Fantastic video! If you don’t mind I’d like to give one small tip. I recommend wrapping the brush in the same direction as the thread wrapping (over the hook) this will make the brush truly tighten around the shank instead of the thread slightly loosening the wraps. Great video tho and I’ll be tying some up for smallmouth soon!
Yes, that's a great way to do it, and actually how I do it now. I never had any issues personally the way that I was doing it before, but I think it could cause issues for some people. Thanks for the feedback and good luck with the smallies!
Thank you for the close up camera work and alternative angles very very helpful. As others have said the pop up comments and voice over really beneficial.
Great tie and one of the best I’ve seen on TH-cam as far as clarity of video, description of technique and materials used. Great resource you’ve made here for new tiers and many useful tips and tricks. As far as the finished product goes, the trimming being done all at once at the end of the tying process seems to work better for me as well as I feel I have more control over the finished shape of the fly. Again, great tie!
@@mcfallflies glad to be a part of what makes it worth while. I spend a lot of time unfortunately watching TH-cam just due to my disabilities that were received in Combat while serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and the remainder of time that isn’t spent watching is spent tying. I do on the upside spend way more time than most tying myself and so I have shortened the learning curve as I tie almost daily, and have for more than five years. However, filming and tying is an entirely different beast, but honestly, just know a good demonstration when I see one. Keep up the good work, I live for videos like these
Love seeing your slow water game changers on insta. Now that I've started tying my own changers this was so helpful. Especially all of the trimming advice and the really well captured footage!
I really appreciate the feedback and I'm glad to know that you've found some value from the content. I hope to make a few more videos this year if things quiet down in life a bit.
Great video man! Very well edited and extremely informative. If you ever get the chance make an instructional video on how you make your dubbing brushes. They look quite sick!
I really appreciate the feedback, especially about the editing. It took forever but I’m glad it seems to be helpful! I’ve gotten a couple requests so it may happen down the road
That was just purely preference for me. I've since switched back to wrapping the same way as my thread wraps. Doesn't really matter as long as you can adhere it well. I have a video on my channel about making the shanks if you'd like to see it!
@@mcfallflies do you have a video of how you made that exact one? Are you using ep fibers you’d buy at a fly shop or making your own out of Bonnie cord/craft store fibers?
Thanks for the inquiry. I don't have a video tying that. You can find a tying video at Beast Brushes Website, by the person who originally tied it, Chris Adams. Best of luck!
Are you using craft fur on your dubbing brush? I cant seem to make a nice brush that gets me a full body. Maybe I am not using enough fur. you should do a video on making that brush, looks amazing.
@@mcfallflies Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. As a result of your videos I've now purchased the Oasis dubbing brush table, a couple of looper tools and and trying to figure out where you get your spools of wire and the gauge to get.
Lots of fame changer videos out there but your focus on especially trimming was appreciated. I'm curious about the composition of your dubbing brush. Congo hair and flash?
Hey there! It’s been a while since I made that video, so I’m not sure exactly. I do know that now I’m usually tying a 3-4” fly with about 15” of brush. That depends on the density of the brush of course, but that’s a good rule of thumb for me. About 1” of fly to 4” of brush.
@@mcfallflies Good information thank you, I was interested in the diameter or length of material. I made a small brush table and just was wondering how long you cut your materials.
@@barnman73 ahh! For a 4” fly I don’t usually want my total brush width/diameter to be any more than 2”. You can play around with it and find what works best for you. Essentially double the distance between your hook shank and hook point/gap.
Nice and flamboyant, but I have never seen anyone actually use a massive honker fly like this and catch a fish. What are you suppose to catch with this? Have you actually caught a fish with this? What fish?
Do a little research and you’ll find that they do indeed catch a wide variety of fish. Trout, bass, drum, pike, musky, etc. And yes I’ve caught plenty of fish on these flies.
Sorry I’m just now seeing some of these comments! I use anadromous fly company scissors for all my tying. I love the tungsten carbide hair scissors and razor scissors.

Great tying, I wonder if this streamer becames too heavy when casting it. Morphologically is stunning.
Good question! But no, it’s relatively light. It sheds immediately with the first false cast.
Thanks Ryan!! Great, well done instructional video!!!!

1.5mm or 2.25mm. Maybe have had some of each. I don’t quite remember!
