  • I put the Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 vs the Canon 24-70 2.8 II head on. This is a popular request as Tamron's newest 24-70 is in high demand. A key point on paper is the price difference; the Canon runs around $1,750 USD and the Tamron G2 $1,200 USD. But is the extra $500 worth it? Tamron does have one huge offering over the Canon beat, the VC, Vibration Control noted to 5 stops. It also is built a bit heavier as well. The two major things noticed is the Tamron at around 70mm hunts at times and has heavier vignetting wide open at f2.8.

    I have the Tamron G2 for almost a year now , shoot events/weddings and rock low light shows . It is a great lens BUT - after several months it started squeaking when focusing (google "tamron squeaking" , there is a video somewhere) and 1 month later started "slipping" when trying to focus and not focusing at all - I had to switch to manual focus, click and then turn on auto focus again - apparently it was the focus mechanism failure. I replaced it and it worked fine for a few months until it occured again. Even if my specific copy has some malfunction, it is still something I can't trust for a wedding (if I buy a second G2 now). And on top of that, the hunting is very noticeable with low light (backlight on a group of people in a dark club for example). Bottom line - I think I am going for Canon this time.

    How do the focus breathing, sharpness, and bokeh quality compare between the two? I need a 24-70 f2.8 zoom for my c200. I've tried the 24-70 f2.8L II from canon but hated it for not having IS. However, when choosing between image quality and getting stabilized shots, I'd rather go with better image quality and find someway to stabilize the shots like using a monopod, or shoulder rig. But still, not having IS will definitely limit the usage of the lens in general. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

    Thanks Eric looking at a new purchase of a 24-70 - we shoot video and stills and VC/IS is actually really important to us in a run and gun zoom lens like this - but what I'm really struggling with is the Tamron vs the Canon 24-70 F4 IS. It seems like thats more of a comparison to me head to head. Have any thoughts on those two?

    • @Eric_Rossi

    I thought the colour rendering on the Canon was better in that video sample you showed us. Tamron was just like all over warm, whereas the Canon had a bit more dynamics plus subtle classy warmth .. the colour rendered was totally different from the face to the wall .. however the Tamron seems to paint more from the same palette and missed the variations. Ultimately, apart from all those features, one needs to look at picture rendering too .. colour rendering is more important than sharpness etc. Nice video. Kudos.

    I looked at the Sigma, Tamron and Canon. I discounted the Sigma straight away due to the edge sharpness, which is seriously poor. That's a shame as I adore my other Sigma Art lenses. Because the Tamron is so new, I haven't yet found many direct comparisons (particularly with the Canon) so I had to make a slightly blind decision. In the end, I did go for the Tamron, primarily because it clearly has great image quality, it's cheaper and has stabilisation. In fact, it hasn't been delivered yet but I have my fingers crossed that it meets my expectations!

    Auto Focus accuracy and speed also depends on the camera on the back. With the Canon IDX series Bodies, we basically get perfect focus on either lens, I have both lenses and noticed on the 5D4 the Tamron is not as good as it is on my1DX, however they are very close. Splitting hairs.

    Hi, I have the Canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6 which is a good piece already ... but consider the Tamron G2 for a more professionnal lense. Even if the Tamron is a f2.8, and it has a good press, I'm afraid I won't get the expected step up. What do you think ?

      @Eric_Rossi  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 II L lens and I have noticed some blur in low light situations from my shaky hands. I am seriously thinking of selling my Canon lens and purchasing this Tamron because of its vibration control. However, I'm still reluctant to do so because I know the 'Canon' is a good lens. Anyway, I am finding it a hard decision. I've considered having both lenses but that is not really economically justifiable for me. I'd be financing the purchase of the Tamron with the Canon lens if I chose to make the change. Would it be a too big a compromise to to trade up to the Tamron lens? Would it be a wise choice?

    Interesting. I'm wanting to move to Canon as I'm sick shit of Nikon customer service. I was going to buy the Tamron but after watching this I'm having second thoughts. Is the Tamron really that bad at 70mm?

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldnt say its really bad, just something to note with this version that I had.

  • @stealthspoon1

    Since you said 90% of the time, the Tamron would not hunt for focus, would you still trust using it at a wedding?

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, but if still given the choice, I'd take the Canon or Nikon version

    When I look at 3rd party lens I put it like this if I’m paying less for said 3rd party I always expect it to be less efficient than say nikon or canon just because I’m paying less,the argument then falls into this,is the money I’m saving meaning I’m getting an inferior lens when comparing like for like and in this video shows in your opinion the Tamron is not as good focusing at 70mm but then better in video....so on your video buy the canon for end sharpness,build,and it’ll cost you more,buy the Tamron for VC and better video focus,and save cash

    • @Eric_Rossi

      100%, very well said man. But sadly people feel you can get all in one and always save money. Photography is just expensive lol

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel it it, much faster. But thats only if you feel the first version is holding you back in any way

      @451greenwood 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I own the G1 but also used G2, G2 is noticeably quicker and feels better in the hand,a little sharper if you pixel peep.....is it worth the upgrade G1-G2? In my opinion NO the difference is so little I’d wait for the G3 when it comes

    Hello. I had a question for you. Some people are complaining about the focusing of the tamron g2 . Specifically some are complaining that the middle focus point does not focus in the middle. The focus gets shifted a little bit.
    Are you aware of any such problem? Or did you face any while using your tamron g2 lens ?
    Waiting eagerly for your reply. Because your response will help me to decide whether I should go for this lens or not.

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never heard of that specifically, the only thing I noticed was hunting a bit only at 70mm but thats about it. Someone could have had their calibration off or something.

    I had the Tamron and it sucked! Then I bought the Canon and it is amazing! The Tamron VC is no advantage, if the photos are blurred beacuse of poor optics!

    • @Eric_Rossi

    I bought the Tamron 24-70 G2 for canon, and to be honest it sucks, when at 70mm at 2.8 it was very soft, lost a lot of sharpness, and through all the range never managed to nail focus, I micro adjusted my camera for the lens and same results, very soft images, I wouldn't recommend it, GO CANON! or sigma

      Hahaha well the moment you said go for Sigma, you just showed that you can not tell the difference between good lens and bad lens. How can I take a recommendation from someone like you.
      The Sigma is worst than any 24-70 in the market, and it is no way near absolutely no way near the Tamron 24-70. You don’t believe me then go ahead and do some homework.

    • @GuntherVM
      @GuntherVM 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bought a G2, tested it and the focus was always a few centimetres out
      Traded it for another one and said either they give me one that's perfect with my camera or I want my money back
      They tested a different one with my camera and traded, now it's perfect
