A note: I would advise against using braid on an overhead reel when surfcasting. I have had good quality 55lb braid snap mid-cast. It has no stretch, so if it catches in the other turns on the reel, snap off time. Modern Fixed spools are fine, the line lay is such that the braid can't dig in. Feel free to experiment and prove me wrong. May be ok on a reel with level wind, but reels with levelwind are not usually any good for distance work. Cheers from the UK (such as it is). I fished mostly around the Titahi Bay area (Wellington). PS, My UK techniques were not overly successful except for catching gurnards.
Yeah braid on overheads for distance and fast/heavy casting can have accidents, can depend on a number of factors such as braid thickness (less likely to dig and tangle) and construction (tightly woven more likely to dig in). Also how smoothly you cast and how much line is on the reel - a full reel is more likely to tangle than one just under full. A stronger/more cautious thumb rather than a loose thumb on the reel will also make a difference.....
Nice review, had trouble recently with braid in a rocky bay, cut the line twice, probably weakened from abrasion. Thought braid was superior in all aspects, but I didn't know that downside
Yeah no problem at all, Ive caught stacks of kahawai on mono. The good thing about mono is that it has some stretch so when the fish jumps and tries to throw the lure the line will help cushion the shock a bit and reduce the risk of the hook pulling or line snapping.
Hi Benjamin, thanks for the heads up, I just tried it and it looks like it must have been a temporary glitch with TH-cam when you tried because it played ok for me...
Good information to know. I use mono on the rocks and braid in the sand but now I’ll try braid with mono leaders on the rock jetty! 👍🏽
Thanks, good luck...
Great article With my bread when live bating I will run about 12ft of mono and I like to Vaseline the Brad to keep it floating .

Yeah it's a bit more visible than mono and doesn't last on the sharp rocks so its not for every situation but has some advantages.
Just wandering, can you use mono for kahawai lures?

I am used 100 lb braid 45 kg ,rest mono hooks 0,45 15 kg
Nice, good to know👍
Good videos bro! Just curious have you hooked up on that landbased marlin set in NZ??!
No, have seen a few and my mate beside me had a take but didn't hook up....stripie, about 120kg.
