Thanks a lot for trying to help. Still unable to connect for me. Did not get as far as being able to enter in password on phone

Ok when I did this password change, I then disabled AirPlay, waited a minute, enabled AirPlay, now it worked! Toggling enable disable AirPlay was the second part of the trick that made it work!
