    Octave bass is how that rising tension is achieved in "Docking" tune of Interstellar in fact.

    Thank Mr Kraft I am good at my 3 note Techno Bass lines with my 909 for 90's tracks , but got stuck on my 80's synth pop always loved all of those bands 🎉The Pet Shop Boys are so underrated 🎉 I thought I heard some Propganda in there

    Those are great examples. I would recommend using the walking bass in Billie Jean, one of the best riffs ever for bass.

    I would consider myself to be pretty good at synth basslines and I think the important thing is having a DEEP understanding of basslines other than synth. The best tip I can give is to try to understand basslines in a lot of different genres and then translate it over. Or just get to a point where you can play disco and funk basslines 😂... If you can do those then you can do anything

    Love this. Don't know why, but it is in my nature to track the bassline first on any track I listen to for the first couple of times. Then the chord progression. Perhaps I should've learnt bass guitar instead of synths.

    beautiful! so inspiring.. especially that "single note trick", I didn't realize it was "allowed" to play anything outside the chord, but then I remember hearing that same thing on PSB's Love Comes Quickly and it sure was effective in that track! I think it's the idea of not being afraid to do things wrong and experiment that's so liberating..

    I remember the challenges of going from playing the bass lines on a bass guitar to the synth. It took me a while but the music inspiration helped. Your "Kraft"smanship makes me envious. Years of dedication, no doubt.

    Fascinating! I’m going to try some of these later. I liked that you mentioned Pet Shop Boys at the top of the video. I’m reminded of someone that said that a musical cue from Inspector Gadget, “Penny’s Theme” or “Look Out” sounded an awful lot like “Domino Dancing”. I listened to them back to back and saw their point. Of course, for “Penny’s Theme”, I could only get that sound by using a Jupiter 8 bass type patch with a little overdrive and a tremolo. Seems to work. The stabs on the upbeats gives it a bounciness to it. That cue happens when Penny and Brain solve the case.
    I enjoy videos like this. Keep up the good stuff. 👍👍

    Definitely interesting. I'm not brilliant at writing basslines, but I enjoy trying. If in doubt, I just keep it simple and unremarkable.

    I like inspiration from bass guitar lines for synth bass lines. Single and multiple triggering and legato glide make for some great slap and fretless variations.

    Nice video, Into the groove is one of my favorite bass lines ever, as well as Nights on broadway.
    Other simple but great ones are Like a virgin (the story behind it is great as well), Take my breath away, Somebody's watching me, Billy Jean...

    Hi Espen Kraft, thanks for this insightful video. I would much prefer synth heads make more videos like this about how to play the keyboards rather than the endless vintage synth reviews. Guitarists have so much content on how to actually play the dang thing but there's barely anything like that for us keyboard players. I would love more videos about melodies scales chords, chord progressions etc. Thanks

      Thanks! I layer and make my own drums, from samples I make of old drum machines. I have all the necessary samples (to make this) in my sample pack "The Ultimate Italo Disco / Synth-Pop Sample Pack".
