, hohoho they made him huge in the story, no wonder he is a 5/5". That is the objective of this stories, to a degree, its advertising. It disgusts me to recognise that because I love the stories of Magic but we have to remember, they exists thanks to a product.
It goes the same way with the plot, It will probably be rushed. As you said, here we just finished the setting and are about 40% in. And I think part of that is because the plot has to rush to those particular moments depicted in relevant cards. Again, if that is the case, it sucks, and this whole story is recieving a lot less love and respect than it deserves, but this is all to give cohesion and sense to a product.
Now, one could argue that a good enough story for a set deserves to be worked and published into an actual novel. It would be nice, right? Yeah... my copy of War of the Spark by Greg Weisman is acumulating dust in my room, and it deserves worse punishment. Wizards. Fucked. Up. And they will not try that again soon.
So yeah, im with you, but we have to recognise that this stories, good, great even, exciting and heartwarming, are constrained by the context and purpose that created them in the first place. So, I say lets apreciate them for what they are allowed to be. Fun as heck.

@@villa3927 I absolutely agree. Thing is though, I'm of the opinion that you need to tell the story that your medium allows. If you're stuck with a medium that doesn't have enough room for an epic world-saving quest with a party of seven characters, then you shouldn't TRY to tell a a story about an epic world-saving quest with a party of seven characters. If you only have X amount of space, then you should craft a story that fits in that space, rather than trying to force something bigger into a medium that doesn't allow it.
I also want to clarify that none of my criticisms are levelled towards the writers themselves. Obviously I don't know what exactly goes on on the inside, but I have little doubt that most of the problems are due to WotC themselves telling the writers what needs to be included, while not giving them enough space to do it well. I'm sure they do the best they can with what they're given - my criticisms are more about WotC telling them to do too much and not giving them the space they need to do it (again, obviously I can't know for sure that's what's happening, but given WotC's track record it would not surprise me in the least).
Also, despite my criticisms, I do want to say that this story is probably the best one we've seen in years. Yeah, it's not great, it has a lot of problems, but damn it's a stark improvement from basically anything we've seen since the Origins soft reboot. It's the first one since then that I've actually WANTED to read through to the end, despite my complaints.
On a somewhat separate note, I feel like WotC learned the wrong lesson from War of the Spark (WotC learning the wrong lesson from something? Shocking, I know). They released a crappy, rushed, unsatisfying novel, people panned it for being crappy, rushed and unsatisfying, and their takeaway was that people don't like novels. My own somewhat hot take is that while War was certainly bad, it wasn't especially bad compared to what came before it - its biggest crime was that they made you pay for the same low quality. People will forgive a lot when it's free. Of course, that's an entirely separate conversation.
I also reject the notion that a story's flaws can be excused with "It's just advertising". Quality and purpose are not linked; a story created for the purposes of advertising a set can still be good, if they allowed it to be. But again, that's kind of another conversation.

@@ArixOdragc I very much respect and share your points, and have no doubt that the writers of this stories not only do their best with the orders they are given, I truly think they put heart into it. As for WOTC. yeah, they learned the wrong lessons and continue to be greedy about their projects (oh wow, who would’ve guessed).
I listened to the Bloomburrow story up to chapter 4 just yesterday and so far, its not just good and interesting. Its lovely, filled with people’s honest feelings of apreciation for their homes and family amidst a challenging situation. They managed to make the words feel like a cozy evening of cuddles in front of a firepalce, and snuck in some good old fantasy awesomeness while they were at it. Im liking it very much. It may not last for long, but I hope you and I get to enjoy the feeling while it lasts, and be thankfull it happened. n_n

@@villa3927 I've read the whole thing so far too, and so far I feel about it much the same way I feel about most of Magic's stories - the setting and worldbuilding are great, the characters for the most part are just kind of inoffensively there, and the plot is a bit of a rushed mess. That said though, while I really can't say I love it, I'm enjoying it well enough that I do actually want to finish it, which is more than I can say for basically any other story Magic's done over the past decade odd.
None of that, of course, to say that anyone else is wrong for liking it! I'm definitely not out here to yuck anyone's yum, I just like talking storytelling.
