The message - I guess the moral of the story -of Animals is one that I really take to heart. In track 1 Roger writes about never having met his partner. Throughout tracks 2-4 he describes the ways we are all dragged down by the stone, it's always present and inescapable. In the final track he emphasizes that the only thing we have to lessen the burden of the stone is each other and the ones we love. It's the most clear, personal and powerful message that Pink Floyd has ever put into their music.
As somebody already mentioned the full-length version of "Pigs On The Wing" the lead work was played by Snowy White. The reason why this happened was that Gilmour's original lead break got erased in the studio and as White turned up at the studio to discuss going on tour with the band to play with them and Gilmour was not around they had him play the lead break. It was only ever released on the 8-Track Cartridge. Also, it was Gilmour who played the bass on "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" and not Waters. The most likely reason why no Immersion box set was made for Animals is down to the lack of material they had at the time. They had already used the live versions of "Raving & Drooling" and "You've Got To Be Crazy" on the WYWH Immersion box and the Animals Tour or In The Flesh Tour as it was later called never churned out enough good quality recordings for them to be able to use. To be honest, in many ways I am glad they never put out an Immersion boxset and the good thing about the new release is that they put out a standalone blu ray so I did not have to fork out a fortune to get my hands on the 5.1 mix lol. The new mix is very good and I must admit that even I had to get accustomed to it and missed the murky mud that was on the original mix at first. But once you play the new mix a good few times I think most people will prefer it because all of the instrumentation and dynamics are more defined and stand out more true to life. In many ways I wish Steve Wilson had done the mix but in all honesty, Guthrie has done a really good cleaning job here for sure and does deserve credit for it.
Bit late commenting as only just seen this vid via the algorithm but the main reason Animals hasn't been released as a larger boxset is simply because there isn't anything to put in it! There are no demo's as the bulk of the album had been played live for several years. There were no singles as such so no b-sides. The only thing missing is the spliced Pigs On The Wing which actually features Snowy White (not Gilmour oddly) on lead guitar. Oh, the stellar bass work on Pigs you love isn't Waters, that this time is Gilmour on bass! Great vid though, sorry I was so late finding you!
I'm really sad that my friends were not able to get into animals due to its lenght. I kinda understand, but it makes me sad that some people have such short attention spans.
Superb analysis of the themes, especially given your own experiences of punching your way up the corporate ladder :) and good point re Taylor Swift's 'The Man'. I've only heard snippets of the remix - no comment.
Animals is an album that i like every song and that i have no complains too. But still even tho is kinda perfect in my head i just don't like it as much as many other albums that i have many songs that i don't like and complains.
I kind of like just buying the remix. I have the original mix. I have a cd. I never really look at the extras. Space is at a premium for me. It's nice not to get gouged once in a while.
Bought the Blu-Ray version of this for the 5.1 mix and I must say I am disappointed. Very little use of the surround channels and even the bass is weak. Makes me wish that Steven Wilson had been at the controls to the surround mix. The stereo remix sounds much better.
I prefer the original. I streamed the remix and find it overly detailed and no longer as musical. What I do find amazing is that they were able to extract that much detail from the original tapes, with 2018 technology at that.
The guitar solo on the 8-track complete version of Pigs on the Wing pt 1 & 2 is actually played by Snowy White
Yeah I had the 8-track version:

1:11 I remember Rick Wright calling Atom Heart Mother a failed experiment. Animals is maybe the most "angry" PF album.
