- In This Tech-Tip I give a report on an issue that is surfacing concerning a potential flaw in the shaft attachment to the Minlab Vanquish control box.

Only when we see other brands coming with (budget) MF detectors Minelab will do something about their build quality. Love the performance hate the build quality.

Well here you can see the Air pockets in the Plastic .. Thats a quality control issue.. Over and Over, keep cutting corners!
Mines a damn good machine my 440 but you’re not used as a walking cane or a baseball bat and you won’t have a problem with it
Broken plastic Sucks, Joey. I had a Garrett GTA1000 many years ago, and it was among of the first few made, in a similar design. The handle was two piece. Left and right side, bonded together under the rubber grip. I snapped the bond within a few months of detecting, and the whole thing flopped around like a wet noodle. While under warranty, I sent it back to Garrett for repair. I received it with a totally updated handle you could not break. ML should redesign it.
I love when a company is willing to send out an updated remedy instead of merely fixing it.. I appreciate the fix but i dont want it to keep happening if you know what I mean
Sounds like you could have been arrested for indecent exposure the way you described your incident.
Yup, broke the handle just like that falling over a log! I moved the handle onto the main shaft. Crazy glue didn't work! Minelab told me to get a hold of Minelab America but i'm in Canada and they don't service them...and how could they fix it anyway...I want another one...but hey i did what i could...i love the Vanquish!! Great video mate, thanks for pointing that out, it's definitely something to be aware of, it makes converting to the CMD carbon fibre straight shaft much more appealing now but even so treat your machine well and it should not break 🤞🤞 but yeah, Minelab should have put more thought into the design.

Damn Joey I keep telling you man this week all you’ve been doing this last week or two bass in my lap and about you don’t think they’re going to war to get the stuff I can tell you’re not done told you three or four times they will warranty it as long as it’s under warranty OK that’s what the warranty means and they will warranty it they do have good customer service they’re not like that they don’t charge all that money for the metal detectors and didn’t wanna screw you they want your business again they don’t they don’t wanna screw you Man and I met got so much money in there that the elite metal detector company they made billions of dollars man believe me and they will replace it if you they would’ve replaced your metal shaft if you wanted a metal chef they were replaced by metal shaft but I didn’t want another aluminum shaft I got me a carbon fiber from Steve detectors and I’m happy with the one I got I built mine my equinox 600 I got itI got a carbon fiber shaft and I got there they’re also bad about breaking the coil specially if you get the bigger coil you put on your metal detector that the stiffened and that comes with it is it the strongest I bought my own off the Internet it’s wider and covers more of the ears and more of the coil so it supports difference it makes it a hell of a lot stronger so I gotta do better stiffener that I bought online I think it cost me 13 bucks it was well worth that it’s longer and wider and bigger than the one that come on it and it’s different it right up but I’d like I said I book I built mine I put aluminum cup on the end you know where you said your flipped over in the car and broke and I’m more than happy with myAnd I agree with you did they all that money you spend you wouldn’t you shouldn’t have to spend that extra money they should put a good shaft on it and a good strong coil stiffener there were the mirrors won’t break off I agree with everything you say even without the cup for the for your elbow but you can buy different stuff and build build build it like you want it you shouldn’t have to spend extra money for all the money you pay for it I agree but I built mine and I got mine for an open box pop I bought it for open box and got it cheaper so that’s why I could afford to build mine like I wanted and I’m I’m just tickled and happy as can be with mine now that I got it built like I want it I wouldn’t have nothing else but my main lab equinox and I have a 440 vanquished to what they were warranty anything you sent back as long as it’s under warranty no problems I promise youIf you’re mine labs under warranty you show me that it’s under warranty and that they did not a warranty your stuff and I’ll I’ll I’ll buy it from you I’ll give you your money back because I know for a fact that they will warrantee it if it’s under warranty I mean if it’s four years old it’s not under warranty but if it’s under warranty dude and they don’t and they don’t want to get you show me that it’s under warranty and out and I’ll I’ll buy it off you I’ll pay your money back for it because that’s how confident I am that they did they do warranty their stuff my lap and I’m on mine lab person as you can tell that’s my favorite detector I have a Symplex on the way and that’s gonna be my go with number three metal detector to go to my equinox is my all round metal detector beach bar woods feels parks and I’m just gonna use the Saint works for Parts and carbsI think With is going to be for a beach only so I got the vehicles for the beach only and I’m gonna have a Symplex for parks and in Carberry is because my buddy uses my old house is where they’re parking curbs out by the road and find all kinds of coins and I’m gonna use my equinox which you know you can use that anymore feels parks beaches that’s gonna be my all around metal detector Symplex for the parks and the vanquish for the beach directly but with the with the equinox so I can use it anywhere so that’s all I’m buying I’m not buying a legend I’m gonna keep the three I got right here and I’m gonna do like you do I’m gonna put it in the rack and every day when I metal detecting I’m gonna grab a different metal detector dislike he was talking about so they get used
Are you doing here lately Joey breaking metal detectors and showing you how people there the metal detector companies might not warrant him and stuff and and deliberately breaking up or what I never seen nobody had that problem with vanquish I have one and I’m sure if it broke the warranty if it was under warranty but that one you got right there look like you slammed it up against the wall
Thanks for sharing this video. I heard someone snapped it right there and that minelab replaced the whole detector.. Now I am also going to say NOt sure if that info came from a reliable person.
Hey Dan as long as Minelab is willing to fix it under warranty.. No complaints from me.. Just want people to be careful of the possibility
I sent minelab the photo of mine that broke the same way and they sent me to the American Company that doesn't work on Minelab machines anymore.
Get the carbon mono shaft from CMD, that fits the vanquish range.
which carbon shaft do you recommend to convert this metal detector?
That's so thin in that area there's no way it's user error and the bubbles is a big problem with cheap plastic
Bubbles are a big problem in any structural load bearing material.😔
Yeah totally agree! But who in their right mind would design a load bearing rod to be joined to a handle in this way via a plastic control box.. woulnt take much for a minor drop down some steps or lateral pressure to stress this joint.. and if air pockets are in the plastic like the photos... bro - crack waiting to happen

Coat the entire area with chicken wire and about a half pound of hot glue. Not even sure if that will help reinforce it from the looks of it.
Fiberglass the entire box!
@@VegasDtech You might could somehow attach very strong metal supports from the shaft below the box, along the box, and to the shaft of the handle so metal is holding it together. I could probably rig the broken one back together but it would look like hell.

I’ve owned the vanquish 540 for a year now and I’ve have put mad hours on it. I haven’t been to delicate with it and have yet to have any issues. That being said, I’m still looking into the straight shaft conversion, just in case. The Vanquish 540 has been an amazing machine.
I've done the straight shaft conversion; it gets rid of this problem.

Works only if you're not too tall. For me , it barely made it; 5'7" ; probably don't work for 6 ft..LOL
I seen a aftermarket shaft that relocated the control box up high.. Thats way better . IDK what the guys in UK did for that break short of running over it LOL
I think it's sad to see a big company like minelab making low grade detectors in the physical sense. The cost to manufacture a equinox is probably about 50 dollars.
If that.. but realistically have they really took the time to test the durability of their devices anymore? is it just BONUSES for bosses and cut cut cut to the lowest bidder to make the machine?

The design is great, but why am I making such a large box entirely out of plastic and sinking into it because the lower section is heavy ❓ you could have done it like Deus or Mars didn't have anything like that, sadly that doesn't testify to quality for because price of a beginner device!
The over all design is a good setup but terrible connection and plastic quality. It is a budget machine though. Just one of the reasons to give the Simplex big credit. Can't get a better build than that for the price!
I don't believe the guy that clams this isn't from abuse. I've seen plenty of people drop their machines from waist level before going down to ground level to check their plug ect. No way even with the "bubbles" this would just break from normal use. I just can't listen to that. Either way....Minelab quality is still sub par and I'm sure it will improve soon.
I agree with you.. That damage looks crazy man! like he stepped on it by mistake? and realised that it cant be glued back due to it being in a load bering joint...
WOW 😲😲, most likely a design problem, less likely a plastic fracture due air bubbles, as main issues related to cracking are related to high temperature molding.
95% design problem id say.. a plastic joint built into the control box, where 100% load will be applied when lifting and swinging??
Mine lab has great service and I think that's mainly from abuse on that part of that dropping it hard or you know stepping on it or something I don't think you could break something like the way that one looks like it's been abused
Thats what i eluded to when saying Minelab will probably file this under user neglect and abuse.. The design isnt a smart one having it built into the control box though in my opinion.... IF by chance it would happen it would 100% need to go back to Minelab for a NEW control box..
In all honesty, while I feel the Vanquish is a good performance detector, it is not solidly built. Probably the worst built detector I've ever own. When I swing uphill, I can feel a strain in that area which concerns me..That is when it can break....Hopefully it will never happen.
I hope not Jason.. It probably wont but it just sucks to know that the potential for a break could happen right at that spot
I wonder if you can reinforce it with some sort of epoxy? Maybe model kit builders have a solution?
Mines a piece of shit I’ve got the sensitivity turned all the way down in jewelry mode and it’s jumping all over the place almost unusable

Hey brother thank you for your interest in my material.. metal detecting isnt as EXCITING as NFL SPORTS or UFC.. Muscle car builds so it takes time and effort trying to put material together that is stuff that you'll want to watch..
