Mostly Madagascar vanilla is sold in the markets here in North America and not many people know that South India also produces its own variety of vanilla beans.

Yes.. im not very sure abt entire south inda. But here in karnataka we used to grow vanilla massively approx 10 years back may be for a decade or 5-6 years as there was so much demand on it. But later on it decreased may be due to price drop(not so sure though) or due to high maintainance as one need to finish the pollination during flowering season before 8 or 9 am in the morning and the quality of the pollination technique decides the thickness of the beans. And it's very allergic to some ppl. As a teenager by then I have very sweet memories of entire family running for pollination early morning and during the beans harvest entire house used to be filled with aroma..
