I don't know, anyway they are available at Amazon for $114 for the terracotta ones! Something that you could address that I saw on the comments about the Tower is about the worms supposedly "getting out" in between where the tray stack. Hellooooo wormie friend!!! 🪱🪱🪱 ok so looks like frozen aloe is a winner! Interesting that it wasn’t their first choice tho, the other foods were a priority! I loved the aeroplane toddler feeding noise 😂😂😂 so could you use egg cartons as bedding? Would you need to shred it up if so? This experiment will be good, I’ve got so many egg cartons and people keep giving me more, so If I could use them as bedding that would be awesome 🙌🏼 I think that egg cartons gonna be inundated with party worms next time hahahaha 👏🎉 awesome video as always 😃🪱👏 take care my friend and have the best week! 🌻🌷💝

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hellloooo Anita!! You are right, I think if all I gave them was aloe they would go for it right away...but they were sidelined by my little control group of food scraps! I'm hoping for 1 of 2 scenarios with the egg carton...either I get 12 little perfect worm balls in each egg spot or they devour the egg carton straight away so I can do away with ripping them up...something tells me I may be a little disappointed🤣😂 I think it will be a party in there and maybe even help me sift some good castings with fewer worms since they will be congregated in the center! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and leave another wonderful cheerful comment!! Have a great week ahead!!🪱🪱🪱

    So its safe to give them some aloe vera? A stem of my plant broke off I put it in the fridge for now so I can see if its safe. my indoor colony is 20 years old I have no idea how many are in there I started with a 1/2lbs. Do you use used coffee? I have a can of coffee that needs to be tossed so wondering if I can put some in the bin and if I can do I soak the coffee or can I just put some in?

      @Vermicompost  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is safe to give them some aloe leaves, but it does take a while so I'm guessing they don't "love" it! Worms will absolutely eat your spent coffee grounds, in fact I feed them a little almost every time I feed them! You don't need to soak them or anything. If you have some old unused coffee grounds you can feed them that as well. That is a hearty 20 year old colony you've got there!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Thanks for the reply. When I started my bin feeding them was easy but after my wife passed away I had to start buying stuff for them. In the summer it's easy to get them something to eat the winter I buy bananas for them. They also seem to have a way of surviving long periods without my feeding them. Depression after the wife passed. I know I forgot to feed them many times in the years afterwards. It's almost like they go dormant or maybe it's just that many die and they live off them and when they get food again they bounce back fast. There's lots I don't know. I tried having a colony of nightcrawlers they did well until they didn't. I still wonder about it because it was like they just vanished but they couldn't have gotten out of the fridge. The red wigglers in comparison are a breeze to raise. I might try again.

      @@VermicompostThanks it was hard I went on what I call autopilot for around 7 years when I came back to myself I was 375lbs and I own just over 500 videogames. I hit 223 the other day. Through diet alone since I'm incapable of most exercise the best I can do is work out my arms and chest but I couldn't do a pushup at my weight I think when I get under 220 I should be able to start but i Use bands to workout my arms for now if I can steghnthen them maybe I can start pushups then all it will take is 3 to 6 months to firm up and feel more alive. Being 50 doesn't help matters but I figure I can do it. So i lost all the weight through diet alone. I have flashbacks now and then memories in that 7 years I guess when I trip a trigger I can remember. I know for a fact that I didn't feed them for an extended period of time weeks to maybe even months. I recall thinking oh shit I bet my worms are dead. I haven't fed them in a while and they are still there still alive. I have no idea how they can be still thriving. I try to pile up everything on one side of the bin and place new bedding and food on the other to try and remove the castings without killing to many off. They have been in the same bin for 20 years in the same spot even. I cut a hole in the top for air then I put a sticky thing not the fly strip but I puit it in the hole so any flies that try or even make it in never make it out cause they get caught. I somehow also have pill bugs in there with them. I wonder if they feed of there dead maybe that's how they survive long periods with me feeding them. I'm in mid northern Ontario Canada.

      Glad you've made it back! That is an incredible weight loss!! I turn 50 this year myself and I've learned I have to take it easy (or easier) after this torn labrum in my shoulder demonstrated!! The pill bugs help to shred up the food and they certainly feed the worms after they die. Piling up the food on one side is a great technique so the worms have the ability to get away from any foul gasses or fermentation that can occur. You & your worms have an incredible story!!

    I think that feeding will take a lot longer for the worms to get into, mainly because you created a nearly sterile environment for the food. I think if you put that older food and/or some castings in the bottom and on the food, then the bacteria and other bin helpers can start working on the food. That would have been a great way to do a pre-vacation feeding, especially if there was already some slow foods in the bin. I find that that egg cartons tend to get warmer than cardboard when covered with food. Perhaps due to the energy the helpers produce or the glue and wood pulp combo, so I use more egg cartons in the winter when I like to create more heat.

      @@Vermicompost Yeah it seemed like a very comparable number of worms between the two. And soldier fly larva and mites... it didn't seem like the biology is what made the difference. I always hear people say that when you freeze leftovers then feed them to the worms the food is faster than without freezing since during the freezing process the water in each cell expands and crystalizes, bursting open each plant cell. In a leaf of aloe with that much water content, I think this bursting of the cell walls led to a very quick draining effect. If ya wanted to be more sure you could always freeze an aloe leaf than just thaw it out on the counter in a plate or bowl and check to see if it shrivels as fast and if there is a pool of liquid next to it in the container.
